Rhod Gilbert's Story | Head and Neck Cancer | Stand Up To Cancer

“I literally left as a patron and returned as a patient.” When comedian Rhod Gilbert was in Cuba on a fundraising trek for Velindre Cancer Centre, he noticed a lump appear on his neck. He was later diagnosed with head and neck cancer.
Rhod shared his story with the nation for the National Comedy Awards for Stand Up To Cancer on Friday 17 February. Watch below as he shares his experience of cancer, and the progress he’s made.

I immediately fell in love with his comedy and stage energy. I just now discovered this news. Mr. Gilbert...I will pray for your recovery and for your trip to Moracco. Thank you Mr. Gilbert, for being you.

I didn't know . I'm glad you had good care Rhod . My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer stage 4 (no he never smoked ) , that was 9 years ago ...at the time they were giving him 6-9 months to live . But with the new treatments , he is still here with a pretty good quality of life (No bottle of Oxygen needed) ....So yes , science are doing an amazing job and if you have someone you know with cancer , please try to help research for cancer , because it could be you needed them sooner than you think .

TQ for your post. My wife was diagnosed with the same...LCS4... Like you I was terrified for her, she didnt smoke or crink and was active.... Her postive energy along with her medication has turned her terminal diagnosis to a diagnosis of "Hang On A mInute Here She Is Still In The Fight" She started her chemo on Monday 8th of Jan. Surgery was never an option but neither was Chemo. Chemo could be started after her body started to reject the Tagrisso. But Not anymore,, Its 3 days after her 1st Chemo and she is flying it. Her PET scan showed clear, Her bloods are almost back to normal, (Not quite there Yet) but I feel sure her positive mental attitude will get her over the line.. Best of all is that she is for all to see , kicking cancers ass. I cannot tell how much you rpost has meant to me. Thank You for lifting my hopes..

I know this video is a month old but I felt I must leave a comment. Velindre Cancer Centre, as it is now, was also my "alma mater". In 1982, a persistent cough turned out to be a Thymoma. After a failed operation, I was "passed" to Velindre. Chemo and radiotherapy was pretty brutal, in those days, but the consultants, therapists and nursing staff were all brilliant and got me through it. I've been in remission (I never say cured) for 40 years, now, living a normal life. I can assure you that any donation is going to a very good cause.

I can relate to this, two years ago I too had a lump come up on my neck which turned out to be cancerous. Two operations plus chemotherapy/radiotherapy plus a PEG Tube in my stomach later I am still here to tell the tale, this is all thanks to the medical team consisting of Consultants, Speech and Language Therapists, Dieticians and not forgetting the amazing MacMillan Nurses. I still meet up with the Consultants on a regular basis and every so often MacMillan arrange an evening at their centre at our local hospital where you meet up with other patients who have all suffered with some sort of Head and Neck Cancer. Thank you all and thank you NHS ❤!!!!!!

I discovered 8 Out of 10 Cats, somehow, on KZread, then found him and have followed him on Taskmaster and everything else since then. He seems like such a great guy. I think I learned of his cancer around the same time I found out what happened to Sean Locke (it wouldn't have been known in the U.S.) and it just stabbed me. It's so sad. I'm fully in belief and awe of the honesty and character of this incredible man. It's not his first life battle and he still comes out punching with humour. The shame is the distrust I feel towards charity 'Organisations', who with no doubt have chosen a wonderful ambassador on this occasion. I would prefer to donate to personal/individual "Go Fund Me" fundraisers, though. From BLM to Health matters, Charities need to clean their act up & be seen as transparent & honest as this man. Stop eating away the donations on lining the pockets of administrational board members. It is no better than grifting if you purport to "Give" to charity if you are actually making a "Living" out of charity by scamming the true hearts of charity that would honestly give their own shirt.

LEIGH, ARE YOU AWARE THAT MAMMOGRAPHS ARE THE MAJOR CAUSE OF THE BREAST CANCER EPIDEMIC WE ARE SEEING TODAY. LET ME EXPLAIN IT IN LAYMENS TERMS. LETS SAY I TAKE THE CYLINDER HEAD OFF MY SMALL BLOCK FORD AND PLACED IT ON A WOMEN'S BREAST WHICH SIMULATES THE PRESSURE THEY PUT ON THE WOMEN'S BREAST DURING A MAMMOGRAM. THE PRESSURE FROM THE WEIGHT OF THAT CYLINDER HEAD IS COMPRESSING THE CELLS TO THE POINT WHERE THEY ARE READY TO RUPTURE AND BURST. THEN I TAKE THE CATHODE RAY TUBE FROM A MICROWAVE OVEN SIMULATING THE RADIATION THEY EXPOSE THE BREAST TOO. AND BOMBARD THE BREAST UNDER THIS PRESSURE WITH RADIATION. WHERE NOW THOSE CELLS THAT ARE READY TO RUPTURE AND BURST ARE EXPLODING AND FRYING LIKE EGGS FROM THE RADIATION THEY ARE BEING EXPOSED TO. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING DURING A MAMMOGRAM. THOSE NORMAL CELLS THAT ARE DAMAGED BY THIS PROCEDURE. LATER ON BECOME CANCER BECAUSE THE RADIATION MUTATED THEM AND THEY COME BACK WITH A VENGENCE.

I’m on number 3, but at 70 I’m cool. The story tho is I called an old friend of mine a few years back, after not talking for a couple years. Dino’s his name..l big huge character. First thing he says is “Michael Douglas saved my life!” Which of course got my attention, so I said “huh?” And he replied “I’d had a sore throat for a couple months, couldn’t get rid of it, thought I had a bad cold or something. Then I turn on the TV, and there’s Micheal Douglas talking about how he’d had a longstanding sore throat and thought it was just a bad cold. Then he went to a doctor, who had some tests done, turned out he had late stage throat cancer. Luckily they caught it at all and after some aggressive treatments he was in remission. So, I went hmmm, and went to the doctor. Turns out I had the same thing, and they said if I’d have waited even days longer I’d be dead. And here I am, in remission! “Michael Douglas’s saved my life!” 😂🎉❤

I can’t count the times Rhod has brought me back from crippling depression. He’ll always be the modest healer and brother I wish I had. Love you Champ ❤️🦋✨

If a comedian can take you out of depression, you never had depression to begin with.
