Gosh that bought back some happy memories for me! Back in the 70's I learned hos to do all those dances and could probably still remember how to do them! Sadly there are no local rinks any more. Such a fun sport though! Thanks for the happy memories:-)

2:42 😂😂😂 I’ve said for years cheap rentals are just enough to make someone get their kicks and not skate again for a while. Skating got fun when I got a custom pair with quality bearings and wheels.

Originally released by Paramount in October 1944, this was one of the 200 "Grantland Rice Sportlight" shorts- along with other pre-1950 live-action shorts and Paramount's 1929-1950 cartoon library (including the Fleischer productions)- that were sold to U.M.& M. for TV distribution in November 1955 for over three and a half million dollars. As part of the deal, the title cards had to be refilmed to eliminate the Paramount logos......and they did it on all the 35mm negatives. 😠

It’s such a shame that skating lost favors with the American public. I stopped going because of gang and drug activity at the rinks along with the violence they brought. It really was good, inexpensive fun.

Not true. It depends on where you live in the US. Skating is ridiculously popular in cities like Atlanta, GA.

@@jerseygirl82 they are actually correct there’s only a handful of cities where it’s still popular. If you are melanin like me then you know that majority of our skin skating rinks are closed due to violence. I’m from Wilmington Delaware we had the most popular rink in DE PA NJ area and ours was closed down because of people from Philly coming to Delaware to shoot up our skating rink. The next popular one was in New Jersey is to was closed down for violence as well as two in the city of Philadelphia. Philly in New Jersey now have skating rinks that are booming again but they were closed for years.

This roller skating short film highlighted how popular roller skating was many decades ago. It is a shame that roller skating is not nearly as popular as it used to be although lately due to the COVID-19 pandemic roller skating regained some popularity. I especially like the roller dancing and free style artistic roller skating in this film. However, this film highlighted the lack of people of colour at the mostly white owned roller rinks, who were not allowed in most white owned roller rinks in the USA during that time period due to racism and discrimination, which is very sad.

I wish that roller skating hasn’t taken a bad fall and has gone by the wayside like other sports. It was a place of wonder ans so much fun when I was growing up. The guy who owned the rink taught other skills as well and I learned how to be a rink guard and good rink etiquette. I got involved with roller derby and tried to teach good rink skills when I worked as a rink guard myself. The kids that got dropped off by parents were from a whole different generation that I grew up in. Disrespectful, rink rats who cared only about themselves. They hated me because I had no problem kicking them off

Why is it every time I watch one of these the counter gets in the way of what is trying to be seen on the screen what is the purpose of that it wasn't there in the original video and it's not impressive to look at

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZread users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Even a really tiny contribution can make a difference.
