Ridge Racer (PS1)

Ойындар

This video was captured using the actual game on an actual Sony Playstation.
To me, this game is a lot more than Ridge Racer. This was the first game I ever played on the Playstation. I remember thinking that it was weird that Sony was entering the gaming industry when all they were was just a consumer electronics manufacturer and had no background in gaming. My brother came home with a Playstation to try out since he worked at a computer software store and along with Ridge Racer. Naturally I was blown away by the Playstation startup screen, but when the game loaded up, I was entranced by the beauty of the visuals, sound, and gameplay. At that time I had never even played the arcade version. I didn't have to. It was simply an unforgettable experience. So unforgettable that I after I had played Ridge Racer for the short time my brother was allowed to check it out, I couldn't get excited about anything else and dreamed about playing Ridge Racer again. About a month after launch I went in half way with my brother to get a Playstation and Ridge Racer. I have been a fan of the first Playstation ever since.

I have an original Sony PlayStation (SCPH-1001) that was built in July 1995 along with the original long box copy of Ridge Racer. I believe on September 9, 1995 during the official launch of the PlayStation, my oldest brother actually came home with one along with Ridge Racer, NBA Jam T.E. and Battle Arena Toshinden. He told me how packed all electronic stores were that day. He said there were like more than 100 people waiting to buy a PlayStation along with games that come with the system.

Back when this game was released there were no better looking arcade conversions than Ridge Racer and Tekken. The biggest difference between Ridge Racer on the PS1 and the arcade was it's resolution. The PS1 also ran at 30fps as opposed to 60fps, but overall it was a very faithful port and looked way closer to it's arcade counterpart vs. any arcade port done on the Saturn at that time. Not to mention Ridge Racer was a launch title. Rage Racer and R4 looked many times better.

Ryan Severson The Japanese Saturn Bios sound was closer to being great than the American version. I always thought the Saturn's startup sounded kinda wimpy. The Japanese Saturn startup had a pretty commanding sound. Even though it wasn't all that great of a platform, the Sega CD had a pretty awesome startup too.

I feel the same way, those graphics and the music!! It's a game that doesn't take itself so seriously like boring racers these days and this is akin to as Ridge Racer V on the PS2!!! What happened to the "FUN" aspect that's so missing in today's racers?!! We have the HD graphics, the music but something is missing and I see it in the original PS1/X Ridge Racer game but I don't know what it is sadly....

Thanks. That's the number one reason why I uploaded gameplay only from real hardware so later generations had a reference to see what the game was supposed to run like. PS1 emulation is fantastic nowadays when emulating 1:1 but GPU based enhancements that make PS1 graphics look amazing can still cause some crazy graphical glitches. As you've found that massive buildings just popping in was no glitch. That was very common in racing games in this era of gaming.

Innovation is the creation of a totally new idea. There were some in on the PS1, but not as many as you think. Resident Evil yes, Tomb Raider debuted on the Saturn, Metal Gear was on the NES, Goldeneye 007 on the N64 came out 2 years before Medal of Honor, Road Rash debuted on the Genesis, Need for Speed debuted on the 3DO. Splinter Cell wasn't until the next generation on the XBOX and PC was doing 3D graphics way before the PS1. The PS1 was more renovation than innovation.

@NuffinLongEnt No, that's still me. I didn't practice much before this capture and if you notice the car is over 20mph faster in the other two races so I didn't practice enough to compensate for the speed difference. I don't set out to do perfect runs. My vids are to be used as reference, not as testaments of my gaming skill.

No. I mean the load screens, as in the screen you see while the game loads. This game's load screens were often playable old school namco games. The only "load" screen the console itself had was the start up.

The PS1 was released in the US in Sept. of 95 along with Ridge Racer. The Saturn was released in May of 1995. The only arcade port the Saturn had at that time was Daytona USA which was a sloppy port. Sega Rally and VF2 were both released in Dec of 95. in both the US and Japan which were much better ports of their arcade counterparts than Daytona USA. So it is completely fair because the PS1's Ridge Racer was considerably more impressive than the Saturn's Daytona USA.

Goldeneye did not invent the FPS, but for consoles it introduced objective based gameplay and 4 player death match via split screen. I suppose it's not fair to say that MGS was not innovative as it did introduce real time cinematic story telling. I mentioned NFS and Road Rash as more examples of renovation. My bottom line is back then the entire industry was being revolutionized by 3D graphics and the PS1 was insanely popular so the line between innovation and renovation gets really fuzzy.

You need to power slide. You let off the accelerator going into the turn and then back onto the accelerator in the middle and your back end will swing out allowing you to oversteer. Most people don't know how to play this game properly. They use the brakes and take the racing line through turns and they're either very slow or they crash into the side of the track. All Ridge Racer games have the same fictional physics. That's probably why the later installments of Ridge Racer don't hold up so well next to games like Forza Horizon.

You don't know how powerful Sega Model 2 or the Namco System 22 board was. The Model 2 had many more memorable games than the System 22 did. You're terribly biased, but not even that is the point here. The point is what I stated was a fact. The PS1 was came much closer to looking and playing like the arcades upon it's release than the Saturn did. That is why Sony's launch was a huge success and the Saturn's was a failure. If you don't like it, go cry on someone else's channel.

  • @OldsXCool
    @OldsXCool12 жыл бұрын

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I don't agree with the PS2 just being a prettier PS1. Though the PS1 was a 3D monster and did alot of things very well, the PS2 improved many aspects of many different genre's of games, not just visually. Don't get me wrong, I love the PS1 to death and it's my biggest collection, but I personally think the PS2 deserves much more credit than being a visual successor. Now comparing the PS2 to the PS3.....the PS3 is nothing but a visual update.

Again I don't care what you think, Sega is dead. I'm not going to bother explaining to a fanboy why they are because it's not worth my time. I also don't care why you think for some stupid reason that Ridge Racer was more impressive in '94 vs. 95' and don't want to know. Fanboys piss me off quicker than anyone on You Tube, because you just can't play what you like and keep your mouths shut. I'm not having this conversation anymore, and to ensure it doesn't carry on, you've been blocked.

  • @OldsXCool

Just a technicality but November would still be 4th quarter and September is 3rd. Stop guessing, the internet is a useful tool. I don't care what you think is more impressive or how many excuses you want to make for Daytona USA being a sloppy port. I bought the PS1 back in the day because I liked what I saw and played as did many others. End of story. Sega is dead. Deal with it. Stop trying to keep them alive by annoying others with your fanboyism.
