Riding the Iron Horse Rambles with RBMN

#2102 is back!
After a 7-month absence from the rails, Reading & Northern's premiere steam locomotive 2102 lead the first of three 2023 Iron Horse Rambles from Reading to Jim Thorpe and back.
2102 is a Reading T-1 class 4-8-4 "Northern." She was originally built in 1945 as an extensive rebuild of a 1921 2-8-0 "Consolidation." She originally hauled coal for the Reading Railroad and later lead the original Iron Horse Rambles up to 1991. Reading & Northern spent over $2.4 million and 6 years of hard work to get her back on the rails in 2022.
I rode this as a passenger in one of the standard coaches. Although it was my third ride behind 2102, it was my first Iron Horse Ramble. I was joined by my sister, Vivian, and my friend Nick from ‪@NixCrossing‬.
Although 2102 put out a lot of smoke of her own, it paled by comparison to the atmospheric smoke you see shrouding the mountains and settling into the valleys. This was more of the Canadian wild fire smoke that has been making repeat visits to the northeastern United States this summer.
Part 2 of this 3-part series covers the station and rail yard action in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. First 2102 pulled the consist back to the Glen Onoko wye to be turned around. Then diesel 2014 took the cars for storage while 2102 was serviced in the yard. Upon returning to near the station, passengers and railfans could tour the cab. You know I couldn't resist another visit there! Finally, 2014 and 2102 worked together to put the consist together in The Narrows before 2102 performed a run-to to the station before boarding.

You're getting significantly better with your videos & filming. Loved see the behind the scenes work being done when passengers unboard and you look like an engineer already. Good seeing Andy again as well.

Thanks so much, JP! I was able to use my new phone's camera for the first time which has a lot of great new-to-me features. Still a lot to learn with it, but it seems to be paying off already. And I've been able to use a lot of photo tips you've given me along the way. Glad you enjoyed the behind the scenes, and I really enjoyed that moment with Andy, even if I misheard him while I was out there in the yard lol! Hope you get to ride and/or chase 2102 sometime soon.

Awesome part 2 Jamie!! That was sure unique with Andy blowing both whistles; I caught that once I’m pretty sure by accident on the first ramble last year. Wasn’t sure if it “worked” to do both at the same time but that’s cool it does! And nice preview of your future steam career!

On July 1 we took our first ride in the dome cars for the Scenic Gorge Train. We rode in the dome of the orange and brown car to the end, then road back in the lower section of the maroon car. It was a great experience both ways. We ride the Jan. 13 Ramble in the Pullman car.

Hey Jamie. The first video I watched on you tube today was a review of broadway limited's n scale version of three Reading T1. The next video was the Iron horse ramble with the re a l thing.

Cool that you watched that combination of videos! I got the BLI N scale #1 American Freedom Train version of the T-1. They have "Reading" and "Blue Mountain and Reading," but I'm holding out hope that the next batch with have "Reading & Northern."

Broadway Limited Imports now has a model of the 2100 series Reading/Reading and Northern T-1, but didnt indicate the scale, which i presume is HO. Would be nice to have one, but theyre probably out of my budget, and will also sell out quickly.

O gauge T1s from MTH are over $1000 used. I'm sure the Broadway Limited models are HO, probably $500 or more.

The Broadway Limited T-1's are N scale (though I think they have HO as well). For now 2102 is just available as Reading or Blue Mountain and Reading. I'm holding off for them to make a Reading and Northern one (and hopefully before then I'll win the lottery).

I know they'd like to do that run, but there's logistics to be worked out. Now that the full 2023 schedule is out, we're going to have to wait until 2024 to see if they do it.

@@JamieMakin The Strasburg Railroad was offering it with 611 for $611. A couple years ago the Ft.Wayne RR Historical Society was offering it with 765 for $1000! The Essex Valley RR in CT offers an instructional course and an hour behind the throttle for $650, last time I checked.
