Rhythm of War Review: Is Sanderson getting worse?

In this video, taken from a longer podcast (linked below), my sister and I discuss Brandon Sanderson's latest book, Rhythm of War. If it seems desirable, we can plan a further deep-dive in the future; but for now we just sort of summarized our general thoughts on Sanderson, his strengths and weaknesses, and why for us the Stormlight archives is becoming too bloated, losing its character-resonance, and several other things. Enjoy!

Kaladin and Lift not teaming up for the Urithuru siege plot seems like a real missed opportunity

Funny, I thought oathrbinger could have been the best of not for its glaring pacing issues especially in regard to bridge 4 and the whole shadesmar plot Rhythm was a true return to form for me. An explosive beginning, setting up character motivations, unveiling the true plot, and then slowly inching towards a phenomenal ending. Pacing wise, plot wise, and character wise, it is the stronger novel. Oathrbinger has better moments I agree, but its whole weighs less than the sum of its parts. And I'm sorry, I will always prefers the inferior better paced book over the superior worse paced one. Pacing issues usually means that author has his priorities mixed, but in new exactly where Sanderson was going in every scene in Rhythm whereas oathbringer had me keep looking ti see how many pages were left for the current PART (not chapter) that I was reading.

Completely agree with your critique. Personally, I could not get past book 1. Thought everything in it was serviceable enough, but it felt ultimately empty to me.

Hah maybe you are right! I did check it out several years ago from the library and began it, but then started traveling again and never kept it up. I'm not sure it grabbed me as much as I was hoping but I was younger so maybe I've learned more now and would appreciate more :)

I read book 1 and was mesmerized. Read book 2 and hung in there. But I didn’t finish book 3. Making a detailed world is one thing, but it’s like he lacks an editor. He desperately needs someone to help him prune superfluous material so the best parts shine. I’m done with him for now.

@Hap Hapablap ok you clearly didn’t grasp the point about opinions I just made. Your opinion is not fact and neither is mine. Book preference is subjective. If you can’t grasp that concept maybe you’re the deluded one bud

Yeah that's been something like my experience as well. Oddly enough, I read book II first because Mason Bell found it in his garage and gave it to me. I enjoyed it so much that I went back to read book I (of course) and found it somewhat slow or dragging, especially with all the bits about Shallan in that scholar city. Could be because I read it in the wrong order and already knew the backstory, or could be just a personal difference but Book II has still always been my favorite, especially the climax. He's so good at climaxes, tying all the threads together, timing, dramatic moments . . . . but yes when you wait thousands and thousands of pages for a climax that in the end just takes you on to another dragging book . . . . it's all too bloated, tedious, not sure. I think you're right, he needs some sort of editor. I suppose it's great he writes it all from the heart, with such dedication. Probably he sees how all the threads tie together and he feels like every single one is vital. That's always my problem, being overdetailed as I am. But in the end if the world doesn't like it as much, could it be a sign that it's an inferior manner of storytelling? Probably . . . .

Oathbringer by far is the best in the series. Just for Dalinar’s arc. Rhythm of War is okay. Really I loved it for Venli and the climax with Navani

I love most of Sanderson and view his world building magic building and writing as great but I think he should stop using to many tropes for every character, and for rhythm of ear I thought the kaladin in urithiru story dragged on a bit

Good stories are character driven. They drive the plot, not the other way around.

Is it too much to ask that fantasy authors focus on only just 1 character? Write 3 books about Kal, i don't care about almost anyone else. Also I hate to say it but almost every female character in fantasy is boring. I had to start skipping shallans parts half way through the first book. I fully read through WoT, I'm never making that mistake again.
