These arguments about who's the "better" guitarist all over KZread are, of course, misplaced energy. Jerry and Richard Smith fill fundamentally different ecological niches: Jerry was a creative genius and a multifaceted master entertainer. Richard is a master practitioner of Jerry's music (and others') and a great teacher. I would say both of them are virtuosos. It's often true that a student of certain inspirational artist will surpass that artist in technical prowess, but that does not necessarily make him "better." One example is Stevie Ray and Albert King. Stevie was a thrall of King and went on to surpass him in terms of speed and precision but I doubt he would have ever claimed to be "better" than his hero. That's not a perfect example because Stevie brought tons of creativity himself -- but you get the point. Plato and Aristotle, etc. Jerry never even claimed to be a great guitar player but rather a "guitar thinker." I personally think he was both. Richard is inspirational in his own way and a gift to music.
