@CSS803 No. we were in the passenger part of the car looking thru the vistibule window and thru the front window. The conductor wouldnt let us up front because he didnt want to loose his job.

I remember taking the South Shore line as way back in the early 70's from South Bend Indiana that when the South Shore line had the old station and ran the old cars then and when I experienced the new South Shore line cars back in the 90's round trip then afterwards I let my Son get his interuban rail trip thats round trip from Chicago to South Bend Indiana and Back to Chicago,lllinois in the Summer of June 2007 when my Son was 5 yrs old

At the 6:12 mark you will notice the former entrance to Midwest Steel on the right as the train approaches the overpass built around 2003 to provide an alternative entrance to the mill . After a few collisions between trains and big rigs hauling coils they decided to eliminate the crossing.

I've always wanted to ride this line! Great video!

Why don't you ride it? Did you move from the area or are you still living here? I've been on it a couple of times and they were fun.

In the sixties and seventies passengers were asked not to flush toilets over roads........and we all know why. Some teens were known to drop M-80s while in the bathroom. One conductor mistakenly thought someone was "following the train" after a couple of bangs.

@ricardlupus Yes your 100% correct on that. Express trains and freight trains stay to the left so they aren't so close to the platform

Metra and NICTD are working consecutively to rebuild Kensington Interlocking, to add a second main trackfrom the South Shore to join Metra north of 115th Street.

I'm planning on taking The South Shore Line sometime soon. I have taken it to South Bend and I did film it but my smartphone didn't save the video of it. I was furious with it. Now that I have a new smartphone I'm going to take The South Shore Line sometime soon so I can make a video of my trip on it.

Why doesnt the South Shore just add 2 tracks all the way through?

Never rode SSL but the street running part must be painful to seat through, so slow. How long does it take to go through that part?

Some idiotic kids were jumping off the bridge into the Calumet (I think) river and they failed to get out of the way of a train one day. They were hit, and now all trains must blow for every bridge

Now that the railroad is all ctc the road repeater is very quiet 83 out 161.355 MHz 161.010 AAR 60 in to the repeter. The only other road respecters are tht I know of are on the California western 160.650 MHz AAR 36 out and on the white pass nd Yukon railway

Nice video! What's the odd-looking switch just before the platform that the train passes through around 10:40? Is it there so trains that aren't stopping pass farther from the platform or what?

They don't really run enough trains to need 2 tracks

There is a section, I believe in Gary or Miller, where they tried that years ago. The first coal train that CSS ran cracked the concrete, so NICTD has to stick with good ole' wood ties.

SouthShoreTrain: If the concrete ties "cracked" under the first freight load then THERE WAS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG. The PRIVATE mainline RRs MOVING FREIGHT are converting to concrete ties as they do their standard maintenance cause concrete is stronger and MUCH longer lasting. Go google "powder basin coal trains" and you'll see that BNSF and UP have used nothing but concrete ties on their lines they've built for hauling long HEAVY coal trains out of the coal pits.

lukebccb Like I said, they did this years ago. I think in the 80's or 90's, probably before the concrete tie technique was perfected.

SouthShoreTrain: Well then, I'd say there's a MAJOR problem with the NICTD because THIS video is from (apparently) 2011 *and NOT "the 80s or 90s"* so the "concrete tie technique" IN 2011 IS PERFECTED. BTW "SouthShoreTrain": quit while you're ahead.
