Ride-along with New York State Troopers

PAINTED POST, N.Y. (WETM) - New York State Police are launching a campaign to recruit new troopers to join the ranks. “We’re recruiting hard this year. We have a test that we’re giving out. It starts July 1st and goes through October,” said NYS Trooper Richard Cunningham, a 21-year-veteran of the force who is also a recruiter.
“We’re doing a really hard push to try to get people to sign up for the test. We’re going to be at your local fairs, sporting events, look for us. We’ll have flyers, we have handouts, we have lots of information for people to gather to understand what they have to do to become a State Trooper and also locations to take the test,” said Cunningham.

My Dad was a NY State trooper for 25 years and worked along that Route 17 corridor. As a family, we'd drive it each summer on our way out to Western New York and my dad would hook up a CB radio and let my brother and I talk to the truckers. Things were definitely a lot simpler back then, with our 1978 Ford Country Squire station wagon, a canoe on the roof and CB radio chatter breaking the silence.

82 in a 65? Cars doing 82 here in Florida drive in the far Right lane and are literally the slowest vehicles on any interstate or the turnpike roads.

I'm glad there first thought was Where to stop the car so it was safe for all, maytimes as a truck driver I see cops pulling cars over in VERY dangerous spots leaving the patrol car partly over the white line only making it likely a car or semi will hit them as cars normally won't yield and let a truck over even with there left turn signal is on cause the car doesn't want to slow down or be behind a truck...

@@unknown4091 Unfortunately it's all at their own discretion when it comes to tickets. I know that if I was an officer myself, I would ticket people based on the speed of all other drivers, not just that of the speed limit sign. 90% of cars going 40 in a 30 does not warrant a ticket; the 2% of cars going 45+ in that 30 deserve a ticket. Although I am an avid police supporter and understand that these cops are still acting within the law, it says a lot about their character when it comes to the offenses they actually ticket people for. A cop ticketing you for 72 in a 55 is an a**hole; no other way around it.

In NY, State Police vehicles have the "right" to "move through traffic" in the far left lane at whatever speed they deem reasonable. That's how patrolling a Highway works. With that said, If. Sheriff or County/City Cop, on duty or not, was doing 90mph down i87 - They may very well be pulled over by the State Police as they are out of their jurisdiction & have no reason, within the scope of their policing, to be moving through traffic on a highway like that. With all that said, Modern vehicles (1999-Today) Can waft down the highway at 110mph+ as if they're doing 70mph but that's a different/useless subject to discuss.

I’m a native New Yorker and my cousin was a cop who was shot and killed on the job in 1983. I support cops. But if my 27 year old son today said he wanted to become a cop in a state like New York, with a bunch of leftists in control, I would tell him not do it. If he truly wanted to be a cop, there are places where the Governor and local politicians still have your back and you’re not subject to woke bullshit and people second guessing every action you take. Anyone with sense has left states like NY and CA by now.
