RIDING A FYRA V250 IN 2020! Trenitalia Frecciargento ETR.700 Business Class Review (Milan to Ancona)

Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on the channel. For this week's video, I am trying out the infamous Fyra V250, now in service with Trenitalia as the Frecciargento 700 (classified as ETR.700).
This journey begins at Milano Centrale, a truly grand construction, and in my opinion a tourist attraction in its own right. I am travelling on one of the Fyra V250 sets, which first operated for a few months in Belgium and The Netherlands on the SNCB/NS joint 'Fyra' high-speed operation from Amsterdam to Breda and Brussels.
Unfortunately, these trains lasted only 39 days in full service, quickly being withdrawn due to a serious amount of major defects and problems (detailed in this document I found online: media.rtl.nl/media/financien/r.... After a long legal battle, the sets were returned to Italy, and in 2017 were bought by Trenitalia, who had them heavily overhauled and refurbished.
In 2019, the fleet re-entered service at last, on Frecciargento (silver-arrow) services on the Adriatic Railway route running Milano-Bologna-Rimini-Ancona-Bari-Lecce. The first stretch of the route to Palma is high-speed, allowing the trains to stretch their legs up to 155mph (250km/h), and afterwards on classic routes at up to 125mph (200km/h). After Rimini, the route skirts the titular Adriatic Sea, allowing sublime views of the coast and resorts.
It's a spectacular journey, on what in my opinion is a now spectacular train. Check out the video to see what it's like to travel on a Fyra V250 in 2020!

    Having commuted on them back when they were the Fyra. I'm quite impressed on how much they've been improved since when they just came into service.

    ETR 700 was "promoted" to Frecciarossa services (with ETR 600). It's nice in the new livery and they are thinking to put a cover on the front hook.

    when i was 8 years old we got back from our holiday from thailand and we go to the train platforms to wait on our fyra train to breda(on that moment the used traxx locmotives and icr rolling stock) but then i saw an fyra v250 rolling into the station of schiphol i was like holy. i was blown away in exitment to see that fyra v250 in testing. i will never forget that day. when i was going onto my train two emplyees of the train came up to me because they saw me so exited at looking at the fyra v250 and they gave me an metal pin with an metal out line of the fyra v250. i was so happy i still have it today. i will never forget that day the only time ever i saw an fyra v250.

    Beautiful train, despite the awkward design of the front of the engine, it is really a very cool train, all the classes are really neat. I bet it has been somehow refurbished to meet the exigent Italian Design Standards. Thanks for the review.

    Little correction, the front car is not an engine/locomotive car. The train has power distributed on all the cars unlike it happens with the Frecciarossa ETR 500 which instead uses two locomotives to run the convoy

    @@Hans-gb4mv Not sure about the pricing but AmsaldoBreda delivered very bad trains. Failing doors, battery's on fire, etc. Etc. Now NS has buyed Alstom trains way better than the TRAXX and V250 Albatros trains.

    Brilliant video! The look of said trains is most definitely controversial but they certainly are unique in design! The interior is also magnificent and seems a lovely, luxurious and stylish travelling atmosphere for sure. Also congratulations on 7,000 subscribers and I look forward to what you bring next.

    In Denmark the Danish Railways had problems with IC4 train sets from Ansaldobreda. It was a rough start with train sets too long for the stations and the Danish media brought the Dutch/Belgium story about stopping their orders and so did the we - a bit too late. So we have some IC4 but they filled with reliably issues. IC4 are going early retirement and faced out in the coming years and replaced by new Alstom Coradia.

    Hello! Thank you for your detailed, much enjoyable reports! As a trainspotter and enthusiast i find them excellent, please keep them up! I was also blown away by the ETR 700, especially the interiors. Did you know these were supposed to be transferred here, in Greece, to operate on the new mainline between Athens and Thessaloniki? Finally they never did, we have just started receiving refurbished former ETR 470 sets for operation here. Let's see how this will go...

    Glad to see those AnsaldoTilburg trains got a second chance. Never had the chance to travel on those trains when they were in that brief service with NS. Hope to catch one in Italy when we’re back to normal.

