    My parents surprised me with an order for one of these for christmas when i mentioned looking into e bike. This thing looks majorly convinent for people who dont want to buy or use a bike rack on their car, or dont have a lot of space. But dont want to sacrifice much in the way of power or quality.

    Excellent review, very helpful. I especially liked your comments regarding the value of having a front suspension when you found out that having a locked out suspension was so firm riding. Also am impressed with your responsiveness to the comments. These folding ebikes with the straight across handlebars seem like they would be awkward to ride because they look like they pull you forward in an unnatural riding position. Do you find that to be true and if so, would you recommend aftermarket handlebars to improve riding comfort? Thanks.

  • @ebikingtoday

    @ebikingtoday

    5 ай бұрын

    Thanks Thomas... I really appreciate your comment. I think the handlebar position has a lot to do with the fit of the bike to the rider, and it's also a personal decision. Personally, I prefer swept-back handlebars on most ebikes because I'm a smaller rider and they help me sit comfortably. However, the Portola's straight handlebars still keep me sitting up straight (so, no, they don't pull me forward). If you have shorter arms, in relation to the rest of your body, it could be more of a reach. This is why buyers should take measurements and confirm the size and fit specifications before taking the plunge! Also, if you're not sure that the handlebars that come with the bike are for you, talk to the brand's support to make sure you will be able to switch handlebars after purchase :)

    The Portola sounds perfect go.ride1up.com/SH5A , but my other favorites are the 700 Series go.ride1up.com/SHP and Cafe Cruiser go.ride1up.com/SHa . All are plenty powerful and capable... consider your budget and best fit. I'm 5'1" and fit well on all the step-through models. At 5'4", the step-throughs should also fit you best.

    I haven't reviewed the Fold (alnk.to/aANNyEI), but it looks comparable, although a tad more expensive. I have heard from many that they love the Portola (go.ride1up.com/SH5A). Compare features and sizing to see which is right for you :)

    Is there any other e-bike folding or not that you would recommend over this one at the SAME price point? Colorado residents are getting a $450 credit towards e-bikes starting Monday and this is top of my list as I was looking to be out of pocket about $500-600. Thanks!!!

    I don't think anything will beat the Portola at the price point; the 750W motor ( go.ride1up.com/SH5A ) alone on a folding bike at this price is amazing but perhaps check out Lectric for a couple of options: lectricebikes.sjv.io/b3nY1g Best wishes!

    Did you find the handle bars not being adjustable to be an issue?

  • @ebikingtoday

    @ebikingtoday

    3 ай бұрын

    I didn’t. The handlebars are close and let you sit straight up… this could be an issue if you’re very tall & end up leaning forward slightly. You can always twist the handlebars forward or back to adjust the fit.

    Cant seem to find any pics or reviews with child passenger. Any opinion on how comfortable it would be for a 9 year old on the back? Looks like the seat slightly overhangs the rear rack compared to lectric 3.0

  • @ebikingtoday

    I think it depends on how high the cyclist's seat is. Check out the passenger kit at go.ride1up.com/SH5D ...there's one customer pic with a child on the back. Looks to me like a 9-year-old would fit just fine... even a teenager :)

    What do you mean pre-load? And seat bottoming out? Im a short, heavier woman but way less than weeight limit .. do you mean my seat may drop as I ride? BTW, I have the same van ..but dogs...

  • @ebikingtoday

    @ebikingtoday

    6 ай бұрын

    The preload adjustment on the fork is designed primarily to accommodate your weight and secondarily to match your riding style. It refers to the initial compression of the spring inside the fork. Increasing the preload results in greater spring compression, leading to a stiffer fork feel. A higher preload setting, which compresses the spring further, is ideal for heavier riders or those who favor a stiffer riding experience. Conversely, lighter riders should opt for a lower preload setting. Reducing the preload also offers a more plush and comfortable ride. So, yes, bottoming out just means that your seat could compress all the way down and give you a good bump! Wow, I've never met anyone yet with the same van! How do you like it?

    @@ebikingtoday hanks for the explanation..., there always are van issues, but I enjoy the van... I've driven cross country 2x in this one and this last year my sister came for 10 days and my 2 dogs. I liked having the love seat there for the dogs... usually one sits in passenger seat, so I like having the other one close..where do you stow the bike in there? I have a rack for bike...but looking for a bike not so bulky and heavy in riding.. Quality bike though... I have an Addmotor M-140 P7 and a slight leg issue. And the Addmotor is pretty substantial bike but I have fallen off 4x as I couldn't manage it at corners on streets that dip down at the curb I'm 5'2" but petite inseam. It is 4" tires and bike 70 lbs. I'm wondering if a Portola will be better fit for me

  • @ebikingtoday

    @ebikingtoday

    6 ай бұрын

    @@user-qh6vg9tg7z You bet! The Portola is wonderfully lightweight and manageable. I'm 5'1" and think it's a great choice. Tires are only 3" wide, but they make the bike that much easier to use. Also, that's a perfect way to take your pups with you! So far, we haven't taken our bikes anywhere for more than a day, so we just slip them in the middle of the van. Even that is tight and we have to move slow so we don't damage the van or the bikes (we prop them with blankets/pillows). Considering getting a rack on the back but haven't done it yet :)

    Hey Kim! I haven't heard anything bad about customer service. In fact, I've read the Portola customer reviews that said they were happy with customer service (one person said it took too long for them to respond, but they were very helpful). If you haven't, read the reviews (go.ride1up.com/SH3X) and see if that makes you feel better. I do know that my experience reviewing Ride1Up e-bikes has been extremely positive and the bikes are very good quality for the price. I suppose we all just hope that we don't actually need customer service 😄 Other than that, the Portola is a great price for a lightweight folding e-bike! Best wishes finding what you're looking for!
