In 1975, Moshe Dayan was invited to speak at the University of Florida while I was a graduate student. We organized a demonstration to protest inviting him by the Student Government. In the weeks preceding his appearance, I was interviewed by the local police and many agents in civilian clothes to ask me if we or anyone I knew could represent a physical threat to his person. I assured them not, that we were going to make a lot of noise during his speech, but that if we were attacked by the thugs of the JDL, we made definite plans to give them a drubbing. The demonstration went on without any violent outbreak, interrupting Dayan’s speech multiple times. But then the following week I had to face the wrath of some of my professors and department chairman. They did all they could to make obtaining my doctorate as difficult as possible putting many obstacles, some serious and some infantile, in my way. It is of interest to note that Moshe Dayan proved to be perhaps one of the most honest of the leaders of Israel. In his memoirs that he asked his daughter to wait 15 years after his death to make public, he tells all the shenanigans they perpetrated, including the constant harassing of Syria like shelling Syrian farmers, to provoke the 67 war to take the Golan Heights they were coveting since the partition.
