Fan idea regarding the unique Imperial uniforms: they're Death Star issued only, compared to the standard Imperial Navy uniforms. The lack of prominent rank bars or other visually identifying details from the rank and file perhaps hinting at the top secret nature of the Death Star; where they're stationed. And of course they go out of service when the Death Star goes boom, and by the time of the second DS, to save time and resources, the Empire just keeps the standard issue Navy uniforms.

I’d like to think it’s the design difference in the time between Andor and ANH for imperial army uniforms, or simply that they don’t get pockets because it’s a classified project and security is tight

As sometimes happens when something new is being built here and is launched ahead of schedule or has a technical defect, perhaps these individuals are contractor techs from one of the companies that'd be involved in the construction of the Death Star. This type of occurrence, that comes to mind for me of such famously happening, was when the HMS Prince of Wales had sailed to intercept the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen without a shakedown cruise and still had shipyard workers on board when she and the Hood faced off against the pair of Kriegsmarine vessels in the Battle of the Denmark Strait.

i always chose to interpret it as being enlisted uniforms and as we never really seen imperials in a secure base like this again, we don't see them show up since they're not supposed to be frontline uniforms

His usage of the word useless is spot on here because the above facts do not serve to deepen your understanding of the movies. You can find it interesting and useful as examples of filmmaking techniques, but those are besides the intended use.

My guess on those weird Death Star uniforms is that they’re civilian contractors wearing Imperial-issued work wear. Even a secret project like the Death Star would need technical expertise to build, that the Empire’s military wouldn’t necessarily have. These tech reps and contractors wouldn’t hold rank and would no doubt have limited access throughout the station. These two guys were probably on their way to the galley for some lunch or something.

I kinda love the use of denim jeans in Star Wars; it makes sense that rugged frontier people like Han or that random lady would wear pants made from this material since it was originally meant for hard manual labor before it became a fashion staple. Also, it's really fun to see people in elegant robes like Leia run around next to guys in blue jeans and dingy, loose-fitting shirts like Han.

Supposedly that was a pick up shot with Joe Johnson that they threw stormtrooper armor on him and cobbled together an air pack out of model parts and scuba gear. Then they just spliced him in twice watching the Falcon dock.

The welding stormtrooper is one of my favorite parts of Return of the Jedi. Something subtle that I wish the movie had more of.

The huge reactor chamber of the Death Star II has always impressed me since I first saw it in 1983. It is huge, sterile, stark, and dangerous, all at the same time.

Fun fact about the A280 rifles, they were stolen by a former BlasTech employee who defected to the Alliance. Said employee, Corporal Janse, would later be a part of the Rebel Strike Team on Endor.

I'm going to throw out wild headcanon and say that the as-of-yet unnamed Imperial uniform is something akin to an Imperial logistics personnel. A couple of VERY obscure sources mention an Imperial logistics department, and every base/ship we see in further media would not have the same kind of logistical upkeep requirements of a fully operational Death Star. They seem more proper than say, a technician uniform which is designed for utility, but they are far more casual than that of an actual officer, so a function somewhere in-between these two posts would make the most sense.

@@robertodell9193 No shot they would let civvies on the Death Star. They genocided an entire planet just to keep the secret. I think a warrant officer rank might be interesting, but it wouldn't explain why they were not seen in training facilities, or recruitment offices which we have seen in extended media. Enlisted personnel is a strong maybe. Possibly the Imperial version of dress blues for enlisted forces considering that the army trooper uniform is already known in both canon and legends?

@@curtisharvey2330 If that were still canon, they were probably contracted to do work on it under a massive security blackout. I imagine if there were leaks, there would be situations where someone like Krennic (Hell, or even the man himself) would be sent in to retrieve said person and delete anyone who may have heard anything about the leaks.

Nice details. This sort of reminds me of the fan theory that "Clothes Buttons don't exist in Star Wars because 'advanced' 'velcro' 'binder' 'stuff", when you can see lots of buttons on clothing in backgrounds. Buttons exist in Star Wars, it's okay, promise.

For the most part, numbers and letters do not. When the ice soldier spotted imperial walkers through his binoculars in Empire, we could see what I assume were some alien letters and numbers scrolling around at the top. Other than that, not a lot of letters or numbers in the original trilogy.

this is my favorite thing about star wars. fans keep finding new things and it just makes watching the movies again that much more enjoyable. i like to imagine that part of the rebellion's whole mo was hitting imperial supply chains to steal weapons, ships, and equipment, so they end up with a ton of gear that active duty imperials are using, evening the odds. absolutely love how deep and rich this world is, often incidentally because the production team thought, "this glove looks cool, let's use it for the shot," and boom we have a high galactic easter egg that adds to the lore.

