I prefer the Hi Gains for the fuller mids, but the Toasters for a twelve string is the bomb.

@@guitargearconnection The amp is set super bright and clean, no wonder the tone is pretty thin, with both pickups actually (worse with the toasters). No mean to offend, just my opinion based on my experience with the AC30 circuit(s)...

It's like turning on a switch between the hi-gains vs the toasters. It seems the toasters are the way to go if you want to do the Monkees, the mosquitos and Jan and Dean and the Byrd's.. they are just thin and super trebely due to the lower resistance . Hi-gains all day long. They can still bring that chime but can also cover way much more ground versatility wise

I had a 330 with HG-Pickups bought in 1988 and I had it for 12 years. But if I'd buy a Rick ever again, I'd choose the toasters. That's the true sound!!

A little more gain from that Vox would yield you better results. The sound is too clean to really tell how well those pickups can sound. Open her up and let's hear it that way.

What's crazy is how John Fogerty combined a Gibson PAF with his 325's stock toaster pickups. Not sure how he got around the problem of noise when using double-coil+single-coil in parallel.

My 360 has the high gains and this video confirms I won’t be changing them out. Found the toasters quite brittle and shrill. Then again, going through an AC30 with the treble full up doesn’t bring out a rich tone.

By the way, if you want a real comparison, the Ricks made in the early to mid 60s had 250kA Vol and 500kA Tone pots/5th knob with two .047 400-600v Oil on Paper Caps. The new 330s ship with only 300kA pots for all knobs. D'addario Pure Nickel .10s pair well with it as well.

Been enjoying your clips last few days. Your gear......as a guy(58 now) who's was stubborn enough to get a 325 in summer 1985 @...🤔....$1100ish?? HAD TO HAVE it as I salivated at the rest wanting 330s, 345s, 360s et al. ... Any way....your gear.....yours is what I think of had I WON the lotto. Which you've either succeeded at or your incredibly smart at your occupation. Either way, congrats. Thanks for sharing. In life, some things are visually enjoyable and just a joy to look at. Nice collection! Currently, and perhaps the rest of the way mine are 1993 Gretsch 6120-60 Martin HD-35 2018 Rickenbacker 325C64 2018 Rickenbacker 360/12C63. Like the past as a youthful 19 yr old with big eyes, financially I had no business getting the Ricks in 2018. But I'd sold my others away in years past and couldn't stand the thought of them gone. My 325, a toaster mapleglo 370 and a 1995 381V69 mapleglo. Anyway.....keep the videos coming. ✌️ -Mike in Mich

@@guitargearconnection I swapped out the neck pickup first because it was way too woofy and no mechanical adjustment (or tone cap mod) would take enough of the woof out of it. The gold foil 'pup was the ticket and gave me that jangly sound I was looking for.

Everyone says the H-gains have more bass and mids. That's not the way pickups work. At ~3x the inductance of the Toasters, they simply have stronger output, and a lower Q & resonant freq. The Toasters can sound like the Hi-gains by rolling the tone knob down into a boost pedal, but not visa-versa.

My 1971 360/6 Deluxe, ( in my meme photo) I bought new in the same year, has what I found out as "transitional" hi gain pick ups, not traditional toasters , but more like hi gains but without the buttons on the ends of the pole pieces, I've never measured the ohms, but I don't get that jangly sound to speak of, they are pretty beefy TBH.. It was my regular gigging guitar for years, could play all styles except for high volume rock, got kinda squealy...

I just got a 330FG. At first I was thinking I would swap out the high gains for toasters, but after experimenting with guitar and amp settings I’m gonna hold on to them awhile. I did my first gig with it yesterday and found the HG’s very versatile. Watching your video you definitely hear the classic Ric sound with the toasters. The HGs though are very close.

  • @achodesign

In my opinion the toasters have more chime and soul. With the top boost volume crancked up to 2 o' clock, Tone cut and Highs rolled off, it will roar. The high-gains sound much more generic to me.

Nice A/B. I'm not sure you dialed in the tone fairly for the toasters. I've played toaster that are way fuller with more low end and beef than that. As for the looks, I like the yellow in the burst of the 2023 but I do not like the pure plastic-looking white inlays of the new Ricks. I prefer the mint green-tinted crushed rock inlays of the older generations.
