    I was on team Issac until I opened up both of their pdga pages for the year and sorted by place, and then it was clear. Calvin is the player of the year. His season was crazy good.

    Brodie’s point that Calvin’s worst finish was Isaac’s average finish was a crazy stat to put forward. That should settle it right away. Over every style of course over the whole year, Calvin proved he can be in contention no matter what the course was. Isaac is a specialist and excels at certain types of courses. It just happens that the Majors he won were at courses that suited his style whereas Calvin proved he has the ability to win at any and every course and did it the whole year

    Champions cup was definitely wooded, but worlds was highly varied holes that demanded a lot of skill across a variation of shots. And the temperature of Isaacs blood is waaay lower than Calvins - not really buying your argument

    @@mortenlundkristensen7050here’s another one: calvin beat isaac 16 to 6. any player can pop off in a tournament and win. Isaac is great but his stats for the whole year speak for themselves. he got his title: world champion. Calvin’s is POTY not player for a couple tournaments

    I guess coming from competitive team sports i dont value top finishes as you do. The objective is to win and while anyone 'can" do it there is a reason that Isaac is the world champion. And while the stats and scorecards don't have pictures or vid ive seen the tournaments where Calvin put himself in the drivers seat and then forgot how to drive (well, putt) so many times it hurts my eyes.

    @@mortenlundkristensen7050i get that its just that if the award was who won the most then Gannon is POTY because he has the most tour wins. from a team’s sports perspective, i am a big college football fan. grew up in Alabama, but im an Auburn fan. there are plenty of instances in which Auburn pulled off a crazy win against Alabama in the Iron Bowl. just because they had one incredible win doesnt mean they are a better team than Alabama over the season. obviously the biggest difference is that wins are the measure of success in that sport. but again id say if the POTY was based on wins alone then Isaac isnt even in contention for that. i definitely agree tho. as a huge calvin fan it has been exceedingly frustrating to see him miss multiple inside the circle putts that costed him the W. if he made like 1/3 of those then he would have won an insane amount of tournaments this year

    I think Ricky said it best. The fact that there was a cut AND a reset made it so that the battles at the top AND the bottom were irrelevant for the first two rounds. The most interesting part of the first two rounds was the “battle for 12th” which is never a good thing. The other thing, the end of year schedule next year is a nightmare for fans. If they’re worried about fans not showing up, just look at next year. In a row, it goes: Worlds, Playoff, Playoff, USDGC, Tour Championship, Champions Cup.

    Add a sponsorship brand team tournament at the beginning of each season. 4-8 players from each brand represented plays in either a tennis or cross country scoring style. This would allow brands to get their new roster up in front of people, as well as allowing lesser known brands to get some airtime, while being lined up against the pros from the big brands. They'd have to have a play in tournament though (possibly giving a bye to top 4 or so teams from last season), fixing the number of teams that makes the tournament, allowing the cream to rise, bur parity to exist, say 8-12 teams. It'd put more meaning behind the terms like "Team Discraft", etc...

    I think the semi-final/final format is ok. I think they should change it to where the first day is a play-in for the top 24 who missed the finals in a one round playoff with the top 4 advancing. From there make it a 3 round tournament with stroke advantages similar to this year. All 36 play the final 3 rounds. I think this might create some excitement especially the first day to see who can make it in plus it would make it a bit more interesting for spectators than having just 8-12 players to watch.

    Season isn't about being good one or two weekends. If we take the whole season as one long tournament then Calvin threw the fewest amount of shots. If you had a score for the whole season he won that by a landslide. If at any random day during the past season on any random course and random hole you'd want someone to throw that shot it would be Calvin. Someone can have their perfect woods course they like playing on in their favorite weather with their favorite t-shirt on and win a tournament over one weekend. What made Calvin the best player over the year was it didn't matter where or when they played, he was always near the top. The ones you're comparing him to had off-weekends and courses they couldn't figure out way more than Calvin did. Thus he was the best player over the whole season. But I am a Calvin fan so take it for what it is.

    Re:filming disc golf. I know it's hard to pull off in practice but i've always enjoy watching discs fly from the side, it gives you an idea of just how long the holes are. Depth isn't obvious if you film from the front or the back, the line is, but not depth. Drone shots are ok for that but not ideal.

    Statistically, Calvin is far and away the best player of 2023. But probably a simpler way to look at it - if you asked all the pros on the last day of a tournament and Calvin, Isaac & Gannon were in contention, 'who do you fear most', i think a majority would say Calvin. I think Calvin is the most 'feared' player in the field. I think in general, in any given tournament, people view Calvin as the guy to beat.

    For me, it had a lot to do with the format. I like brackets and when there can be some underdogs. Also, I came in expecting the same layout as last year. Hole 18 was like 6th and I was like uhhhhh. The last 3 holes are eh.

