Love or admire ? He is one of the most charismatic men without a doubt.I did notice that as well from other interviews and I guess he really loved working with him ..I saw an interview with a famous reporter and it wsa very akward ,and I guess he just touched on it in this interview where it is tough if you dont like the person

Right? I love the way he looks at Richard with complete adoration in this interview. I saw other interviews they did together for _The Double_ and it's always obvious how much he likes and admires him (and finds him funny!).

British comedians are on another level. No script written jokes, just pure comedy.

The interviewer is actually great. He got a lot out of them when compared to other interviews. He made them feel somewhat comfortable and actually challenged some of their responses

Jesse totally has a man-crush on Richard and his demeanor is indicative of such. He's intimidated by Richard's intellect and expository abilities. The man [Ayoade] is so gracefully articulate and at his age, it will be remarkable to watch his career blossom.

Both Richard and Jesse seem to appreciate how thoughtful the interviewer's questions are.

Once again Ayoade kills it! The man's a master!

I can't think of a more articulate and naturally humorous human being, That nasally voice and luxuriant hair send tingles to the nether regions of every woman on the planet.

There was one guy that slagged him offcalling him ugly ,he was quickly attacked by others and myself ,like you say as I said a few minutes ago..A very charmiong man ..But I also feel I would not like to be on the wrong side of him

I figured out what's going on with Jesses articulation! He has an obvious crush on Richard and is so consumed in listening to him that whenever he's asked anything he is befuddled and can't find his pace. When he had more time to talk he picked himself up. This is also visible in another interviev with them where Jesse was just giggling flantically all the time.* *This is a joke, please don't take it seriously.

I do believe everyone has a crush on Richard, how could you not? I've been watching him for years, he's so, so funny. I love his nerd act. He's also great as the gadget man, I love the way he can make Noel Fielding, laugh on game shows. Their all really awesome, I love the British. They don't have a problem with political correctness.

Things have changed politically.

Absolutely adore this interview - Ayoade at his wittiest. Think the interviewer did a great job with his questions and with dealing with Ayoade. A lesser interviewer could have taken offence or been awkward but this guy was happy to challenge him. He also did a nice job giving both Ayoade and Eisenberg time to speak.

I actually thought Richard dropped out of his witty persona quite often here. He so rarely talks about his process at all. But still quite funny and enjoyable yes

My screen time is leading me to everything Ayoade just now. I feel as if my intellect is being elevated just by listening to him being interviewed. What an extraordinary amusing man. He is also being drawn into interviews that appreciate this level of thinking.

Great interview! Must get Ayoade on the show again in the future!

Richard Ayoade is a great director i hope he comes back to the directors chair again as this was his last film.

Holy Toledo, this was an incredible interview. I love this interviewer, he is just bringing out the best in Richard and Jesse, wow, thank you!!

This was a great interview. I gotta go back and watch the double again. I remember seeing a picture of it and being intrigued because it was Jesse Eisenberg, but at the same time wondering why I had not heard about it before seeing the picture. I then watched it and, to me, it was one of the most note-worthy films that year. It was so different... I think I watched The Zero Theorem around the same time, which was also extremely different compared to any other films. Loved both of them because of how unique they were. It was refreshing. I wish Ayoade and Eisenberg decides to work together again some day :)

Yes, I think introverts perform for themselves and what others gain from it is irrelevant to us. I certainly entertain myself (often laugh with or at myself as I feel the situation demands), act to my own standards, dress to my own standards etc

It takes confidence to do that though, that all introverts might not necessarily have. U have to rlly not give af no matter how ppl react. That doesn’t come naturally to ppl I don’t think, cause we’re socialised into having manners, being polite, etc.

Great interview, Ayoade is a national treasure and I love Eisenberg in many roles and as an actor. Can't wait to see where these blokes go in the future.

After first watching The Double, I had no clue what happened, but I remember thinking "Wow, someone really put a lot of care into that."

Richard Ayoade does not say 'uhh' or 'umm' when he's talking which I find impressive. Until someone mentioned to me that he says 'you know' alot. *glass breaks* Now I keep hearing that word from him eventhough he does not necessarily use it a lot when he talks.

@@samaraisnt Nah, "y'know" is also a filler. I say it a lot and it rarely means anything. Also, there's nothing wrong with filler words and I have no idea why everyone's so bothered by them. It's no different to a pause in which to gather your thoughts.

Had to stop this after 4 1/2 minutes to actually watch the film!

I've seen interviews with Jessein which he didn't use so many filler "likes". It's weird. However, he 's still very intelligent and articulate. Richard is great. I can't wait to see the movie.

Piccadilly Circus: where we all congregate to sing Mary Poppins. I about died 😂 But this is the most INTERESTING and enlightening interview I've seen of Ayoade yet

Wow, I had no idea Ayoade had anything to do with the film... It was already on my radar because I love Eisenberg, but I'll definitely have to watch it soon. Speaking of Jesse... personally I think he's a brilliant actor, I can see why people wouldn't really like him but I find him incredibly engaging, charismatic and watchable. It's really interesting to see how awkward and ineloquent he can be - he's obviously highly intelligent and insightful, but he seems to have difficulty getting the words out. I totally get what he meant about liking the prescribed nature of acting; he wouldn't end up saying 'like' as often, for one thing. And I mean no disrespect there - most of us might like to think we're good speakers, but... we're not.

