Richard Raffan turns a Xmas bell for 4-Ways Project #9
This 4-Ways project is a Xmas ornament - something to hang on a Xmas tree. This bell is essentially a thin natural edge bowl with some small beads on a string - so you see how I turn a thin bowl and small beads. Be sure to watch the other videos:
Tomislav - • Christmas ornaments id...
Sam - • Elegant Sea Urchin Orn...
Mike - • Turn a Candle Ornament...
4-WAYS comprises Sam Angelo, Mike Peace, Richard Raffan, and Tomislav Tomašić who suggested that having a few turners publish their approach to one project on KZread at the same time should be interesting. 4-WAYS publish after noon on the first of each month, US time, which is evening in Europe. For Australasians it’ll be the 2nd. morning of each month. Each video has links to the others.

I am sure you hear it all the time, but... Mr. Raffan, I can't thank you enough for all the time you invest in our community, for the years of inspiration and education you have provided me. I am a turner in my mid-50s, and have been following you and getting my inspiration from you for nearly 30 years now. Thank you! Have a wonderful Christmas! I will be making a few dozen of these for family gifts this week!
We used to say at our turning get togethers "The I.D. should NEVER exceed the O.D." Ha!
What a beautiful piece of turning and watching the skew work was very impressive and interesting!!! Literally the second before you mentioned good eyesight I thought the very same😊. Thanks so much for the knowledge you pass on and document. Always a pleasure to watch you at the wheel😊
Well, comments said it all Richard, awsome work and really creative one 😊
I’ve been reading your material and watching you for more than a decade. This one brought the “cringe factor” up a few notches. It is a pleasure to watch a master. Thank you for teaching us.
An incredible turning of timber is Richard Raffan. He is able to make anything from turning timber. A very talented man is Richard Raffan.
Nails the jam chuck first try! Then sands the clacker bead, doesn't like it, hits it with a skew, waxes it, and parts it off. Amazing skew work!
Richard never ceases to amaze me with his creativity and sensitivity. Another awesome piece! I wish I could someday be half as good as Richard. Not likely, tho. I am already 68.

Nearly 74 with blasted brain cancer. So I'm not able to turn timber now.
❤ Beautiful little Bell 🔔 ❤
Very nice Richard 😊. Sam
Always a pleasure to look and learn
RR may recall BBC radiocomedy "Round the Horne". A lady introduced herself as Edwina Clapper, to which Mr Horne replied " I don't recognise your face, but the name rings a bell". Great project Richard, I'm off to the shed now.
What a beautiful little bell. Thank you so much for all you do for the turning community. Your expertise and willingness to share it with everyone is an amazing gift. I have said this so many times, but everytime I see one of your videos, I learn something new. You are the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you very much!
Creative as usual and cute.
Incredible precision as usual, and a very nice project, ....I must stop holding my breath watching your videos. I'm new to woodturning at 63 and just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill which has inspired and taught me so much
I enjoy these 4-Ways projects (or Gang of Four as I think of it, sorry). It's great to see the different approaches of such an excellent group of craftsmen. Thanks to all.
Very neat Christmas ornament; really liked watching the bell design develop. The thin wall was very enjoyable to watch being turned. Thin walls on this piece and delicate finial on Sam Angelo's piece. Now off to see what Tomislav is going to do. Mike Peace's candle was the first one I watched. This was a great choice for the November 4 ways project.
I have enjoyed all these 4 ways ornaments now, Thanks to all for posting.
That's really beautiful nice gift idea thanks well done .
That bell will never tarnish with that sock treatment. Happy Holidays! Thank-you, sir.
Amazing skew chisel work. And also very nice camera angles. And a beautiful piece of work. ❤
Very beautiful Richard. You have certainly done this piece proud. Well done. Thank you for sharing. Remember, when the wood goes around the face shield goes down.🙂🙂
Nicely done as always and a pleasure to watch you turn Richard 👍🙂
Richard, asI have commented before, watching you is like magic- it all seems so easy! Thank you.
Very nice work, I like the idea of using the light, I would never of thought of cutting the wood off the log like that! Thanks for the suggestion
Such mastery and confidence with such a delicate bell. I have no idea when I'd be ready to try something like this.

Try it. “It’s only a lump of wood.”You might surprise yourself. Richard has been inspiring (and surprising)me since the 1990s, with videos, books and in person.
Gorgeous little bell ornament Richard.
Thank you for sharing with us. To watch is much better than to read how to. It's the design that is so important and the dimensions .You have all these going on

What is the little light you've set down under the project? Thank you!
Beautiful. Just so beautiful and delicate! Thank you!
What a joy to be able to learn from you Richard! Thank you.
Wonderfully thin, exceptional detail and truly beautiful. I really enjoyed your thin Ash bowl turning video too. Very well done. Carry on!
Nice work! Love the detail.
Excellent as always, thanks
Lovely stuff!
Beautiful work Richard! 👏
Nicely done, love the thin shell.
Thank you for your expert guidance and inspiration. A great project!
Great little xmas project, I'll have to give one or more these a try. Thanks for sharing Richard, always pick up little tidbits from you.
Very nice work Richard! That's a beautiful piece! Thank you for sharing. Take care, Dave
Incredible work. This is a piece of wood 😍😍
Amazing job , It sure looks nice and a good use of a small piece wood .
Beautiful bell Mr. Raffan. Thank you for this demo. Was glad to see that even a master turner like yourself can be subject to the catch. Have a Great Christmas and a Great New Year....
I'm 72 and started turning 2 years ago and I am envious and hopeful at the same time. I will keep trying because of you and Mike Peace and Ronald Kanne along with many others. Thank you for pushing me forward. My best friend lives in Penarth Wales and I was wondering what are the most common woods available to the everyday wood turner in the UK.
Any ideas why there was a catch/runback near the end? I will sometimes get a similar looking catch with my skew and I can’t figure out why.
It looked like there was a word robust on your tool. Rest, is that the brand of lathe you are using?

The lathe is an Australian Vicmarc VL150 which comes with two very good rests, but in some situations I prefer Robust rests which are manufactured in Wisconsin by Robust Tools who, like Vicmarc, manufacture a range of lathes.
Was this wood wet or dry when it was turned? Thank you for the video!

Cut about six months previously.
Wonderful work Richard. You make it look so easy and I know it isn’t that easy for me. Do you know what wood that was - it transilluminates very well? Thanks for sharing this. Nikkos

Hello Richard, those shark jaws are 48 or 55mm in diameter? Thank you.

I think these are the 48mm jaws. I have both.
