Rhythm Roulette: Gensu Dean | Mass Appeal

Ойын-сауық

For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, we linked with Gensu Dean.
Known by many as The Grand Incredible, Gensu Dean is currently one of hip hop's best kept secrets. Mello Music Group's very own stopped by LES' Good Records to be blindfolded, to select three records at random, and to give us an intimate look into his creative process by cranking out a few beats.
Currently based in Texas, Dean has become known for his vintage SP1200 as well as his massive 7000+ piece vinyl collection to go along with it. In this episode we see the producer taking us through his process, even having to work though a bit of country music.

Absolutely immaculate! Love how he didn't complain about any of the records before he listened to em.. ANYTHING could have some flippable ish! He even made the point of saying "I'm not gonna call it whack, just wasn't for me" ..what a dude!

First off it seems to me that he's in the minority of producers that actually randomly walk through the store blindfolded instead of standing in front of a particular genre and THEN putting on the blindfold. Then he got in there and went to work like he had an hour block of studio time. Didn't appear to use pre-loaded samples, everything seemed to come from the selected vinyl. On top of that, he opted out of the easy route by using a simple sound from the funk album as opposed to using it as a foundation for either track. Love his creative process. This is the type of work that I can really appreciate. Not to talk down on other artists' methods of production, but this minimalist approach is still dope to me. No computer, just an MPC, amp, monitors, vinyl, and turntable. #Respect bro.

Hey this guy didn't just walk over to the Soul and Jazz section of the store, then blind fold himself, pluck a record and act like it's "random". This guy went through store and was vulnerable to any genre. OLD SKOOL attitude, up for the challenge but he didn't rig himself to look good. Absolute props to this guy, MPC for life, YYYEAAAAAHHHHHHH BBBBBOOOOIIII!!!!!!!!!!

yeah, walking over to or close to the soul and jazz sections before the blindfold have forever been the loophole thats been exploited/used time and time again. yeah they didn't know what record they were gonna get in terms of the album or artist itself, but they knew which genre those records belonged to because soul and jazz in general are safe to sample for hip hop beatmakers/producers. they aren't up for stepping outside of that and ending up with shit like, i don't know, the residents or the stooges or mercyful fate or ryuichi sakamoto scores. just anything truly random and challenge themselves to sample from records outside of jazz/soul.

But does it really matter if they choose a genre they feel comfortable with? Random is random no matter the genre. Air quoting as if choosing without looking in a preferred genre, is not random. Some would say going to soundtracks /scores is cheating. Some would say other genres. Whatever they want to pull from man.

Anthony Geonetta watch most of these as commented..if you have music ability or played a instrument then already got good start..remember samples from recorded artists is set in the traditional structure in a sense made in musical notation and melody..so you can be basic and just loop the sample or break it down and rebuild..just practice