It makes absolute sense that the A280/A295 blasters would be seen in Imperial hands. Various Expanded Universe sources have hinted and depicted those traditionally "Rebel" weapons in the hands of Imperial troops, but it's nice to see confirmation in the film, even if only in the background. It always surprises me when people are surprised to learn that basically all the blasters used by the Rebels are stolen from the Empire. They're rebelling from within. The only manufacturers of military-grade small arms are manufacturing them for... the military. And the Rebels famously make a habit of raiding Imperial convoys and warehouses for supplies. Another tiny piece of evidence that shows how well thought out the world-building (galaxy-building?) for Star Wars is.

I’ve always loved that little detail of the Tie Interceptor getting destroyed from realistic pilot error. And it shows how zealous they are in their duty (except when entering the reactor, you can tell both of them do not want to risk hitting the core).

2:50 It's not mentioned here, but those "ice cream makers" (in real life) are actually "camtonos" or security / storage containers (in-universe), which would make more sense for Luke and Willrow Hood (the evacuating Cloud City citizen) to be carrying. 5:06 The "1200" and subsequent characters after could be a glove rating per EN 388 standard, which would make it: - Abrasion resistance =1/4 - Cut resistance = 2/5 - Tear resistance= 0/4 - Puncture resistance = 0/4

The word "camtono" comes from a viral KZread video of a little girl who says "camtono" when her father wants her to say "ice cream".

The commando gloves probably read Thorn-something rather than Thom. It could be a brand name, but much more likely they're just outdoor heavy work gloves that are Thorn-proof or Thorn-resistant. That's still a common feature claimed on work gloves made today.

@@CaseNumber00 problem is, I cannot find any Thorogood gloves from the 80s, they have always been a Shoe brand. Their logo did change to seem ALMOST like the one on the glove, but it looks too blocky, and I'm having issue pinning it down when it was changed. It looks more like a pair of gardening gloves if anything, maybe it has something to do with Thorn or something?

5:14 that "1200 lbs" is probably the cut resistance rating of those gloves, as in how many pounds of pressure it takes to cut through the material. What "LBS" translates to in High Galactic is a matter of headcanon, but it likely means about the same: that this particular Rebel commando was wearing gloves suited for general-purpose construction work.

LBS still means pounds but it's the British Pound Sterling monetary unit. Clearly the British Empire steals the TARDIS from Doctor Who and builds a galactic civilization in another galaxy long long ago in the past. This much is obvious. Those gloves were fixed at 1200 pounds, since the great price fluctuation of Nanda Parbat rendered all workers gloveless.

They may also be Thom Browne gloves but I can't be sure. The font looks close, but since this was the 80s, I'm not old enough to have seen gloves like that back then.

Very cool! Thank you! I was part of a campus cable TV show at Kent State University, and I did stuff behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. When I did a stint in the control room, the Grass Valley mixing board immediately stood out to me as the Death Star superlaser control panel. It was all I could do not to say "Commence primary ignition" every time I had to use the thing.

In a resource-heavy galactic war, you don't want to be the company making the big ships and fighters for only one side. You want to be the company making control panels, light fixtures, data pads, door controls... for BOTH sides! Why? Well, a weapons company can find themselves out of a customer if they built for the wrong side. Or worse, shut down by the winning side. The companies making light fixtures even have civilian customers.

I noticed a weird detail on that one poster you showed at the beginning of the video: It shows the Falcon having TWO cockpits on both sides of the mandibles, which is a very interesting error because of later lore establishing that the YT-1300 is extremely modular, so that specific configuration is highly likely to exist in-universe and also ties into the YT-1300 being a tug that pushes cargo containers so having a cockpit on both sides of the long line of containers for visibility would make sense.

Its just the millenium falcon upside down, you can clearly see the large flat areas where the landing gear goes. The top is rounded and has 6 circle vents, and a radar dish.

Your videos have made me appreciate the background details of the original trilogy so much more than I otherwise would have. So many channels talk about things with established lore, but you point out the details that no one else notices. Thank you for making such great and unique content!

In Solo in Lando's falcon there was a pair of headphones and Donald Glover points it out in the behind the scenes video. Maybe its the same pair and we're suppose to ignore the visual differences.

This channel is a gateway drug to a lot of fascinating, if obscure, behind-the-scenes Star Wars trivia, and I'm all for it.

It's always a great day when EC Henry uploads a new video. It's really interesting how many details you can get from the backgrounds, even in the movies you thought you knew it all. It makes me rethink of how much there is to find from movies that we might not even know today.

5:52 I’ve gotta admit I never noticed that! I always thought he lagged behind and got caught in the initial collapse while his friend stayed on the falcon. (There was a little dot on the screen that I had always assumed was the other interceptor).

The A280s on the wall are really interesting. My immediate thought is historical examples of certain secondary forces such as the US Marine Corps in WW2 having to find arms from non standard sources like reappropriating orders made for Dutch colonial troops. I can maybe imagine the imperial navy security forces not having enough access to E-11s and instead repurposing a shipment seized rifles meant for the alliance.