  • @Discsforbaskets
    @Discsforbaskets8 ай бұрын

    Question: do volunteers have any choice as to where they volunteer on the course? I feel like moving people around to a different hole or different priority each day could really enhance the experience for volunteers and spotters that just get stuck in an open field for hours by themselves as opposed to a udisc volunteer that gets to follow a card and be up close. One reason i turn down udisc volunteering is because I'll miss everything else about the tournament, like a spotter on hole 11 at USDGC just watching discs land in an open field/hill all day and not even from a fun vantage point.

    Regarding the media of the sport...idk if anyone else has gotten tired of long format post production. I find myself tuning in every week to the free live round then watch the round recaps on the dgpt KZread page. I find myself missing half the jomez content this year. I think it would be worth an experiment to do condensed rounds like the dgpt does daily and have the commentary really highlight the good shots. Like if you play hole 1 but 2 through 5 are really boring with bogeys and par frames, maybe you show a few interesting shots from that stretch but the 3 holes take up as much time as one currently. Then you could add more value to the good shots and the story lines. Videos also being 10 to 20 minutes rather than 30 to 45 will be way better for consuming all the content available.

  • @anhpham2733
    @anhpham27338 ай бұрын

    So the podcast group thinks the best statistical season is POTY? At what point do you say this person performed well enough (not necessarily the best) with a combination of huge wins? Issac is third top 10 finishes. If you use statistics in comparison to the current field of players, I think you also have to look at it by the scope of rankings as well. Being 3rd in top 10 finishes is also significant. While Calvin is by far ahead of that, Issac has 2 huge wins, one of those is worlds. If Calvin had only 0-1 wins people would have said Issac is POTY. How much weight are we really putting on wins because wins are significant in the eyes of the player and awards for many sports?

  • @Fameandcolor
    @Fameandcolor5 ай бұрын

    Saying Calvin only finished outside top 10 once says alot about his game. He good at any course you put him at and Issac did amazing at some and bad at others. Meaning overall he just is the better player in any circumstance/style of course.

  • @JasonIBasri
    @JasonIBasri8 ай бұрын

    People need to stop dumbing this down to Calvin’s consistency vs the 2 majors. Issac was also decently consistent and competitive enough the rest of the season, as well, so his majors aren’t flukey. Calvin not getting a major is the sus piece.

    Interesting points about Worlds, in my head it makes sense to have Worlds be more exclusive with fewer spots to play, but with a points qualification and played at the end of the season. This would paint a clearer picture of the best player in the world vs someone just playing out of their mind that week or on that course especially with the growing talent across the entire field. Also, having the USDGC after Worlds just doesn’t make sense.

    @@JW-ff1nc oh yeah, it's great having half the tournaments spoiled for you before you get a chance to watch them. Watching live is much better. I love jomez, but come on, I've had lots of tournaments spoiled for me

    I think we should keep worlds, keep it elevated above all else, and make it no less than 6 rounds. I think that virtually guarantees the world champ is the one that is playing the best and most consistent at that time. If not, stop calling it world champion and rename it something else.

    I feel like no one went to the playoffs because it doesn’t carry as much weight, like winning the playoffs isn’t a major win, it’s kind of in this weird no man’s land that people don’t know what it it. To disc golf fans worlds is the big deal, I don’t know why they don’t have that at the end of the season. People just don’t value disc golf playoffs very highly

    Brodie, I think those 3000 viewers on the live round are concurrent views not total views. You might have 20k people that watched the event, just not all at the same time. Different people tune in and drop off all the time, it's a long event.

    Id say 3k concurrent live viewers is very low for a pro sport live audience. I think if it was free it would be more, and it would grow much faster

    Throw Pink this year has a huge asterisk beside it. Not relevant to this conversation, except how coverage could have actually helped make the correct call, but can't be forgotten.

    The James Proctor argument is moot. He was playing to make the cut. Everyone got a bonus to attend. It's the same as missing cash in a regular tournament. The first guy to miss and the last guy still get $0. That's the format, it's fair.

    The price of tickets is another reason why people didn't go to DGPT Championship. The USDGC Gold Pass was $250. The DGPT was $750 and it did not include everything USDGC gave us. They got greedy and it shows.

    Holy frick! 750 dollars!?! I dont think they could do anything to get me to spend 750 bucks to spectate a disc golf tournament in person. The value is simply not there. I cant even think of any kind of perks that would get me to do that. Thats just so crazy to me

    I really didn’t care for using Nevin for the Tour Championship. Way too much luck to determine a champion. You could have an almost identical shot as someone else, but be an inch or two different and take a kick that lands you in jail. I want to see skill cause the win/loss, not good/bad luck.
