RIDERS OF THE WORLD • MEET NICK SKELTON

Nicholas Skelton CBE is a British former equestrian who competed in show jumping. He retired at the age of 59 years old, on 5 April 2017. He began riding at age 18 months and in 1975 took two team silvers and an individual gold at the Junior European Championships.
His most notable successes occurred in back to back Olympic Games in the swansong of his career. In 2012, at the age of 54, Skelton won the Olympic gold medal as part of the winning Great Britain team. In 2016, at the age of 58, Skelton won the Individual Olympic gold medal at his seventh Olympic Games. Having won both team and individual Olympic gold, Skelton and his horse, Big Star, retired together, shortly after the 2016 Games.

I allways liked him as a rider on TV in my early years, but was later fascinated to read his biography "Only Falls and Horses" where one of the last sentences was, that Nick wished that he would be able to ride the young gelding ARKO again, that he was training at the time of his severe accident. ANd 2 years later he did just that He re-entered the international showjumping scene with just that horse. Since then he is amongst my alltime horsemen favourites. 🙂

Now I understand why Harry ( his son ) is a top national hunt jockey, and Dan Skelton a top national hunt trainer.

Vielen Dank für Ihre Anmerkungen und Kommentare. Sie haben Recht, dass viele aufgegeben hätten, aber dies ist eine Geschichte der Hoffnung und Inspiration, wie Sie bemerkt haben.

@horsetvglobal: Dear Sirs, I loved this documentation. But I am sure it was recorded wel before his accident and return to the international arena. A follow up of his career would be brilliant. Did you plan that? Or maybe its already in preparation or even available? Please let me know. Best regards HH
