Before this time, most non-Latino Americans had never heard of Martin until what CNN reported was a show-stopping performance of "La Copa de la Vida" at the 41st Grammy Awards show, which became a catalyst in bringing Latin pop to the forefront of the U.S. music scene. I believe the term should be 'show-saving' performance.

I know he was already known to Latin music culture, but I remember watching this live and it was like a shot of adrenaline in my arm. That was also the night Madonna won all her Grammys for Ray of Light and I remember that she loved his performance so much she is said to have gone to him that very night backstage and that’s when she offered him to duet with her on Be Careful (Cuidado Con Mi Corazon)

Oh, so good! Keep in mind that he was barely known in North America -- and even then, it was via Menudo. This performance changed all that and it was ELECTRIC. Ricky says that he was singing phonetically here as his English was heavily accented and he wanted to be understood by everyone. He is so handsome, sexy and incredibly talented. Do you really want it? Oh, yes!!

Looking back, it's pretty remarkable that he didn't move very much during this performance. He let his beautiful face, his leather pants, power poses, a killer beat, a catchy melody, and a few background performers do all the work for him. Bravo!

Actually, he danced a lot, but he was off screen for much of it because the camera was showing the percussion musicians coming down the aisles. The whole time Ricky was dancing on stage. You can see him when the camera pans back to the stage.

Wei Shan Chen The ability to make audience move and feel the music doesn't depend on "the time", it depends on the performer. For instance, Adele can just stand with the microphone and sing and nobody will left unsatisfied

I know a lot of people said this is what made Latin music shine. This was the starting point of not just Ricky Martin's career but so many other Latin artists. Latinos were always there, always in the background. Always on the sidelines whenever people got what they got but didn't care how it was put there in the first place. But this was when there was some manner of respect coming through for us and it was great that it became a culture everyone could enjoy all over the world. Now it's like we're a virus that needs to get blocked off like the coronavirus. I'm so proud of that part of my heritage that Latinos and Native Americans can still persevere at dangerous times and show that no matter how we get knocked down we'll get up because we have work to do and family to take care of. It's a beautiful thing when people can appreciate other cultures and not be bigotted because some power hungry narcissist thinks that we are obsolete and not worthy to be here. Here is some proof that we are relevant and worthy. Even if it was just for a music awards show, we still have so much to offer.

That day Latinos broke the door and entered the party to never leave, what Ricky accomplished is beyond words, the world stood up and still dancing to international sounds, before him there have been many legends, one of their kind, but after Ricky and legends like Shakira, Latin music is no longer and exception in USA radios.

Gracias Ricky Martin, eres grande!!
