If I remember correctly, JR East was preparing to replace the older 651 Series train sets with the E653 train sets on the full length _Hitachi_ run between Tokyo and Sendai at the time of the March 2011 earthquake. The E653 sets were reassigned to the Niigata-Akita _Inaho_ services instead, and JR East start to run the _Hitachi_ service from Tokyo to Iwaki only in March 2013, extending all the way to Sendai when the full Jōban Line was reopened in 2020.

(From Wikipedia) As the very first planning, Hitachi form Tokyo area to Iwaki will be replaced to Series E657, and Iwaki to Sendai will use Series E653 to operates. However, due to the earthquake, Series E653 ware reassigned to Niigata area.

Yes, I remember that terrible earthquake and tsunami. I was so upset as I love the Japanese people and country. I remember finding out that I could donate my credit card points to the relief effort. I donated it all. I watched how strong, resilient and compassionate your people are. This was a beautiful train and journey. Great scenery and the snack cart lady was awesome. The bento and mochi looked good too. I would have eaten all 4 mochi too.

ちょうど昨日、仙台18:02発、常磐線特急上りに乗車しました☺️ 牛タン弁当は弁当売場より、すぐ近くの牛タン専門店が並ぶ店でお弁当を買った方が、牛タンが厚みがあってジューシーでお手頃でおすすめです。 品川迄の4時間半の道中は、お弁当の他に、NDで販売されている皮剥きの冷凍みかん🍊や、阿部の笹かまぼこを購入して電車の旅を楽しむのにいいですね☺️ また乗車したくなりました！

It looks as though JR Tohoku has done a good job with the repairs to the track and stations in Fukushima. It was a nice run with great scenery, Shinagawa station has many memories for me, it was nice to see it again despite the crowds.

Does Jr pass fully cover the expenses between tokyo to sendai? Is there any charges in bullet trains even after having JR pass?

Don’t forget about the virtues of the Japanese People. They searched each house for valuables and left them at the curb for rightful retrevement by their owners. These are good people my friends!🇺🇸

I was very excited when the Joban Line rebuilt at 2020, although those area are still not suitable for living. I really want to try taking Hitachi form Sendai to Tokyo, but I have no time. (cry

出張する時によく特急ひたちを利用している。前はバスで仙台から出発するが、常磐線の方が確かに便利です。

仙台〜品川で過酷とかいってたら、大阪〜青森の「白鳥」なんて乗ってられないだろうね(笑)

Shinkansen is a very convenient transportation but sometimes, using local express train is nice. The food there are all awesome. I can guarantee it's worth a visit☺️

上信越線・東北本線・常磐線の特急は、やはり上野の頭端式ホームが似合うんだけどなぁ。。

本日日立乗りました 12時53分日立13号でいわきに行き16時18分の日立22号で東京に帰って来ました 上野から水戸まで約1時間止まらないものの水戸以降いわきまで止まりまくる日立号…普通席とグリーン車の違いの無さ … ある意味過酷な特急かも（笑） 今回乗ったのはグリーン車です ちなみに乗った理由… いわき名物じゃんからが欲しかったから その為に往復19900円払うおバカさんでした。 追記! 東京に来るにも新幹線代往復40000円弱払う大阪人でした（笑）

伏原寛基さん、コメントありがとうございます😊 確かに普通車とグリーン車は見た感じほぼ一緒ですよね😅 一応日本一停車駅の多い特急列車らしいですよ。自分も大阪人なんで縁のない常磐特急ですが、珍しく在来線で車内販売もあったりと楽しめましたね。 合計６万！それでも欲しいものが手に入れられたのと、移動も合わせて楽しめたのではないでしょうか😆

大阪の方でしたか 東京に行く時は、いろいろ乗りますよ 西武、京急、京成、京王、小田急、東武… その中でも小田急のロマンスカーののんびり走るあの雰囲気好きです（笑） JRは、何か行くたんびに圧倒されます（笑）

バスと競合してるのにまだ1日に上下3本ずつ(仙台〜品川)運行してるのが凄いですよね。 バスだと5時間半くらいで王子駅に着いて価格は3000円だからわたしはバスしか使った事ないですけど(^^)
