Yeah. But he doesn’t need to feel too bad about him cloning his daughter. Rick has cloned himself a lot, first with Operation Phoenix, and of course the season 4 premiere when he came back after being a wasp. So in a logical sence, he just split Beth in 2, not much as a (clone in her place) type of thing, cause even Space Beth has all her memories before season 3 episode 9

I believe the reason he didn't want to know which one was the clone was because he both wanted Beth to have a chance to go out into space and do what she wants, but he knows he's going to be with the Beth that stays home, so he wants to love her just like she's the real Beth even if she might not be. He wanted to have his daughter at home, but also for her to be free, so he tried to have his cake and eat it too.

At the same time this is not his real daughter. In the universe of infinite Beths - all Beths are kinda his kid. A clone is nothing more than an artificially made twin. Making the clone Beth just another kid he has.

I know he says he's a bad father, but when Beth gave him the choice he must've thought. "Of course I want my daughter to stay, but I also want her to experience what's out there and live the life she always wanted to." And in truth, what he did is make both of them real.

That's a valid point. But I think what makes him a bad father is that he didn't choose for his daughter to stay, the same daughter he had "abandoned" for years before, the same daughter who had been saying that she requested Rick to make talking knives and indestructable baseball bats just to spend time with him. She was abandoned by her remaining parent for a significant portion of her life. Beth was asking for a human moment in which her father chooses for her to stay, even the way she worded it seemed like an ultimatum thing. She was willing to not go if he wanted her to stay. But Rick is a god, he can do both the letting her stay and letting her go live her life thing. Unfortunately, he did both things half assedly, he didn't know which was his daughter and which was a clone. He couldn't fully commit to loving any of them because they might just be a clone of a daughter who exists in an infinite number of universes he can access. Choosing one thing over the other is what humans have to do unfortunately, and as a parent, you choose what's best for your children, not for yourself. They didn't ask to be born.

I honestly loved this episode's running joke of Jerry just shouting "Hey" instead of doing something. It can be annoying to see him wimp out, but he's unarmed against sci-fi guns, and it established the joke for when he was in the car.

But the clone IS Beth. No one seems to care about Beth from other dimensions but once it's a "clone" people get weird about it. They're both completely real organic Beths with identical memories up to that point. He gave her the ability to do both options at once but since it wasn't done with Portal tech, it's taboo?

Right, but he DIDN'T want to know which is which, because he WOULD know and consider one of them a CLONE instead of Beth. That's the main issue there. If you make a clone you need to base on someone/thing to do it.

i agree i donn't think rick made a bad decision. He wanted to give both beths a sense of individuality and the idea that they both weren't disposable as no one knew which one was the clone.

I think Beth gave rick a sort of ultimatum and he did what he thought was best for Beth and erased his memory because he wouldn't be able to live knowing which one was actuslly his daughter or the clone.

But why? I am unable to comprehend why anyone in or out of the show cared which was which. They're both living, breathing Beth's with all of Beth's memories up to the point of being cloned.

"I always wondered who would win if we ever fought." "Then you were always a bad friend." Just another on the pile for "subtle and/or underrated Rick and Morty lines that go HARD."

"Come on Rick, we need to know who the clone is!" Why does it matter. They're identical people at this point. :P

I mean biologically they are pretty much twins. Clones of each other. They have the same memories until the same point when they split. But obviously the new experiences kinda shaped them into two different people. It doesn't matter which one is a clone, because both are Rick's daughters (or both aren't - considering this isn't his original world). Just one was artificially made.

Literally Jerry’s worst of the worst decision of throwing away that invisibility belt.

my theory, space beth is the clone. one of the things rick said before making the clone is that "she has zero chances of going blade runner"". that means, the clone would not figure out they are a clone. beth "figured out" she was a clone, that means, she's not the clone (space beth was told she was a clone, she didn't come to that realization herself).

Yeah that's the thing , they keep making that point multiple times over multiple plots . it did not matter which reality Rick (and Morty) originally came from . it did not really matter which Jerry they got at the daycare .... it did not matter in which body did Rick jump when destroying the Citadel

That's a fun reaction for multiple reasons . One of them , is that as usual , you love Rick so much , and are so eager to trust everything that he says , and to take it as gospel , that you find yourself flip-flopping every minute he lies . "She's a clone" , "no she is the clone" , "wait no she is the clone" etc :p

“Hey” is my favorite joke from this episode.

I would say he actually isn’t a terrible father. His daughter asked him to make one and decide. And he knows the one thing he created in the world was the best thing he ever did to have the chance to have two of your best “invention” to put in his way of thinking. And I think him ripping the labels off the vats was his subconscious way of making sure he would never really know for sure so that his analytical mind would be able to love them both the same. Also I don’t think the neck “bombs” were bombs at all I think it was the transferring memories to the other one so both would have the same experiences. Because he knew if the “real” one would ask for a clone the “clone” would as well and he would be faced with that same decision the first one asked. It was a very “Rick” way of giving her what she wanted without being too emotional for him. Just my thoughts. Maybe or it’s total bull either way great show and writing.