    I advise a trip on the narrow gauge railway from Bari to Matera (post-Covid of course). It terminates underground due to the hilly-ness of Matera - is cheap too. Make sure you get on the right portion though as it splits (nearly made that mistake). Matera is amazingly beautiful, plus really good pistachio Geleta. I find Bari and Matera best between the mud-autumn and early spring, as the evening lights really elevate the atmosphere of both - plus less tourists and it's cheaper to stay there. When no COVID

    great video yes the trains look ugly at the front but i am glad the trains managed to get used again and heavily refurbishment too but the best part of the journey for me was the Adriatic coastal views

    Thanks for this interesting review. In Italy railfans were VERY doubtful when Trenitalia bought Fyra. After a few months of service, these trains have solved their second-youth problems and seem to work very well. Also consider that the price for each ETR700 trainset was about 30% of the price for a Frecciarossa ETR400 - which now seem a big deal. It's important to see that also foreign travellers appreciate them. It seems that they will be charged of a large amount of services on the Milan-Venice line in the next months, and finally they will be able to run up to 250 km/h, on the high speed line from Brescia to Milan.     16:33 Spain used to have a train based on the ETR.401 named class 443, It also had a tilting system, It was made in the 70s and in 1987 was abandoned, because Renfe prefered Talgo tilting system due to lower maintenance costs and a less complicated system.

    I worked on these trains in the Netherlands. In that time working on that train was like Russian roulette, but if everything was ok, they were very confertable !

    The ETR700 are in service on a daily basis since two years now! They serve the adriatic line forward and back from Bari to Milan. They are proving on a practical basis this claimed unreliability was not actually a real point. I don't think they are good for long journeys, because they have been designed for a quite high capacity of people and seats are small and very dense. Compared to other ETR italian trains they are quite uncomfortable, for a long trip like Bari-Milan it would be better a different setup, but still the vehicle itself it's effective and has no major issues.

    Isn't it normal that after so many years they got the train sets to an acceptable level of functioning? Let's not forget that when they were ordered they were supposed to start running in 2007, tests didn't start until 2009 and thanks to all the issues, commercial service didn't start till 2012. But 5 years late and the trains had nothing but issues. If you go buy a new car and it is 2 years late and spends more time with the dealer due to issues than on your driveway, would you be happy? Would you find that acceptable?

    @@Hans-gb4mv as far as I know vehicles have been returned in 2014 and have been sitting until 2017, then they have been only re-painted and they had a conversion of the static groups to adapt to the italian railway voltage of 3000Vcc, no other updates have been made. But static groups are just an interchangeable module since they blow out after a given mileage and also every builder usually try to sell the same vehicles to different railways in different countries with different voltages and the replacement it's an ordinary maintainance operation. Two years now on full duty as "Frecciargento" which is considered a mid level (not low) high speed service by Trenitalia, no major issues have been detected, and believe me italian passengers are A LOT picky, otherwise there wouldn't be such a differentiated commercial offer like Frecciabianca, Frecciargento and high level services like Italo and Frecciarossa1000 available. This means that any issue would be reported by passengers themselves, given that Trenitalia could be hiding issues (but usually they are quite shameless about that). Also, the court trial showed that NS and SNCB were not able to prove the existance of any major issue. If we except those trains are nothing special (but specifications have been made by NS) I really can't imagine why so much hate against them.

