Want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, built a rice huller based on your design and it works great, used mild steel plates 4mm thickness instead of the wooden sheets and make a slight change in the sprocket arrangement to reduce the number of sprockets . Powered it by a i/2 HP motor. Thank you once again

Brill-iant Engineering! This is really cool. There are so few resources for backyard granary to be found online. This looks like something that can fiddled with to process a number of different grains. I do barley and hard red winter wheat. Thank you so much for this video.

this is a great video Dan, by the way. I think there should be more machines like that for a house use for people to be able to eat healthier grains.

Thank you very much sir! I cultivated rice last year but i forgot to find a way to clean the rice (yeah i'm stupid XD). A rice huller automatic machine costs like 8.000$ here in Brazil (something like 2.500 US$) now with two stones like these and a little portion of luck i can finally do it

Make sure you look at the centrifugal machine I developed. We did a lot of different grains with it and it is easier to build. The only problem was that I couldn't get a bike to get the impeller turning at 3,000 rpm. It works with a most any small motor from a 1/4hp dc to a 5 hp gas one.

Shri Vrindavannath asked about lentils, so I bought 2 pounds of lentil seeds. The impact huller de-hulled about 30% which isn't good enough. The pinch roller system shown in this video doesn't de-hull any of the lentils. But, I could remove the hull (husk) by hand with 2 sheets of 100 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper. The husk came off very quickly. I've ordered some sandpaper with an adhesive backing which I'll put on the rollers. This might do the trick. If it works the sandpaper will only come in contact with the husk of the lentils. I'm trying this instead of using a stone.

i don't think so because it is to soft. Check out one of the videos on the website which shows most of the grains we have processed.

Would this work to hull Buckwheat as is or would it need to be modified with sandpaper on the rollers?

we tried buckwheat with the pinch rollers and it doesn't work. The impact huller will work but very difficult.

Hi Dan, I am sorry for repeating my comment from below, but not sure if you can see it. Thank you for your reply, if oats are too soft for this kind of machine, do you have any ideas for a DIY oat huller? I tried blender, food processor, coffee grinder - I get crashed oats and hulls, all difficult to separate. I had 2 small pieces of rubber and it seemed to work better... minimal grain damage, but it takes ages! I would appreciate any suggestions. thanks

i don't think so, I'm working on a centrifugal now that might work but it will be powered with a small motor.

Stoltz Manufactures the rollers for boat trailers, I bought them from Eastern Marine, Take a look at the huller that has the wooden disks covered with a urethane sheet of 90 durometer,

the grain needs to be hard like rice, look at the video of the centrifugal huller, we did a number of different grains with it, but not lentils

Brill Engineering thank for the answer. By the centrifugal you mean the impact huller? I saw the videos and saw that you got Indian huller, there is many videos of lentil hullers, can you say if they are same system? I haven't found any that shows thow the system works or how is the internal parts. I really need to get, buy or build something to de-hull red lentils and mung beans. I'd be very thankful if you can help me out with this just by telling me if that is same system of impact or centrifugal they are using. Thanks a lot for the work you are already doing by sharing all this info.

the lentil de-hullers appear to use rough stone with a set gap so neither of these would for lentils.

Oats are very difficult, I believe the industrial processors first heat (cook) the oats prior to removing the husks. There is a no hull oat variety.

I no longer build these. The rollers are no longer made by Soltz. One option is to cover wooden rollers with polyurethane sheet material 90 durometer

We only build a few of these a year for individuals who don't want to build one themselves. We have sent rollers to India and we've shipped a few to locations in the USA and then they were combined with other equipment to lower the shipping cost. This unit would most likely cost $250-$300 US to ship and we build them as of now 4-28-2017 for $370 US.