I know this was a year ago, but Submarine as well. I love RA from The IT Crowd. This is the longest Ive seen him be serious. The interviewer did a good job considering the two's disposition and inert humility.

"I always wanted to be J. Mascis" nearly shat myself. How many more reasons do I need to love Richard Ayoade? Dinosaur Jr. is one of my favorite bands of all time.

Unlinke some I loved Jesse's awkwardness because I feel like this al the time. If I were to do such an interview I would be like totally tripping over like every word as well. Also the super charismatic, ararticulate perfect celebrity gets really boring really fast and it's not all that relatable to most people.

Fantastic interview. Very insightful interviewer, clearly did his research and challenged them more than the usual junket fare. The only thing that kept bugging me was the mic position. Clearly the guest would want to face the host, so that’s where the mic should be. The mic was in the front though, so richard would end up being off mic whenever he tried to speak to the host.

I`d love to watch Jesse Eisenberg trying to pick up Letterman at a bar, they should make a movie about that , lol.

It would've been great to hear Richard and Jesse without the interviewer constantly interrupting them and feeding them answers through long-winded, leading questions where he had clearly decided for them what they felt already.

Eisenberg edits his expressions rapidly & perhaps heavily, to the extent whereby he holds back the finished thought process, not expressing it verbally as a completed form, couched in prescribed formal terms. Ayoade edits himself 'on the hoof' too, quite heavily but he redresses and rephrases the context & we hear him take apart his edits- expressed as humour. The two of them perpetually disassociate themselves from certainty, preferring ambiguity and allusive indirectness. Dostoevsky's persona & to some extent his probable bi-polarity, coloured his expressions similarly. Eisenberg & Ayoade are both Dostoevsky. That or the gold particles in this vodka are not truly tiny fairies. Anyone for a game of cards?

An interesting way to refract the difference between British and American comedy. Stephen Fry has touched on this.

I just watched a clip of Richard doing stand-up in 2003 and didn't laugh once in four minutes but when he is humble I find him more interesting. I missed the boat on his humor and can't figure why. He would be the only reason I watch this movie, though.

Mitch Weiner That clip is the only thing I've seen with him where he wasn't funny. I guess he was trying, there, whereas lately, he's funny because he is not, just being himself.

I have to say that I like Jesse Eisenberg more, after this interview, simply because he clearly enjoys Richard Ayoade at least as much as I do...

The interviewer just wasn't on their wave length and just didn't get it. Richard is right. Comedy can be in everything. You can still get serious stuff done whilst using humour at all times. Life is too short to be serious. The only thing I take seriously is happiness.

I agree with you. I think the interviewer buys into the idea given us by psychology - that people use humor as a defensive tactic - and wasn’t on board with Richard’s response to his questions about comedy. Pity. He missed out.

The interviewer didn't understand he was dealing with a modern day Oscar Wilde here n he just wasn't quick witted enough to reciprocate any kind of decent banter, n didn't understand irony enough to be on the same page. I mean it's not his fault. He's just not wired that way, but Interviewers are renowned to try n eek out a serious side to Richard, n I think it's almost become a game for him to evade, which makes him even funner. But loved it when Richard said the worst thing you can think is that there's a direct correlation between merit n success. So true.

@@PomegranateStaindGrn I think it's possible that Richard does use humour as deflection but as he says it's just not important; it's irrelevant. He, the interviewer, also implies that Jesse uses acting as an escape - another pop psychology perspective; happily Jesse, tho not entirely coherent, managed to convey that it is far more complex for him than that. The question is, did the interviewer do this deliberately in order to invoke more of a response? Because that's what happened

i've never known anyone to have so closely my views and be able to articulate them; on top of that the interviewer says he thinks most people dont understand and that he thinks he might be confused. im dismayed.

Flo Antonia I agree, altho in fairness to richard he does expand on his feelings about allen in his appearance on adam buxton’s podcast. He ofc acknowledges the allegations and discusses the difficulty between separating the artist and their work etc. I just wish he would acknowledge it, even briefly whenever he mentions his adoration of his work.

I found this an interesting reference bcos if I'm a fan of anyone it would be Ayoade and definitely don't see myself as a Woody fan at all BUT I do love the atmosphere of Allen films - the way he shoots things like it's real life. (Whedon did this for Firefly too - it's a great approach)

I personally was only able to see the bleakness in the film, I haven't read the book he's referring to, so that could be why I couldn't find the humour in it? Or my sense of humour is wired a bit differently to Richards.

Say what you will about Jian, but he was one hell of an interviewer. Not that that excuses anything. Flawed people can do great things as well.

Believe it or not, both Richard and Jesse are INTP. Richard has managed better than most INTP to turn it outward and actually express himself, using his sarcastic wit and self-deprecation.

Eisenberg has a veritable problem constructing sentences and having his ideas straight . The repartee would have been much more interesting and rich.