    @@hansroemerszoonvanderbrikk7626 small note: Belgium also runs its trains on 3kV, so no, they did not need to make any changes for that. The trains were designed to run on 1,5kV= , 3kV= and 25kV~ . And these trains have seen extensive overhauls since Trenitalia took delivery of them. AnsaldoBreda did indeed not make any changes, it was Trenitalia that did those. They did a complete revision of the traction system, redoing all the HV cabling. They also replaced the HVAC units on these trains and of course redid the entire interior to fit in with their own house style. Do you find it normal that when you order trains for delivery in 2007, the first protoype is only ready in 2009 and due to the high amount of issues and brakages you don't even start commercial operation until 2012? First only within the Netherlands because the Belgian authorities do not trust the train enought to certify it for the Belgian railroads. Then when you start operations, less than 1 train in 3 makes it to its destination. A lot of trains got completely cancelled while others gave up along the way and passengers had to be evacuated. Looking at punctuality I think less than 10% of trains arrived on time. And when the public learns about fires, about doors falling of, about trains losing panels do you think you can salvage something like that? These trains had issues running in the snow, with build-up of snow behind panels, forcing those panels loose. And it's not as if it was a particularly hard winter that year. And as far as I remember, the railroad companies settled out of court with the manufacturer. NS got 125 million euro back even though they had already paid considerably more for the delivered sets plus a percentage of whatever the sets would be sold for (got them an additional 20+ million in 2019). The SNCB on the other hand had a better contract with AnsaldoBreda, simply put the train was so late according to the contract that they simply had the right to cancel and in the end they settled over the reputation damage by getting an additional 2,5 million Euro from AB/Finmeccanica.

    @@Hans-gb4mv I think that there's a huge gap between perception and real world. I remember when Alstom (which has a far more better reputation than AnsaldoBreda) set up the AGV for the italian railway, a product that at the time was unveiled as already deliverable had so many failures for many unpredictable reasons that technicians were near to a nervous wreck. Many issues arised during the acceptance, and this is quite common when railways commit a custom build. We experienced a very similar process at the end of the seventies, at the time TIBB (currently Bombardier) was committed to build E632 (and subsequently the whole E652), the very first full bridge rectifier 6 axis locomotive. The very first models required a lot of redesign in the electronic part, but then they become so reliable that we have a lot still on duty, and they've recently been used to rescue brand new TRAXX DC3. Today the bigger model (E652) is still on duty, plenty of rust and near to un-updateable obsolescence. But they're all afraid to retire them completely. Develop a custom vehicle, with a very reduced budget by choice, it's an unpredictable process that could take years and any delay should be taken into account before committing. The fyra was "only" two years late, and it's been quite naive to forecast an on time delivery for a custom build. And it's even more naive to forecast an on time delivery if the commit has a very but very reduced budget.

    @@hansroemerszoonvanderbrikk7626 The V250 had some serious issues, but as has been proven in recent years, none that could not be fixed. On that I have to agree. Although seeing high voltage cables getting terminated incorrectly and seeing their mantles getting damaged by incorrect mounting (if I remember correctly, some of them were even damaged by screws) does make you wonder what kind of people put that train together. Also, no 2 sets were the same. It was as if someone said: these brake lines need to go from A to B and I don't care how you get them there. It simply did not give the railroads confidence in a quick solution. AB adding that the trains were not designed or tested to be running in the snow also caused some issues. It's not as if snow is uncommon here in winter times and other trains keep on running. Although I have to admit, not without issue. The M6 double decker coaches in Belgium had a serious snow issue themselves that is not that widely known. The saving grace for those vehicles was that they could draw power from the adjacent vehicle. It's only when both adjacent vehicles also had an issue and a power transfer was not possible that a vehicle would go dark. It took years to get that issue under control. And it's not like we never had doors falling of trains before. The only DMU in service in Belgium had that happen once when those were brand new. The biggest reason the V250 was returned to Italy, I think, is simply because not only were they extremely late with delivering, in the eyes of the general trainuser, these trains simply spelt trouble. 3 years of troubleshooting and they still had nothing but issues. And when the safety certificate was pulled in Belgium that basically demolished the reputation of that train. By the way, in 2004 it was planned to have the first trainsets delivered in 2007, while you are right that it was delivered in 2009, it wasn't until the end of 2012 that it started running. That's not 2 but 5 years late. The great thing about old trains like the E632/E652 is the simplicity of their electronics. In Belgium we are also still running trains with power electronics from that age and the simplicity means that you can still find replacement parts for the power electronics. And that's what fails the most. The control electronics are solid enough and if something there becomes obsolete and made of unabtanium, you can usually design your way around it if it really becomes an issue. But for the high power stuff, if the original manufacturer doesn't make them anymore, you can usually find someone in China to make the components for you.

