Ricoh GRIIIx VS GRIII - Which one to choose?!

The Ricoh GRIIIx is the newest camera in the GR lineup. Although it is almost identical to the Ricoh GRIII, there are some differences. Is it just a matter of choosing between the 28mm equivalent lens versus the 40mm equivalent lens? Or are there other things to take into consideration? In this video we are going to dive into the Ricoh GRIIIx vs GRIII dilemma: Which one to choose?
I hope you like the video, if so, plz subscribe! It would be much appreciated :)

    I actually really like that Ricoh didn't make a big difference between the two models. For one, the GR is pretty close to perfect (I mean sure there's a few things I wish it had if I could get everything I wanted), so just giving it a different lens makes sense. But even better, I'm sick of the artificial changes that companies make in their lineup for marketing purposes that make it so neither camera is what you really want and each has pieces you want. Here Ricoh took a great camera, gave it a new lens because fans asked for it, but didn't take away anything for no reason. 👍

    For traveling in my opinion is 28mm more practical. Tight places and narrow streets get tricky with 40mm. If the city is big with large streets 40mm would be easier to handle, since everything will feel far away. If you sit in a bus you will use 28mm. If I am making a vlogging vedio i would use 40mm but this is not the point of this camera

    The big realization I came to while watching was that if I want a wider shot on the GRIIIx, I can do a handheld pano (==bigger resolution photos), whereas if I want a tighter shot from a GRIII, I need to crop (==smaller resolution photos). I do believe you've resolved my doubts.

    Pano is a great option in still photography, but not when you're capturing people or boats or anything that moves. I am a big fan of higher focal length lenses on my full frame, but for the purpose of the gr, I would prefer the wide angle in this pocketable point and shoot cam.

    Niels, thx for posting the video as I’ve been going back and forth between the GR3 and GR3x and I really like the wider shots of the 28mm compared to,the 40mm on the GR3x so would it be safe to say that if wanted a closer shot of a subject that I should just get closer? Or, am I overlooking some dynamic of focal length in which my simple solution isn’t as simple as it sounds? Thx

    Thanks - This is the best comparison video between the two cameras I have seen so far. It would be very helpful if you did another video comparing snap focus, because from the charts I’ve seen, the depth of field of the new camera is much shallower than the original, so I’m presuming snap focus will not be as effective?

  • @NielsdeKemp

    @NielsdeKemp

    2 жыл бұрын

    Because of the different focal length, the depth of field is shallower… Snap focusing is just as effective but you will get a narrower field of focus. You could use your aperture to get the field of view you like. It just acts different, also because at 40mm you might pick subjects just a little bit further away 👌 Thanks for your comment!

    40mm is considered by many to be around the ideal street shooting focal length giving a balance between 50mm and 28mm, so just wide enough, but gives you more ability to fill the frame in some situations too. Pentax used to do 43mm lens that was very well regarded. Personally I prefer 35mm with a larger aperture, so I have an RX1Rii. Far more expensive, but it does have a full frame sensor and a superior Zeiss Sonnar lens

    I would say if you have a dslr with a zoom lens go around and shoot with it set at 28mm for a day and then another day go around at 40mm. See which one is letting you grab the photos that you want. But only use one or the other each day that way you can see if one of them makes you frustrated.

I bought the GRIII X first late last year then was blown away - a little and a literal pocketable camera with a crop sensor that you can bring with you anytime, anywhere (well, except on extreme weather situations). Then after a month, I realized I need something wider. Then I bought the GR III. With these cameras, I used my A7R IV less and less as time passes by... 😅

  • @RonScibilia
    @RonScibilia2 жыл бұрын

    The x model, as I weigh things, negates the value of "snap focus," which is one of the very best features the GR line offers. The in-focus zone is significantly smaller with the 40 compared to the 28 even at, say, f/8. If you need the 40mm perspective you can crop in. If your main focus is portraits, there are better cameras; you really need at least 75mm (equiv.) for good portraits if you want to flatten the perspective. (I have both the GR II and III, among others.). My choice is the standard GR III.

  • @NielsdeKemp

    @NielsdeKemp

    2 жыл бұрын

    I understand… I do however feel you can still use snap focus at 40mm, even though the in focus area is smaller. Cropping of course makes you lose pixels, so that’s not ideal… if your main goal is to shoot portraits or course you should go with something else entirely but if you put al the pro’s and con’s in the scale, I do really like the X! (And totally respect your choice of course 😉)

    Ik ben al lang op zoek naar een inzicht over de GR3 vs GR3x. Fantastische uitleg dit! Maar toch.. Ik heb een Fujifilm X100V en wil iets meer een 'pocketable' camera. Dus ik kijk naar de GR3(x). Soms is de 35mm van de Fuji te krap en zou ik liever wijder kunnen. Maar 28mm lijkt me dan weer teveel "alsof je met je telefoon fotografeert". Ik ben bang dat de 40mm soms nog meer te krap zal zijn (zeker indoors). Dan de GR's: Waarom zou je een GR3x aanschaffen als je al een GR3 hebt? Is de GR3 stiekem te wijd? Werkt crop/digitale zoom niet goed genoeg? Ik kom er niet uit. Als iedereen met een GR3 gewoon zou digizoomen/croppen dan zou ik direct voor de GR3 gaan. Maar omdat de GR3x bestaat en mensen ze ook allebei hebben zie ik niet wat ik mis.

Anywho, I was just curious if you had adapted your own in-camera filter settings with the photos you showed in this video or if they were raw photos and changed in post editing? I have a GRD-IV. Obviously it's not 2022 state-of-the-art. However. . . It has some charms. The small sensor and 6mm lens gives huge depth-of-field, which is sometimes just what the doctor ordered for street photography. It's tiny and lightweight even compared with other GR-series models. It has sensor stabilization like the GR III, but also a built-in flash like the GR II. It has native 4:3 aspect ratio, which I personally am fond of. It also conveniently uses the same battery as my GR II. (The GR III is the odd one out with a different battery.)

I stick mine in a sandwich bag and then in my pocket - particularly useful in very cold weather as you can drop a desiccant sachet in and avoid condensation issues when going between heat and cold. I also find that on a windy day on a beach its best to put a cheap adapter and polariser or clear filter on to keep sand away from the lens making it safer than using my interchangable lens cameras.

    Cropping doesn’t get rid of distortion inherent in a wider lens; a cropped 28mm shot is still a 28mm shot!

    So does the GRIII and you’ve got more pixels to play with. I would definitely get the GRIII and use the crop feature ahead of the GRIIIx, if you can’t move back you’re buggered.

    I honestly do not think anything can touch the Canon m200 or the m6II with a fast 22mm pancake, or even faster wide angle lense.

    It seems anti consumer to not allow the x to shoot wider or the non-x to shoot more tele. Pretty obvious that Ricoh is trying to tempt people to buy both cameras, rather than buying one with an adapter lens that gets you close to the other camera..

    The whole existence of the IIIx is because the consumer asked for it… To call it anti consumer, don’t agree with that :)

    I was thinking about the conversion lens too. Couldn’t Ricoh make a tele lens for the 28 that would make it a 40?
