RIDE ALONG! 1951 Kenworth, Mercury Bunk, 220 Cummins, Rear dump split manifold, Timkin rear ends.

This is my 1951 Kenworth. Originally was a United Truck Lines rig when new. came factory with a Buda Diesel and was repowered with a 220 cummins. Rear Dump split manifold. 4&4 transmissions. Timkin worm drive rear ends on torsion bar suspension. The Mercury bunk is one of the oldest ones known having being built in Bell California which was their 1st location of production. Hasn't been on the road in 2 years so she was stiff trying to shift and steer with 1 hand!

I used to haul sand and gravel in my 52 peterbilt. It had a 300 cummins with the backdrop manifold and sounded just like this one. The 300 cummins was a 220 with a roots blower. That sucker could pull and I always loved the sound of that exhaust pulling up the grade. It's no wonder i have to wear hearing aids now. I would love to get back behind the wheel of a truck like yours and just two stick my way to oblivion! Hahaha

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 I noticed the hood mirror right away! I know what that’s for!! The brief walk around was good at the beginning. Is that a Dorsey trailer as well? I’ve pulled a few of them in my day & I’m not that old. My dad bought several to use for storage & transporting tires & wheels to Ohio. What a unique sound! I love the old trucks, but even more so when connected to an old trailer as well! Do you keep this truck in a garage or barn? That mirror is for looking at the sparks from the exhaust. I’ve heard many stories about the old trucks & the sparks they made. I come from a trucking family & have heard many unique stories from the drivers. It looks like both of the tattletale boxes work. It has been a while since I’ve seen 2 of them in a truck. Good stuff! Thanks for sharing! Blessings! 🥰😎✌️

They were called tattle tales. 1 is your mph the other is your tach. The clock in the middle is your old school e log. You inserted a white round paper disk in every morning, wound the clock up, set the time and go to work. Inside there's a scribe that marks your every rpm, speed, and if you're running on time, speeding or over reving the motor. At the end of the day you'd turn that into your dispatcher and he could see how your day went all from the scribes on the paper.

I couldn't bring myself to cut a hole in the cab to crawl in the bunk, so I put plywood over the hole on the inside with vinyl interior. The outside I covered with aluminum. Mercury never made anything but sleepers as far as I know. This bunk was built at the 1st of their 4 locations, Bell California. According to 1 Mercury historian guy, this was the oldest Mercury he's ever come across. I've decided to leave the truck alone with its current paint job. The truck brand new was all red, rims frame cab and hood. Originally bought by United Truck Lines of Spokane Washington. I have all paperwork and owners on the truck. Had a Buda diesel when new and was supposedly recalled to have a cummins 220 installed due to issues with Buda engines.

People like you are the reason that I haven't completely lost faith in humanity. You would really do me a big favor! How can I show my gratitude? Name the model after you? @@thesteelcowboy1621

I don't want to seem rude, but can I ask about the dimensions again? I wouldn't bother you if there was another option. Unfortunately I don't have them here in Germany. Thank you for your effort!@@thesteelcowboy1621

Yes. Philip lives a few miles up the road. Great man and friend. I have pulled it at Kasson for probably 17 years. Various forms of dress, no bunk, 60 inch Merc and now this 36 inch Mercury. I appreciate your kind words. Thank you

Fact - If you ran up on a 4 wheeler with that truck, they would think they were gonna get murdered.

Honestly was told that 1 time. I was getting fuel at a gas station and a woman kept staring. She went in and paid for her gas then walked straight to me saying, this thing? This truck! Looks like a nightmare hahaha. Thank you? I said lol. 😆

@The Steel Cowboy HA nice! 🍺 And it's a great truck. Can't wait to get one. But for now it's kids taking my money. I'm a KW guy but opted for a Western Star for my first big truck. Everyone's got their first right