    Great video! The design of the train reminds me of American trucks after a facelift, but I like it (I like weird-looking trains). But inside, the train looks nice and modern, also the seat.. but I think footrests should be standard in Business.

    The front end looks like it was designed by the designer's 6 year old daughter. The silver colour scheme though makes it less gharish than the SNCB/NS colours. Inside it looks very nice though. I've been on the Frenciabianca (HST type) train's on the route from Milan to Bari, those had no internet and more basic. Have you tried the 'old' Frencciagento - the tilting train, that one is very comfortable - a bit like our pendolinos - probably same factory (though the FR 1000 is clearly the most luxurious proper high speed trains in Italy)

    These are my thoughts 1.It seems nice the train has a good features 2.The interior Material seems made of metals,Sorry it resemble a kitchen 3.The color scheme looks Nice 4.Assuming is not in pandemic,Will the buffet be full of foods? And it's a good trip.Even late a little.

    So, these trainsets were ordered by and made for The NS and SNCB. When they were finally delivered, The NS and SNCB paid more money and time to test them out. One of the biggest problems was that every trainsets was build differently. That made them strange and unreliable. In the end the NS and SNCB paid a lot of money so Trenitalia could have these trainsets working normaly but as seen in the video not without some small problems still! The problem is that Anslo Breda have sold something that they did not know how to build.

    AnsaldoBreda has done that many times. The IC2 and IC4 for the Danish railways, the new trams for Gothenburg, and the class 800/802 for England are all examples of shoddy construction by AnsaldoBreda (and Hitachi Rail Italy, as they're now known as).

    Pistoia is now owned by Hitachi Rail Europe, and is home of Class 802s. No wonder why their build quality is abysmal like that

    Yes, in 2017 Hitachi Rail SPA signed a contract with Trenitalia for 17 out of 19 V250 trains and five years of maintenance with an option for five more years. The missing two trains are probably used for spares.

    @@Hans-gb4mv No it was not. Trenitalia asked for some added equipment, all the refurbishment was made in Pistoia Hitachi (once Ansaldobreda) plant. Trenitalia asked for a Bistrot area, a fire estinguishing system, a new PIS and a power up of the HVAC system (to deal with over 40° in south Italy). The new look was developed with the help of Giugiaro Architetture. The main problem with the train was that they stayed 6 years abandoned in an open space, so you had to check the status of all electrical connections, but otherwise performed quite well.

    13:18 Castel San Pietro Terme, man you passed near my city, Imola! Great review, I've never used those trains but I always get to see them in Bologna Centrale when I commute to uni. Their design is quite horrible, I prefer by far the other Frecciargento's. About Hitachi's Rock trains, they're pretty good, with large space for bikes, plugs and USB doors. Many seats' layout is 2×2, but they also have 4 seats on each of the train's sides at the beginning (or end, you choose) of each coach. Their seats are a bit too hard for me, but I still like them, they're a big improvement to old Italian commuter trains. Finally Trenitalia is starting to invest on commuters and refurbishing its rolling stock as passengers are growing again

    Actually ansaldo breda delivered also delivered the train to late and also with reliability issues going on the NS SNCB needed to replace them in favor for Alstom euroduplex trainsets better known as the thallys PBA and PBKA.

    This train got a very nice acceleration: 0.58 m/s2 (ETR 400 Red Arrow and english Azuma had 0.70 m/s2). Hitachi has always done a very nice job with the acceleration.

    Very nice review, it's a pity (or not, I don't like the front personally :) those trains failed to get into a permanent service in BE/NL back then. It was a far-from-finished product at that point. Really surprising that a company like AnsaldoBreda, making all those fast and beautiful trains stumbled on this one. But it's great the trains found their use in Italy, and as can be clearly seen, they are beautifully finished (still with some quality issues). Even the Italian livery is much nicer than the Belgian one, but the Belgian one was already an upgrade from the completely dull traditional coaches. Certainly pity that Benelux didn't pick up another high-speed articulated rolling stock for BXL-AMS route.

