    This is extremely valid. Judo is far more explosive than BJJ but you could see both parties using their grappling style to their fullest extent and benefitting from the respective pros and cons; grappling training in general is usually a 70% during sparring anyway. She won the throw to the ground from a Judo perspective, and he basically came out on top from the BJJ groundwork perspective where he steadily gained small bits of control to which she had to disengage using grip fighting to bring the fight back up on their feet where she knew she has a slight advantage vs him on the ground. Stay out of the BJJ spiderweb on the ground and keep trying to slam them/gain the takedown. Good strategy. Also, people need to remember that BJJ has a different tactic system, where it can be extremely beneficial to succeed the points in terms of the standing work in order to gain the advantage on the ground almost immediately in order to submit your opponent.

    This makes me wonder what the women's judo gold looked like at the same time. Everyone wants to talk shit now cause she lost but if she hadn't gotten that idiot coach who told her to throw hands, she'd still be phenomenal. She may even still have lost but she wouldn't have embarrassed herself. She's a legitimate warrior of a judoka. Absolutely world class by skill and definition.

    Nah if anything it's sorta overrated. People assume any sort of grappling style makes you dangerous in MMA but in reality there are tiers in grappling. Judo is not top tier for MMA . Sorry but for every ronda there's 5 failed judoka who didn't do much in MMA. Compare the list of mma champs with BJJ and wrestling backgrounds... Its not even close. Plus size and strength matter even more in Judo because of the push pull thing. There was a bbc documentary where a 5'6" 57kg 3rd Dan Judoka, who was an international competitor, was showing an ex male 6'3" rugby player basic judo. They had some randori and the 57kg judoka could do nothing against the rugby guy. At one point the rugby guy even managed to take her down by using a leg grab take down which was not technically legal but he still put her down. In any other circumstance the judo player woulda been in big trouble. Eventually the rugby guy eased off and basically stopped during randori and let the judoka throw him for the sake of the doc. I've seen similar situations in Judo clubs in the past. Big strong beginners pushing around much smaller experienced judoka. Judo is a good form of jacket wrestling, great exercise if you stay injury free... But its not this supreme terrufying system some judoka or bjj guys who got thrown by a 5thkyu one time make it out to be.

People don't understand how difficult it is to perform the technique she did vs an opponent that much heavier than you. Judoka tend to love getting the advantage over their BJJ counterparts from their explosive manner which the BJJ is not so much used to. But it's normally not long lived due to their sneaky nature on the ground vs Judoka

Read it carefully - Ronda is Olympic level judo player and this video is of them pretty much doing judo - now imagine your average blue belt of similar weight to her having a randori session with Ronda - how do you think will stand up part go for them(as that is what we are talking about - stand up portion of this "roll" which looks more like judo randori. I am a huge fan of both of them, and i think Ronda has a pretty good chance of winning in a grappling match. You can say she's overrated, but you'd be wrong. She has all this hype about her because she is a skilled Judoka and fighter. (Not dissing Bj, just defending Ronda.)

    if she gets that grip and you don't have BJ Penn's experience, you're going airborne, and landing so hard that the fight will be over. Judo is for this reason better suited to quickly end a streetfight. Like wrestling, too. Oms hard throw on tar and fight leaves the opponent's body togetjer with air. But I like (and do) BJJ still more.

    I believe the original source was on Sherdog, but a student attending there claimed that Guilherme and Rafael were sparring with Penn (and doing very well) before he went up against Rousey. I'm not going to do a search on the exact source because I'm basically not interested enough to bother. Let's just say I don't really care about the outcome, so there's really no motivation for me to fabricate it. If that's not good enough, then I'm sorry, but that's too bad.

    @@humann5682 I’m a BJJ practitioner but anyone can see the virtues of having a great Judo/wrestling standup. All competitions begin standing. These forms determine whether a fight remains standing or goes to the ground. We recently had a Judoka teach basic framing takedowns without taking to much damage. Most MMA champions have base of wrestling/Judo/Sambo. As a BJJ practioner evolution is good.

    The fact that smaller female judo champion can takedown and control a larger and stronger male BJJ world champion, just goes to show how much more superior judo is to bjj. Edit: If this match went like this, just imagine what would happen if the roles were reversed?

  • @Loneshdo

    @Loneshdo

    Do you think BJ was going all out here? This is a friendly roll they aren't trying to kill eachother. Also, the "superiority" of one art over another heavily depends on the ruleset. In IBJJF rules, bjj is superior because a takedown is only worth 2 points, plus the opponent can simply pull guard to avoid this in the first place.

    Judo and Jujitsu come from the same stem, sadly though, it is documented in actual history that a war between judo and jujitsu schools once took place...in Japan. The competition was a 10 vs 10, only 1 Jujitsuka survived while the other 9 were from judo schools. This is why Japan chose Judo to be the "Police Department's" main art. Jujitsu then fell into obscurity and stayed hidden from public, training only a few people. Howeve,r jujitsu was already popular int he West thanks to Bartitsu- a hybrid art mixing Jujitsu, Boxing, Fencing, Wrestling and Savate. -It then died into obscurity after the training center was closed after the Jujitsu master sin it left to start their own school. Jujitsu was always known but when younger judo came up, it took offense, tried to beat it but lost. Jujitsu was then survived by Maeda who brought it to Brazil when he migrated there. It was there the real evolution of BJJ happened, mixing with Capoeira and other arts not seen int he west or east, it then grew under the tutelage of the first Gracie where it flourishes to the level it reached tot his day. So, for people to claim Judo can't hold a candle to Jujitsu would be grossly mistaken, the only problem, is Judo has been watered down to a sport that prohibits shoulders locks, touching the legs and choking without the gi...something I always hated because it killed the real Judo Jigoro Kano created, the one that actually worked. The only thing keeping judokas alive today with their art is the way they train...they train like athletes and constantly train for endurance (getting throw around), which is why they are tough. But technique wise- Judo today is very limited.

    Misha al Ahmad Askar > You're all off on this one but you're still the biggest idiot. Judo was named way after that so called 10 vs 10 and Judo was always Jujitsu and was only named Judo to difficerate it from the common jujitsu schools. Judo in its beginning was a whole bunch of jujitsu schools with the best techniques... while the other jujitsu schools were doing their particular jujitsu. BJJ is basically just judo when you look at the Kosen these guys were doing. Judo did get watered down and that's when the Gracies jumped on the marketing and turned what already existed into a big money making commodity it is today. I would rather learn Catch Wrestling just to keep it western but there's nothing wrong with Judo or BJJ. Until we see what happens on the street between these two, I really don't care which is better because to me, if a Judoka were to throw a BJJ guy on the street or pavement... it'll be all over for that BJJ guy.

    Jujitsu the way it seems to be practiced is to fight on the ground flat on your back and try and to submit the other person. In judo the goal is to not avoid getting thrown and to throw and in some cases it is followed by a pinning and submission technique. Jujitsu practitioners will go on the ground voluntarily and they don’t want to stay on their feet. Sambo to me is the best of all worlds in the practical everyday sense.
