Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast - with Adam Buxton #34

You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore
Support our Kickstarter to bring back AIOTM (aiotm) here - www.gofasterstripe.com/kickstarter
Rich is back for an unprecedented 5th series of this stupid podcast, worried that he might have the same effect on this week's guest as he did with Stephen Merchant. But it's unlikely as it's a welcome return for the man with the pink bicycle, Adam Buxton.
What is the ethical age for a dog to be before you have sex with it? How much does the cartoon The Snowman inform us about the career of David Bowie? Are we ready to consider the mortality of our fathers? Plus a (prearranged?) call from Buxton junior.
The videos of these shows are now available for FREE on iTunes and KZread and vimeo. If you'd like to make a donation to keep these services and this show running then give a one-off or monthly sum of your choice at gofasterstripe.com/badges. Or come and see Richard on tour richardherring.com/gigs

They discuss how the Rolf Harris chat from the previous interview now seems odd in light of then recent developments, and then Adam says with admiration, "Graham Linehan knows many creative techniques and that's why he's remained successful." 😬

SkagWinesack It's so silly, responding to a request you made of someone else two years ago, but yes and yes, great choices. And they both happened and they were both great. Especially Armando, who is one of my all time faves on RHLSTP (RHLSTP), up there with Rich's faves, David Mitchell and Dr Buckules.

@@TulseLuper In all seriousness, I would say GL has Internet/social media addiction. Even back when his politics were still acceptably liberal, his behaviour online could be concerning. There’s actually a moment or two on the Father Ted DVD commentaries that suggest his approach to Twitter was never healthy. He brags about scouring it for hours at a time, looking for even mildly critical comments just so he can block people, as if that represented some kind of moral crusade. I’m not quite sure Arthur Mathews knew what he was on about there.

I’m sure lots of fellow pedants have corrected you on The Snowman intro since this was recorded - that the ‘82 original intro was Raymond Briggs himself and the ‘83 Bowie one was added for the US version. Was that one ever shown here - I can’t remember that far back?

Because I listen to lots of Richard Herring and latterly Adam Buxton, as well as gobs of UK panel shows, interviews and podcasts, I often hear people talking about taking the train. For example, Adam often mentions his London/Norwich trips. While I know that train travel is a much more common way to get around the country than it is where I live (Australia, where train travel is mostly intra-city & metropolitan) I had no idea how much it costs. So I went to find out...and wow! Talk about fucking extortionate! The single price from London to Norwich, according to the places I looked, is over 50 of your British quiddlingtons! That's $85. A single journey from my hometown Brisbane to Gympie, roughly the same distance, is $19.50 or £11.47. I know that UK trains have more plush conveniences but even so. That is fucking mad.

Joe Fangers The National train system was a victim of Thatcherite privatisation in the 90’s. Irregardless of political views, I’ve never heard anyone argue that the current system is anything but a shambles. Different bus and rail companies operate seemingly independently with no obvious overall plan (except maybe within London). It gets very expensive when you have to pay multiple companies for each leg of your trip. I’ve never heard any public transport here referred to as plush - not like in Italy or Germany where you have high-speed rail, really comfortable seats with legroom and food & complementary alcohol, etc at a fraction of the price (apparently both countries own chunks of UK railways...hmm...).

It's sad that someone as talented as Adam Buxton, whose 'Bug' was not only fantastic but also a comparatively inexpensive programme to produce is not renewed for another series. Surely there is a spot for Bug somewhere. 焗死了? I wish I'd been in Austin when A-Bux was there. I was in Houston that year and missed SXSW. It would have been funny (for me at least) to bump into Doc Buckles on S Congress or Zilker Park with a Lorra Lorra Blinda Data!

My favorite thing Adam Buxton has done was on Armando Iannucci's Time Trumpet. The yob kids sketch where he dressed up and tried to blend in with a gang of yobo youth. "That's blate, blet, William Peter Blatty that is."

Was always curious about this, was/is Stephen Merchant genuinely actually properly upset with the podcast?! Why? What? There is scarcely any detail about it online, found it amusing personally! Not at Steves expense either. Do you think in a few years time Steven Merchant will look back with fondness, wistful abandon in his eyes as he gazes into the sky and sighs to himself 'ahh, Herring-Gate. Those were the glory days. '?

Am I really going to have to make the effort of driving to Wolverhampton on Friday? If I can get a babysitter then I'll bring the little lady too (not the child). Hold on, last time I saw Herring in Wolverhampton (Hitler Moustache) it was at the Civic's little brother, the Wulfrun. Now I see a relegation to The Slade Rooms? Or is this actually a bigger venue?