    A year late, I know. But despite how notorious these are. I love ETR 700s. Theres somethint about them, and when they have no faults (for a change) they are splended units. Had their past not been crappy, I think they'd be with Frecciarossa or if they never returned from the Netherlands, would've been successful with Fyra. Shame that AnsaldoBreda is the train manufacturer that can be described in grunts and MMMMs.

    As to the design of the nose of the train, I personally don't like it, but it makes sense as it follows the tradition of Dutch trains of the past, those that were popularly called "Dog Head" and "Monkey Head" and there was some similar stock in Belgium too.

    Trenitalia no doubt picked them up for a snip, and I suppose Hitachi, who'd taken over the hapless AnsaldoBreda, spent a lot on putting them right on their own account, but I wonder how much they've cost the Dutch and Italian taxpayers over the years. Rather like the APT perhaps, although that actually did work pretty well from the start

    So the carriage doors inside the train won’t open and you have to manually slide it to open it. Have you reported it or has it already been reported. The train operator should be fined for not fixing the door problem whilst it’s in passenger service.

    They were rebuilt completely, that's why it took forever between them beeing declared unsafe to run on the belgian network in december 2012 (?) and their first run in Italy in 2019... Not to speak of the delay in their construction prior to 2012

    @@intersezioni you are forgetting one thing: politics. AnsaldoBreda went bankrupt and Hitachi would only buy them if there was a solution for these trains. So to safe jobs and the company, the government "asked" Trenitalia to buy these trainsets. Also, the Dutch didn't build these trains, they didn't make them 5 years late, they didn't cause them to break down, lose pieces (even complete doors!) and so on. If only I could show you the internal sncb reports... What you've seen in the press isn't even the worst.

    Doesn't seem as bad as when it was called Fyra, but then again that continuous noise...yikes. I'm happy Trenitalia didn't send those to Greece and sent 5 ETR 470s instead. 4 hours on Thessaloniki-Athens route with that weird electrical noise...nope. The company that built them, AnsaldoBreda, was known for the bad quality of its products, may it have been Fyra, Danish trains, Metrolink in Manchester...good they were bought over by Hitachi. Apparently their products have been vastly better ever since.

    @@that90skid72 The Javelin was good, but is an outlier as it was built in Japan. I've experienced many failures and delays due to train faults, and so many loose/broken parts on the Italian/British built sets.

    the more I watch these videos the more I am convinced that ppl in the UK ripped off by the TOCs.... they have sold the "fantastic" Azuma - and the rest too - trains to the public how wonderful they were but in reality they are only standard class trains compare to the rest of Europe`s trains.... it is a shame

    In my humble opinion the front design is horribly ugly. For me it looks like another desperate retro-design attempt like we have in the automotive sector. Also the uncovered couplers are not only really weird to see on a high speed train. They also unnecessarily worsen aerodynamic parameters of a train that regularly runs up to 250kph. It just doesn't make sense. But: it's just my opinion. Just a prime example of the different views on the same thing by different people. At least we could agree that these trains add some more variety to the railways.

    The front end design makes no sense until you realise it is a homage to the NS Hondekop units that used to run the Benelux unit. Like it or not, I think the FrecciaArgento livery presents these units at their best. They look stylish.

    That piece of ..., cost us Dutch a fortune. Spend some more, buy German. Costs a lot, lasts long, functions right. But no, they had to buy from an Italian tram builder. The responsible lady doesn’t work there no more. But somehow has still responsible work. The Fyra was really a mistake, quite costly too.

    @@SuperalbsTravels In December 2022, Alstom's new Intercity New Generation (ICNG) ended up in the dock, having been presented with great fanfare shortly before as the replacement for the failing Fyra. This had already aroused some "suspicion". That two out of two fast trains - despite being based on the same platform as our Pop ICNGs are 200 km/h trains - had problems on the Dutch network already seemed rather strange.
