Rhinoceros Iguana, The Best Pet Lizard?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The rhinoceros iguana (Cyclura cornuta) is one of the coolest lizards in the world. In many ways they are better pets than their cousin the green iguana. But is the rhino iguana the best pet reptile for you?

My wife and her sister grew up with a pair of adult green iguanas. There father said that they were very protective of his daughters especially if they started crying. Apparently he couldn't even get close without getting tail whipped if they were crying. So I figured I'd share that tidbit since we were on the iguana topic.

Although a lot of work, these are some of the best guys ever. About 25 years ago, I worked at a pet store that had a full grown male. He shredded two of my fingers when I was taking the water bowl out of his cage. He bit down so hard that his teeth went through my fingernails. It took about 15 years for the scars to finally fade. There were even scars under my nails! But there was blood everywhere, even splattered on the glass of the tank he was in. I left a blood trail from his cage to the bathroom (about 50 feet), I also got extremely ill within 24 hours (salmonella). I handle large lizards regularly, but these guys scare the hell out of me.

I know it's impossible to know, but do you think a lot of your nervousness came from it being a big UNFAMILIAR lizard? Kind of how I am around unknown dogs, but I think if you got to know that specific lizard you'd be cautious but much less afraid everytime it even looked at you. Great content as always though, keep up the amazing work.

Clint! First of all, loved your video as I always do. I really enjoy watching your best pet features in general, you always have such great information to offer when it comes to choosing the pet that's right for you. I had a thought just now and figured I'd ask: Would it be possible to do a "Blood Python, Best Pet Snake" video in the future? I think these snakes are absolutely beautiful and amazing and have been considering adding one to my collection for awhile but am between the blood python or a Central American Boa. I think it would be so awesome to get your take on these pythons, I want to hear everything you have to say about them!!!

Beautiful animal. I agree with you on greens, while as a beginner over 20 years ago I had unusually good results, especially with a full grown stub tailed adult rescue who had full roam of my apartment and I think just appreciated the care, babies and juvies can be a handful. This video is the first time I have even considered getting an Iguana again other than a Cuban Rock Iguana. SO Clint, when are you going to feature a Sailfin Dragon?? I would also love to see a video on the Blue Tego. I understand they are an Argentine mix that grow much smaller? With the Argentine blood I am curious of their temperament. Had I known about Tegus 25 years ago when I could pick a young adult up for $75 they would have been my first choice over Savannahs and Greens, both of which I had extraordinary results with, my Savannah having a very similar temperament, I definitely would have gone the Argentine Tegu route. Thanks for all you do to educate the public; your service to others and reptiles is truly invaluable!

The Rhino Iguana is by far my favorite animal and I reaserch them a lot (even though I won't get one until after college). I love big animals with a passion, big dogs, big birds, big snakes, and especially big lizards. It doesn't help I love lizards in general, my baby is a bearded dragon I get her out everyday and I've become her glorified pillow and climbing thing. I seriously can't exaggerate how much I love Rhino Iguanas, they're a lizard, huge, and both badass but cute.

Hey Clint, this isn’t really related but have you done a guide on bio active desert terrariums? I’m going to set one up for two ackie monitors and wanted to see how you’d go about doing the background for one. I was just gonna do gorilla glue and a bunch of sand but I’d definitely be interested in seeing what you’d possibly do instead!

For that... I would renovate my outdoor patio and pool area with several trees and a rock ledge... and bars over the screen because those claws would rip straight through standard screens like tissue. I live in Florida by the way, so temp and humidity wouldn't be an issue except in Jan or Feb.
