Richard Dawkins Takes Down Anti-Science Republicans

Prominent atheist Richard Dawkins lamented over the weekend that Republican presidential candidates were still denying that evolution was a fact.
“This fills me with despair,” Dawkins explained to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria. “This is not something you believe in or not...

+nitelite78 He is infamous and makes a lot of noise, but he has hurt people in understanding science. Nothing in science is a fact. Nothing in science is proven. As Richard Feynman said, religion is a culture of faith, science is a culture of doubt. It is that doubt that drives scientist like myself in doing more work. We are never completely sure on anything. Building on that some more Dawkins tries to connect science and religion and use science to attempt to squash religion. They are completely separate issues. Not related. Religion is faith based. You can be religious and scientific at the same time. Several of my colleagues are. What I recognize is that Dawkins, in the 80s was ok, but since the 90s has been an embarrassment to science.

It's a sound theory but calling it fact is wrong

+whyamimrpink78 Gravity comes from a warp in spacetime, caused by what we know as matter. The moon for example is actually moving in a straight line through space, but that straight line has been warped by the mass of the earth. This warp of space time can be seen in gravitational lensing, where a mass bends light around it's gravity field. This has all been tested and proven by Einstein's theory of general relativity.

Scientific theories are not called "theories" because they are humble. Not at all. In mathematics, it's called a theorem. Like Pythagoras's theorem of right-angled triangles. In Biology we just use the word Theory to explain a set of observed proven facts. The word "theory" that JUST HAPPENS to also have a 2nd different meaning in ordinary English which means....a hunch, or idea.

I had voracious arguments with ignorant individuals whom claim evolution is merely a imbedded theory, not fact. This assertion is silly and usually inanely backed by inane evidence and constricts the very basic foundation of the definition of science: which is based of hypothesis, theories based and imbedded through research, observation, collectivity. Science does a great job at finding all evidence possible for scientific observation and research, but to call a fact a theory and assert that its a false theory as well is ridiculous especially in our day and age research is at the touch of our figures! To not educate yourself on an array of beneficial evidence online, in books, on documentaries and then make counter-assertions with inane assertions is anti-scientific and should not be taken with seriously...

I am merely agreeing with Richard and, while he doesn't come out and say it directly, assert that the scientific community is partly to blame (which Lawrence Krauss has stated)... How is that redundant? Even the definition of 'scientific theory' somewhat conflicts with the way theoretical is used in 'theoretical' physics. That is merely just another example which further supports my assertion.

The way I was taught to understand a "theory" is that it is something that is just as powerful as law, but merely can't be observed. My teacher gave the example that the LAW of Gravity is a LAW because any of us can drop a pencil and observe gravity take effect. The Big Bang Theory(not the show) however, is only a theory because we have an overwhelming amount of evidence, a lot of times even MORE than which we can provide for laws, that can back up this event. The only reason it isn't law is because we didn't actually observe it directly. A lot of people say that a theory is a theory, not a law, because we can still add to it or change. It is true that a theory can be changed but so can a law, we can always add things. A law and a theory can always have things added to them or even have their entire names changed but they are both FACT and even if we add on, or change something, it's only in the process of what we already KNOW is happening. A theory is just as, if not stronger, than a law because it is actively being looked into and articulated. To say a theory is the same thing as a hypothesis, is just so wrong. There is something called the God hypothesis though so they might want to look into that. So yeah, that's what I was taught at least lol

Theory stands ABOVE 'fact' in levels of intellectual integrity, because a sound theory explains WHY the facts are what they are. A sound theory will also suggest new facts, which, if subsequently discovered to be true... mean that the theory itself is true, and, in its turn, becomes a matter of fact. This predictive process has happened hundreds of times in the case of Evolution. That is why we can be so CERTAIN it is true AND factual.

  • @justjack3177

I take acceptation to kyle saying "there is bad science and there is good science". There is no such thing as 'bad science'! If it is proven wrong it is still science and leads scientists in another direction. Einsteins last 'theory' was proven wrong but that is the beauty of science, because it was Einstein scientists assumed it was worth checking into which led to another 'hypothesis' being evaluated. All I am saying is that science simply boils down to the process of elimination and Kyle should avoid using the term 'bad science' as it is a favorite amongst creatards and fundies.

The United States National Academy of Sciences defines scientific theories as follows: "The formal scientific definition of theory is quite different from the everyday meaning of the word. It refers to a comprehensive explanation of some aspect of nature that is supported by a vast body of evidence. Many scientific theories are so well established that no new evidence is likely to alter them substantially. For example, no new evidence will demonstrate that the Earth does not orbit around the sun (heliocentric theory), or that living things are not made of cells (cell theory), that matter is not composed of atoms, or that the surface of the Earth is not divided into solid plates that have moved over geological timescales (the theory of plate tectonics)...One of the most useful properties of scientific theories is that they can be used to make predictions about natural events or phenomena that have not yet been observed." From the American Association for the Advancement of Science: "A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not "guesses" but reliable accounts of the real world. The theory of biological evolution is more than "just a theory." It is as factual an explanation of the universe as the atomic theory of matter or the germ theory of disease. Our understanding of gravity is still a work in progress. But the phenomenon of gravity, like evolution, is an accepted fact."

To be clear, the word "fact" was not yet used pre-1970 but the department head said to our class in no uncertain terms that while he did not *believe * in evolution ... nevertheless he *accepted * the evidence as *valid * ... until overturned by a PREPONDERANCE of evidence that REFUTES it. . . This is what basic science is all about. And I am grateful for having the opportunity to get a quality education. And I would do it all over again. Too many still believe ignorance is a virtue. An email I sent to Oxford administration: ‘I am writing to express my outrage at Richard Dawkins’ recent statements regarding the youth Ahmed Mohamed. In the context of discussing Mr. Mohamed, a boy falsely accused of bringing a bomb into his school, Professor Dawkins made a deliberately ambiguous reference to a small child forced to commit an atrocity. Although Professor Dawkins may insist that he was not comparing Ahmed Mohamed to the small child victimized by Daesh, the original remark was cryptic enough to encourage such an interpretation. It is plain that Richard Dawkins was intending for people to make this interpretation, despite any of his denials to the contrary. Making matters worse, he added a comment later indicating that the child victimized by Daesh is guilty and deserves criticism. It should be apparent that a small child, evidently roughly 10 years of age, forced to commit a beheading is himself a victim. The awfulness of Richard Dawkins’ behavior is remarkably rich, for in attacking Ahmed Mohamed he is attacking a young person with a clear interest in technology. This sort of criticism coming from a well-established scientist is especially sadistic. Adding insult to injury, Professor Dawkins questions the IQ of those who criticize him. I can only respond by quoting Ludwig Wittgenstein (who may have been quoting someone else, in turn): “What matters is the heart. Any old turnip will do for a head.”’
