Still gives me chills to this day. The "USA!! . . .USA!!" chant in the closing seconds, the raw emotion of the players, the emotion at home. Just amazing . . . so glad I was alive to see it happen.

First hockey game I ever watched. 14 years old at the time. One of the few times it was more than a sporting event. Incredible moment in time for sure.

Thank you Rich! I went back and listened to some of your interviews with Al Michaels, what great memories. I was a 21 year old kid when this happened and not a hockey fan at all (SF Bay Area), but this brought out some pride that I'll never forget! GO USA! Cheers Rich!

Probably the greatest moment in sports history. What the Olympics should be about... uniting our country. Jesse Owen's winning Gold in front of Hitler might be up there too among the greatest moments

One of those I remember where I was when I heard...I was at baseball practice (pitchers/catchers)in Anaheim, CA (yes February) junior year H.S. Someone I can't remember maybe it was my coach mentioned that we (USA) beat the USSR. It was a big deal (USA rallying cry) because of the hostage situation in Iran as well. The greatest upset ever, imo.

Also my dad's birthday. I was 17. I stood by our betamax VCR while the rest of the family sat chatting at the dining table, pausing the tape at every commercial. Still have the tape. I knew the result because I'd been listening to short-wave radio from Canada. The U.S. media blackout was amazing. We need another event like this. USA! USA! USA!

We needed this reminder as a positive sports event and parade that brought this country together and no need to worry about getting shot at a championship parade back then. It unified the country like never before. I don't like the Kansas City Chiefs, but what happened at the parade was sad. Our hearts go out to the people of Kansas City. This goes to show how far from grace this country has fallen, especially after knowing how much more divided our country is right now.

God bless you Rich no doubt that this is the greatest American sporting victory of all time, I was 13 when that happened. Ken morrow grew up in Davison MI right down the road from me in Clio, we all knew he was gonna be good Rich, I love my wolverines Rich but you are Right,,,,, nothing compares to this nothing, the world stage and those players made it happen. I knew by the way the US was playing they had an excellent chance. Love your show Rich, Go Blue

Fetisov’s journey after that moment is another thing no one would have guessed at that time - from fighting against a dangerous government for players’ freedoms abroad to now being one of the sanctioned Russian duma. Nuts.

Depending on the Finland/USA and Sweden/USSR results two days later, the USA was not even assured of winning a medal of any kind at the '80 Olympics. If Finland blows out the US and Sweden and the USSR had tied, due to the round-robin format the Americans would have left Lake Placid without a medal as crazy as that sounds now.

You had to be alive during that time. So similar to where our Country is at now. No faith in the Government. Inflation, Gas Prices, scandals, it all seems so similar. There was no reason to be patriotic. Then THIS happened! This IS the GREATEST Country in the World because of the heart of its people, as shown in this sporting event. There is no stronger people in the world.

The USA game vs Finland game was not the finals. The format was a round robin style. If the US has lost the Soviets would of gotten the gold.

Not sure it would have been the soviets or Finland who I don't think had a loss yet the US had a tie so a loss would have at best left us with a bronze which would have definitely impacted the importance of the win

The 72 series was a more important moment in hockey history. Paul Henderson scoring 3 game winning goals to salvage a Canadian win, in 3 consecutive games against a Soviet opponent. Do it once is cool, do it three games in a row, epic.

Paul Henderson was a player on the fringes, on a defensive line with Bobby Clarke and Ron Ellis. And when it was on the line, he shone.

The Summit Series was an important part of hockey history and what Henderson did, especially in game 8 to win it late, was incredible and I don't think any individual player will ever match that again. But the 72 Canadian team was a group of future Hall of Famers in their prime and basically every top Canadian player except Hull was on the roster. The US was college kids and minor pros a year or two out of college. Only about half the roster ended up making the NHL. The Soviets were unstoppable and hadn't lost an Olympic game in 12 years and claimed gold four straight times. The US got blown out 10-3 by the Soviets just before the Olympics. It was the Cold War. The US just boycotted the Summer Games. Everything was stacked against the US and they somehow won. We don't win an 8 game series against the Soviets. We only needed to win once and we did. It's the most important game in American sports history. It was a miracle and i don't think can be compared to the Summit Series in any way. The background and skill set was just completely different.
