Rhodesian "Cougar" early MRAP with 36 shotgun barrels fixed around the vehicle demonstrated in 1978

Ғылым және технология

0:00 One of several types of mine-resistant vehicles indigenously designed built in Rhodesia since the early 1970s, the Cougar features a characteristic V-shaped hull designed to deflect mine blasts as well as easily replaceable front and rear wheel assemblies that were located away from the hull in order to decrease blast proximity to the crew if one of the wheels triggered a mine. It was also fitted with a soft top in order to prevent overpressure should there be a blast inside the hull.
0:26 To defend against ambushes, the vehicle is fitted with 36 electrically fired shotgun barrels with nine each front, rear, left and right, installed in the manner of a volley gun. Each barrel is reported to be loaded with 250 steel subprojectiles and the effect of the firing can be seen in the latter part of the footage with the left side barrels discharged towards a farm building.

This was one of many interesting anti-ambush ideas that Rhodesian engineers developed to counter local insurgents. Not sure if this idea ever went into service, but, they did use Claymore-like devices attached to various points, on their vehicles, like the Americans did in Vietnam, grenade dischargers, using pull-string activated, old .303 rifles, to throw grenades in various directions (similar to the S-Mine dischargers on early German Tiger I's), and a twin, AK-47 set up, on the back of a Landrover, that was electrically fired by the driver.

Thanks for the further explanation in the description, because at first I wasn't sure what I was witnessing. I thought the shotguns were some how rigged to detonate mines, which seemed terribly inefficient. As I understand it, they recently began employing a large species of African rats to detect leftover mines for subsequent disarming.

Rhodesia and Portugal were fighting the good war back then. It's really bizarre when you notice that your enemies are foreign guerrilla and terrorist movements supported by neocolonialist nations and an unholy coalition of US and USSR.

Ah yes, history isn't nuanced or anything. Always full of obvious bad guy and good guy countries. Not like they are an intricate result of the decisions of thousands of powerful people (and the occasional popular movement), reacting with imperfect information to hundreds of circumstances. Nope, easy world, easy history.
