Great vid, Dave. As a patreon, and a Ric owner, I gotta say you point to some of the Ric quirks. That being said: unlike some of their big brand peers, they have: 1. stayed in business since the 40’s, 2. Never gone bankrupt, 3. Never made a single instrument outside Santa Ana, California, 4. Been family owned since 1958. So to to quote yourself: “they don’t really care “. 😎

They could however take a note from Gibsons and Fender's book and buy an old out of business manufacturer and build official overseas version of their models through that brand. Priced under $600, made in Korea or Indonesia, set necks, laurel fretboards, cheaper hardware, polyurethane finish, single truss rod and output jack, cheap ceramic pickups, all that stuff. As long as it's legal and got the right look, it'll sell like butter

Good afternoon Dave, never commented on here, but figured I would today. Gotta say that I have been playing a Rickenbacker bass since I was 17 years old. A very, very long time ago ! Although they are pretty quirky , they do seem to be able to pre sell EVERY instrument they make. Given the prices they charge that's Impressive to say the least ! They have finally made a fully adjustable bridge for the 4000 series bass ! (It only took 5 decades). For all that they are, or aren't, they do hold their value. Unless the guitar is beat to death you will get back everything you invested in it. The list of players that have used them in the past is extensive, and most of them are highly regarded players. So yeah, their a pain in the ass, but they are a business model to emulate. Plus "Grover Jackson" works there ! ( I currently own over 50 guitars) only one is a "Rick" , April 76 4001 Jet Glo. Wouldn't get rid of it for anything ! Sorry for the long dissertation, stay safe, RR

They sell because we are a bunch of rubes that drool over their brand. I hate the company, but because Paul played one, guys like me gotta have it. (I own 3 Ric basses. @@rodrossi9749 Love my '76 Mapleglo 4001, I just got 4003 truss rods installed because the originals were seized and now the maybe 2 times a year I have to adjust the neck relief it's as easy as any Fender, although you don't have to remove the neck to get to the truss rod, which is a classic Fender design flaw that seems to go unmentioned a lot of the time. I'm not a huge fan of the original bridge like everybody else and their aunt, my factory mute turned to a pile of goo and my G string falls off the saddle sometimes because of how hard I play, but you can still set them up to play well. Considering Chris Squire used the original bridges on all of his Rics, they can't be that bad.

Always enjoy your videos.. glad you're back. I just replaced the two rods on a 1978 4000. Yes, the single pickup model. It only sounds half as bad! lol! The rods were a bear to remove, someone epoxied the aluminum bearing block to the rod ends! I had to cut it in half, and pull the rods out one at a time, as you have to - because they will not come out attached to the block, both at the same time. I, too, a long time ago, machined a 1/4" open end wrench to get in the stupid channel they dig to put two shitty rods in. The rods I removed, are so devoid of anything remotely resembling intrinsic strength, its laughable. The new ones, my client bought from an aftermarket Rick parts maker- are much better. I had to machine a new bearing block from aluminum stock, and it's actually better than the original now. One thing- It's really difficult to find 1/4" truss rod nuts, made of steel, not brass! The bass has the same ultimate issue the bass in your video has. The problem? The 44 year old neck through billet is no longer straight. It has bowed up, like the way a Fender neck develops an 'S' curve. It is like a Martin that needs a neck reset- but not possible.. the entire billet has changed in angle. I had to file the saddles like you did to get the action lower. And it was also all the way down. Bad design. Rickenbacker, by the way, has since gone to a single, double acting rod, and a new bridge design reminiscent of the Hipshot. It's about time, it only took 40 years of Luthiers and repairmen like us bitching about it to make them finally do something. I'm lefty, and I still haven't bought a Rick.. and now, a 4001S the one I would buy, is $2,400.00! I have a Chickenbacker lefty 4005 hollow body. I had to nearly completely rebuild it. That's a whole nother story!

