I'm not sure if any other Ride fans have info on this, but at the time (1991-1993), there were a lot of UK bands with band names that didn't have the "The" in front, e.g. Lush, Slowdive, Ride, Verve ("The" added later), Loop, Chapterhouse, Curve, etc.
