Rhynchostylis Retusa : Semi Hydro Project Orchid Stage 1 - Initial Potting

Hi Everyone, it's Annabel, welcome back to my channel!
In today's video, we're going to be potting my new Rhynchostylis retusa into semi-hydro, so we can follow it's progress as it adapts to the new potting method. In doing this I want to record if and how orchid roots are able to adapt to semi-hydro, as the results I have been getting with Vandacous orchids adapting to this method, without root loss, contradicts some popular theories, and I'm interested in following this up.
If you want to see an update on my Rhynchostylis giganteas after a couple of years in semi hydro, check out the video below:

    You have inspired me to try SH. I'm gonna use LECA and lave rock with a couple of wicks as well. Fingers crossed! 🤞

    One day I will have a go at your potting system. It still seems quite radical to me , but you seem to have great success.

    I took a tiny devision of Retusa with just two leaves and two broken roots from my friend's garden, where it is kept semi wild, in July. Kept it in moss. First one of the old roots reactivated it's growth and then new roots started to grow as well. A new leaf followed shortly. Super happy! I am sure yours will do great; it seems retusas are not too fussy 😃

    Thank you for this video, I shall surely follow your journey. Mine was from the same seller, but with all roots jammed in a rather small pot. Crossing fingers for the new set-up according to your recommendations (media, heating mat). No worries - I will not start a fuzz of I mess it up 😊

    Let me know how it goes with yours, would be great to hear your experience with potting it and if you think the heat mat speeds up new roots! If it doesn't work it would still be good to hear, then we can get a better idea if it's something specific to my environment or if it works well in yours too! 😀 But I really hope it does work and your orchid doesn't skip a beat! 😀

    @@TheOrchidRoom Dear Annabel, I am a little careful as to not be too optimistic... but these couple of days in your recommended setup/ medium/ heat mat were enough for a tiny step forward: my sorry plant is producing happy sap. That's a first ever and cannot be a bad omen 🤗

    @@tinakauder6605 This is exciting! I'm really happy it seems to like it! 😀 I know it's too early to tell and it could still change, but I'm like you and tend to get excited at early stages. I've put quite a few rhynchostylis hybrids into this setup now and so far none have lost roots and tend to start making happy sap like yours. I hope yours starts making new roots soon also! Please do keep me updated! I can't remember if I said but I also use maxicrop seaweed extract at 10ml/2Litres or around 30ppm at every watering with the nutrient mix and I swear it helps with new root growth in my semi hydro setups also. Thanks for letting me know your initial results! 😀

    Thanks. I have Rh. retusa mounted. I had it from flask and now I think its more than 5 year old. I have a few flask or Rhynchostylis and other alliances that I was wondering to use your system for deflasking them. Do you think using LECA alone for deflasked seedlings would work?

  • @TheOrchidRoom

    @TheOrchidRoom

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi, I think LECA would be a bit too dry at the top for deflasked seedlings in my environment, but it depends very much on how LECA and semi hydro behaves in your environment. If you don't have issues with a dry top layer or can spray the top layer regularly when new roots emerge it could work.

    @@TheOrchidRoom I was wondering to keep them under the growing dome which hopefully would allow the humidity to wick to the top.

    Hi Annabel, Could you do this with all types of vandas type orchids or are there some you wouldn’t try this with ?

  • @TheOrchidRoom

    @TheOrchidRoom

    All my vandas are potted in this setup following my vanda update vid 😄 I can't recommend it yet as it's only been a few months- initial results are positive. Rhynchostylis and Aerides are safer bets as they're known for loving more moisture and potting them is more common.

    The Orchid Room Thanks Annabel 😊I only recently found your channel and I’m making my way through all your videos. I’ll keep a look out for your vanda updates as I’m keen to see the results. I’ve made something similar for my vandas. But they are mostly seedlings and I’m not sure my set up would work for a large vanda . It’s only been a month and a half and so far it’s looking good. Looking forward to your future updates ☺️

    the old stem will not rot in the container?

  • @TheOrchidRoom

    @TheOrchidRoom

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's not buried very deep and the top layer will stay quite dry. Rotting is unlikely, but the other option would have been to remove that portion of the stem, which would have been unwise since there are potentially still active root nodes present in it.
