Richard Manuel (Levon & The Hawks) - Georgia On My Mind (LIVE!)

Richard Manuel and The Hawks, which would later become the rock group called "The Band", Preforming Georgia On My Mind in Port Dover 1964. This is beyond rare, and amazing to hear "The Band" in there beginnings. Richard gives the best performance i ever heard.
Richard Manuel - Vocal
Robbie Robertson - Guitar
Levon Helm - Drums
Rick Danko - Bass
Garth Hudson - Organ
Jerry Perfound - Saxophone

I could listen to Richard Manual sing all day long and not get tired of him His voice was fresh and strong here and its a great soulful version..He was the heart & soul of The Band and is missed by many.....R.I.P.

oh my goodness. I'm in the thick of Levon's book now and this just illustrates so clearly his praise of Richard's "goodness" and soulfulness--it's all there in his singing. He was a shooting star, one of too many casualties of that wild era.

Richard Manuel never, as far as I know, sang it better than here. The years take their toll, especially on somebody with quite that much soul.

Richard Manuel was the best R&B vocalist I've ever heard…certainly the best white one. His voice is up there with Ray and Marvin, IMHO. Thanks for posting.

I agree. He's up there with Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, The Gregg Allman and, Ray Charles. He has such a soulful voice. There is a lot of pain in his voice. All four of the singers I mentioned had had a lot of suffering in their lives. Marvin said that to sing from your soul you have to know suffering in your life. I don't know too much about Richard Manuel except he had a sad ending. I just hope most of his life he didn't suffer.

I need to second this. I read about it in Levon's book. Love to hear Richard in his prime...but' OH do I ever love his falsetto! IMO there was never a band better than The Band!

The genius of Hoagy Carmichael, made heavenly by Richard’s beautiful and soulful vocals. The arrangement doesn’t have all the changes right, but the pace and feeling is perfectly entrancing. ❤️❤️

What a voice! One of my favorite lines from Levon's book, This Wheels in Fire, is when Dylan told Keith Richards that they were rhe best band in the world and Keith says " What about us". MISS THE BOYS!

+portvuelapsley Didn't he respond by saying something like the Stones are the greatest philosophers but these guys are the greatest band? I can't remember, read that book many years ago. It is a great one though, amazing how connected The Band was. Only thing that compared in terms of the Forrest Gump-ness within the music industry was the recent and awesome Rick James bio.

from this pre big pink era an awesome cd. is "ronnie hawkins and the hawks - the roulette years", 2 discs the majority is released stuff w/ ronnie doing all lead vocals, his stuff. But the most interesting tracks are from a day ronnie was off and the 5 did studio tracks that were much different and not meant for release called the sexy ways session. levon does the vocals.

The only version of Georgia I'd heard Richard doing was the SNL one...the way Levon raved about his singing voice in the book kept surprising me, but now I see where he was coming from...

7/12/64 some interesting dates. Ray C was turning 30 9/60 when he released his version. Richard was 21 the day of this recording and 33 in 1976.

@tdawg1294 Yes, I have all their albums, but Richard did a lot of "living" in those years before they ever recorded an album. I can only imagine what his voice was like in those early days, and luckily this 1964 recording is a glimpse. By the early 70s he was already using vocal tricks to cover up for his fading voice. The soul was still there even if the voice couldn't always make it work, no doubts about that.

@TheConneman I was probably at this show, Pop Ivey used to book them on Sunday nights, if I remember correctly! Any info you can pass along, or songs, I love to get. Thanks for posting this, Rick was a special talent and you were lucky if you got to hear him on stage. But then they were all true musicians, not just noise makers.
