Stunning! History is very strange, how once we were enemies and now we love the people, culture, and lands of Japan. What a wonderful country! I hope one day my daughter gets her dream of visiting Japan. Thank you for sharing your incredible country. The people of Japan were always wonderful, sad had our governments dictate our thoughts of other lands. There is such a tranquility in Japan, a very magical country. Beautiful and stunning in its own right. I will only see your country through your eyes as I am older now with no hope of ever visiting but my daughter will have the opportunity to visit in her lifetime. Still I live vicariously through her future. Thank you.

@travelgeek, what a fun trip! Those cookies/cakes look so delicious in the deli case. The Florentin actually looked a bit like the peanut butter bars I had in school as a child, I used to love having those with chocolate milk! I can remember the "strawberry soda" here as a kid but not sure how the Shizuoka tastes but I can imagine it's so good! Oh and how nice the weather is there over a month ago. The last two nights it has been -7°C here! 🥶As for the "Hello to USA on the other side...." "USA waves 'Hello to travelgeek in Japan!' ", lol. I really like the wood & architecture on the train! What a great view from Negusata! That was so nice up there. It was interesting to read more about the "Perry Expedition" and how it led to "...Japan's burgeoning trade routes with the world led to the cultural trend of Japonisme, in which aspects of Japanese culture influenced art in Europe and America."

Me fascinan esos campos verdecitos.

The true Orient Express as the European one at it's longest run only just got into Asia with London to Damascus but mainly terminated Istanbul on the European side.I did EuroNight 262/3 Orient Express a few times in the 1990's which was a normal overnight train and only ran Vienna to Paris and vice versa.

I had to laugh at the Commodore Perry bit. He threatened to shell Uraga, after steaming illegally into Edo Bay. He was supposed to return a year later but came back after only 6 months: "Perry returned on 13 February 1854, after only half a year rather than the full year promised, and with ten ships and 1,600 men. American leadership designed the show of force to "command fear" and "astound the Orientals."".
