Great perfomance. Wonderful Schröder, the solo french horn. Solti always wanted to lure him to Chicago, but Schröder refused. Schröder was one of the best beside Gerd Seifert from the Berlin Philharmonic.

I don't think I've seen Lorin Maazel smile so much during a performance. Of course, this was a televised event, so I guess he was performing to the camera to some extent. Anyway, great performance. Maazel conducted Richard Strauss a lot and this is typical Maazel - executed with precision and brilliance of sound.

Fascinating to see the great Ab Koster playing an Alexander 90 (single B horn) sitting next to a player using an Alexander 97 (five valve single B horn). And, of course, beautifully played!

The symphonic poem repites a theme of 5 notes unendly, witht fast counterpoint of other instrumentos. The structure is a rondo, with scoother parts and others "piu vivace". Those are frevels of an imagined boy. He makes robbery and also other ones. At the end he is caught, justicied, and finally hooked by a rope. ❤

Maazel used a slower tempo overall. For a faster one, perhaps more in tune with the trickster's adventure, mischief, blasphemy, and final downfall, I highly recommend Semyon Bychkov's interpretation of this splendid orchestral gem with the WDR Symphony Orchestra (available on KZread).

Just the first few bars show how Maazel was the fussiest control freak conductor ever. He literally wants to control every note the musicians are playing. The result is stifled, awkward in the tempo relationships of the individual phrases and altogether not organic. Strauss writes “es war einmal” over the first few bars. But we don’t get a magical atmosphere.

Agreed. I enjoy much of Maazel's work, but not this rather forced and stilted interpretation. It's unfortunate because the orchestra performs splendidly.