Thank you so much for all of your videos Dave. God knows how many people feel the same way about Rickenbacker's ignorance to these problems. It is absolutely mind boggling that making these basses with ONE truss rod just has not happened yet. I played a brand new Rickenbacker 4003 bass at a Guitar Center about three years ago. It was that walnut model with the maple fretboard and triangle inlays. To my surprise, it was very enticing as the tone, sustain, and playability were excellent. Whoever set that particular one up at the factory put a lot of love and time into it. I can still remember playing and looking at it thinking of your repair videos demonstrating how frustrating these basses are. There are also many online forums about how bad these basses are and how stubborn Rickenbacker's customer service is. Not fair to the customer, buyer, or tech that has to set it up. Buying it was completely out of the question anyways due to an extremely tight budget. Even if I could, I would not have bought it as the evidence has proven well beyond a shadow of doubt. Sorry for the ramble sir, God bless to everyone during these difficult times.

More traditional than functional. Very distinctive tone that I kind of dug, but left a bruise on my rib cage every time I played it. Also, noisy as all hell. Traded for a P-bass back in ‘92.

I like your unbiased opinion on this bass, I’m a fan of the guys who played the Rick but it looks like a maintenance nightmare. One day I will try one but I’m not I’m not in a “Rush” to own a Rick yet.

Looks like you are doing well. Glad to see ya! Dave, I absolutely HATE Ric's. I will NEVER buy anotherone..another one... EVER. Just an unnecessarily complicated pain to do any adjustments and MUCH more expensive than they are worth in my opinion... but thanks for the video. GREAT educational and entertainment value. Take care! P.S: the tone is great for Country gigs... but not mush (not a mistake) else in my opinion.

I have learnt so much from yuo about preventive maintenance I can preform on my instruments and save $. What is the brand/model of capo you use? Most I see available are very tight spring loaded that I'm afraid of damaging a high end finish. Also a special Thanks for introducing me to Solo Musical Instruments.

Had a 1980 Mapleglo. Sold it after 6 months. Even the guy at the music store told me to get a real bass! They look good but couldn't get a usable sound out of it. I was so disappointed. I tried everything and it was a dog. The bridge is a joke and the truss rods are useless. Got a P bass. Never had a problem w it. Simple as that.

Over on Scott's Bass lessons he went over what he thought were the top ten basses of all time. He rated the Fender Precision as number one the Rickenbacker as number two and the fender Jazz as number three. Anyone who puts the Rickenbacker over the Fender Jazz is deranged.

Owned and played many kinds of basses in 45 years but I am mainly a Fender guy and even a few realy good Squiers, not the Affinitys but I have never wanted a Rickenbacker, it is the only bass that when I pick one up and play it it just feels so uncomfortable to play, and I think they sound like shit. I don't know much about recording because when one is played on a recording they do have a distinct sound and sound good. I own plenty of basses but I would not get a Rickenbacker just to have one, to each there own. P.S big Rodger Glover fan but I think he mostly played Fender P's on recording and Rickenbackers sometimes live.

I really want to be able to do my own setups on my 4001, but I'm too afraid that I'll damage the instrument. Or do everything "right", but make it worse off than when I started. And then not be able to fix what I messed up. I need to start learning since my locar guitar guy is getting close to retiring and I can tell he's just "had it" with being a guitar and amp guy for as long as he has. I hate to even bring anything in to him these days. He'll take it and do the BEST job imaginable... but you also leave his work station feeling like you inconvenienced him since I'm not a "working musician" (he gets stuff sent to him UPS from all over - all of it being from active musicians. Many have told me that you'd be amazed who all sends him work, too. The fact that he doesn't tell about it only further reinforces those claims by others)

Even with all their problems, I would still like to have a Rick. But they are just too expensive for what you get. If I have to put some work into an instrument to get it functional, then I am not paying more than 2 or $300 for it. Good luck finding any Rick for that price.