Excellent details - I definitely never noticed the Dagobah ice cream maker before. Hope you can do more videos for the OT and the other movies. Mentioning Mos Eisley extras reminded me of one fun fact - there's an extra wearing a bucket hat and goggles (same as Luke in a deleted scene) who walks by in the background of several different shots meaning that he's basically all over the place.

You're far and away the best Star Wars channel on KZread. You remind me of the old days before social media and it was fun with hang with fellow Star Wars fans who looked for stuff like this rewinding VHS tapes until they burned out!

I was going to say why not do a prequel one. So, yes, that would be something I'd be interested in seeing. Amazing vid!

I love this type of video- you could make one like this but a whole hour long and I’d watch the whole thing.

I love how a big amount of trivia comes from from the Star Wars CCG game. There a lot of obscure figures that you can barely see for more than the blink of an eye in the movies and suddenly you find out that they not only have a name but a whole set of lore sentences.

I had at least noticed the first interceptor hit by energy in the reactor. I always(at least since playing the XWing games) that the reason there was so little firing between the rebels and the interceptors in that scene was because they all had their energy directed to their engines and shields

there's another case of missing layers in the battle of endor, there's a scene where a squadron of tie interceptors are missing for a single frame.

Ah yes, the ice cream maker. The REAL reason Yoda trained Luke.

Maybe the strange uniforms on the Death Star are private contractors? They don't seem to have any insignia or rank, and they seem like they're walking with too much purpose and authority to be enlisted men.

I wonder if the reused props and set pieces is why Star Wars works so well in Lego form.

My in-universe theory on the ice cream machines is that they are portable mosture condensers, basically miniturized and simplified to provide an emergency source of water, not nearly as effective as proper moisture farming equipment like on Tatooine, but able to collect and refine enough to keep someone hydrated for as long as the power cell lasts.

It’s always cool to look at these films and find whatever you can in them, no matter the smallest detail. Thanks for the video man, keep up the great work and take care!

These deep cuts are so satisfying to me. After seeing these movies countless times, I always feel I’ve seen everything - until you drop these bombs on me.

If I were going to create an in-universe story behind the single-breasted uniforms without Imperial markings, I would say those are civilian contractors. They wear a uniform so that they are clearly identified as belonging on / at an Imperial military facility, but since they are not actually part of the military, they would have nothing on them indicating rank (etc.). Also, as civilians, the uniforms they would wear could be a little more casual (e.g. pants over boots, etc.).

Agreed; I always interpreyed those as simple civilian shoes, rather than the military jackboots. So contractors or Imperial civil service bureacrats.

Those X-Wings must have a ladder dispenser. In the deleted scene after rescuing Han, Luke chucks his ladder before closing the canopy before flying off to Dagobah.

Yes please! I'm an original '77 Star Wars kid and didn't know most of these. But again it's all the lived-in details that made the galaxy far far away so engaging.

Control panels: the panel Han sits at in the Falcon when Luke is training, is also seen in use by the Empire on the Death Star. 'TK-421, why aren't you at your post?' This old RAF man recognised it instantly. This kind of basic control console was standard in the RAF for telephone / communication / intercoms, Radar screens and controls, and is often seen in pictures of RAF Control Towers, in photos that advertise what the RAF was doing / jobs in the RAF during the late 1960s, the 1970s and went out of use (mostly) during the 1980s. I think if we look up 'ATC towers, and the WRAF airwomen that used them, we may find a few examples.

ANH had lots of Imperial costumes not seen in any of the other movies. The black officer tunics for example were repurposed fireman uniforms from the movie Fahrenheit 451.

Here's something I'd love to see if you could find out. In the 1978 Superman movie, Lex Luthor is sitting at a computer console when he activates a control that pushes the police detective onto the train tracks. That console looks EXTREMELY like a Star Wars style console. I'm wondering if they used a prop from Star Wars in that scene?

This was really cool, I love this sort of thing. Not just in Star Wars, but all kinds of movies and things.

I've seen the original trilogy more times than I could ever guess and could recite it in my sleep. this is the first time I've ever watched one of these " things you didn't know" type of videos where I actually didn't know most of the facts you shared. Wedge’s X-wing suddenly popping into existence is very similar to a wave of TIEs in that iconic shot at the beginning of the space battle. But they are invisible for more than one frame before appearing. Only noticed this during the big screen release recently

Nice video! Lots of previously unseen details. To add, in case it wasn't caught: The chap in the Home One crew cap is David Prowse out of Vader costume. The Wedge segment jumps ahead to footage from RotJ while in the ESB segment, not sure if that was an editing error or not made clear in the script. Cheers!

Bizarrely you can see those Vader shuttle pilots in ROTJ standing to attention in file as Vader walks past them as part of the honour guard in the Death Star hangar. They must have somehow beat Vader disembarking!
