It's a culture clash that's preventing their potential. Bike paths could potentially be very effective commuter methods for people who don't need a car, but boomers who want to go 6 mph on a bike think anything over 15 mph is too fast, and that all those miles should only be for recreational use

EUCs are starting to hit 50mph, and escooters are hitting 70mph. There really is no reason why ebikes shouldn't be hitting ~100mph by now. Being able to take them on highways would be nice.

@@Andorski eh. A 100 lb vehicle is pretty sketchy above 50 mph. They make sense topping out between 35 and 50 mph, and cities should allow them on low speed roads and bike paths (bike paths limited to 35 mph during commuting hours and 25 during the weekend and non commuting hours)

Yes, thanks for doing the pedal test instead of just blowing it off like everyone else is doing. I was wondering whether it is geared high or low; no one else said. To me, a low gear would’ve made more sense; at least it could reasonably be limped home if we run out of juice. Gear it for 5 mph. Good job too on pointing out legal aspects. Too many people getting these and going 35 mph on bike paths is going to make eventual law enforcement unpleasant for ALL of us. They’ll have to be registered as scooters,(not even just mopeds) licensed, taxed through stickers, etc.

I don't know where these 15 and 20 mph top range have come from. From my first bike a 3 speed gazelle I could cruise at 25 and down hills over 35. A French racer gets you up around 48 mph. (They don't do good with curbs) my old mountain bike which I set up as a road bike got to the mid thirties. When I first got my ride1up 700xr I hacked the controls and hit 38 on the flats but it used too much juice. Downhill I've hit 48 mph but the bike really wants to stand up and go straight at speed. I'm happy with the bike.

it would be nice to see more e moped /motorcycles fill the gap between powerful ebikes and 125cc or more equivalent e motorcycles like metacycle or zero. something with power similar to unrestricted 2 stroke mopeds/scooters we used to have with around 5hp/50moh. without 50cc regulation it could even be in 5kW/8hp territory that gives goid acceleration to go with traffic or even get in front, but not necessarily highway speeds, like 50 mph like a sur Ron power train in a lightweight road motorcycle with mirrors, blinkers, etc and plates for registration depending where you live. highway speeds requires adequate superior braking, stability, tires, etc whereas just getting better acceleration on a 50mph motor is more like a safety feature to blend in traffic and it's nowhere large displacement motorcycle where handling the power and keeping speed in check can be challenging. here in Maryland moped law is a joke though with 30mph/1.5hp

cool motorcycle styled e moped ! not exactly as good looking as super73 but specs over style! 90Nm is good but you probably need all of it to tackle steep hills with a single speed an very long gearing. plus nothing feels as lame as an ebike that goes very fast on the flatbut completely bogs down on hills. except if you live in Florida or Netherlands of course. Micah, if I had one thing to say about your reviews, it's the lack of climb tests. I can't decide myself between a fast e moped like this, a 4000 metacycle , and building a fast bike I know I should get the 3 but is an expensive hobby!

I love my current Ariel Rider Grizzly and it was at the time I bought it the best option for that kind of e-bike, but this Revv1 thing in particular could be giving it a run for its money especially with the battery expansion thing and I love to see it, strong competition, strong industry.

it's the controller box. looks way too big for peak 1500W though. grin technology makes phase runner V6 with 90v/90A =8.1kW peak and 4kW nominal that takes a very small fraction of that space.

I bet at top speed 36mph if controller is spitting out close to it's 1500W peak power it's about 40minutes of runtime so about 24miles. or more likely 20 minutes near too speed, then progressively slowing down

@@jeremycline9542 as Micah said even if it has long gearing so you might be able to keep up with the cadence, you'd need a lot of power to make a difference at 36mph, the motor is probably already maxed out or already starting to lose power, and with the large seat, short cranks, doesn't seem like a great option anyway. there's also probably not a lot you can do to increase speed. 36mph for a 750W bafang on 20in wheels is already a lot! 52V means not a lot of higher voltage battery options, so even a custom more powerful controller would probably give little top speed gains

Micah, can you help us understand what is really going on with the components of this ebike? Ride1Up's spec sheet says they are using a 28 amp controller. 52v @ 28amps on a Bafang G60 motor does not equal 37 MPH real world speed on flat ground with any other ebike on the market. They seem to be using the stock Bafang G60 cast wheelset that has been out for a few years and its capabilities are well understood by Grin Tech and others. What gives? Are they using a super high RPM motor winding on their G60 and fibbing about the amperage of their controller? I don't understand how a 20 inch Bafang G60 wheelset hits 37mph with 52v on flat ground otherwise. Especially on a heavy bike with poor aerodynamics as you pointed out in this video.

Probably playing catch me if you can with regulators. The federal and state DOT have better things to do than test e-bikes that weigh 80 lbs to make sure they aren't cheating regulations. There is also a $2000 barrier to entry on these things, so it isn't like it would be easy for dumb kids to buy, only dumb adults (and most dumb adults will buy real motorcycles instead since they aren't limited to 35 mph)

I don't understand why they don't just offer a kit that lets you unlock it and give you a set of DOT turn signals and a certificate of origin as a moped. This seems pretty similar in capability to an old Tomos 50cc, it looks like outside of the turn signals being too close together it wouldn't be much to make it legal as such

  • @redwolfexr

Its because of the legacy moped laws that require plates and registration -- I had a moped license and a titled moped at 15 -- 40 years ago. It was specifically a "gas" vehicle. So these new electric class 2 and 3 bikes don't need a MC endorsement, registration, plates or insurance. And they can be really cheap because they don't need to be road certified. So they want to keep the bikes cheap and not have to deal with any state DOTs. Its one reason there just aren't that many electric motorcycles that can be plated and ridden on highways.

Nice looking. I wonder if it climbs any better in class 2 mode than a standard 750 watt hub. I'd accept a 20 mph cap if it didn't mean slowing to a crawl or pedaling to even move on hills (as with most 750 watt hubs).
