    Great content! I was introduced to SubD today and then was also thinking about how I could do all the large and detailed things I need in one format. Seeing that there's really no need to get hung up on it, use SubD for large and go back to modeling details in Nurbs.

    where i get stuck is that i want to make a complex shape from parts that are 1 part subD and 1 part Nurb surfaces... can't seem to mix them together properly (good enough to 3D print)

    build them so that they overlap, then copy the subd and keep it for later. convert the original to nurbs, and trim and blend to connect them.

    Hello, thanks for the video. Are the surfaces we made with SubD suitable for production? We can make G1-2-3 connections between surfaces in NURBS, how does this happen in SubD? For example, can a seat drawn entirely with SubD be produced?

  • @Rhinoceros3d

    @Rhinoceros3d

    subd is g2 everywhere except star points which are g1. the conversion from subd to nurbs is 1-1 so that continuity is translated exactly from subd to nurbs. As long as the nurbs result of that conversion is suitable for your needs those surfaces will machine or build just fine from a printer or cnc.

  • @Rhinoceros3d

    You can extract the control polygon of a subd and export that as an obj. But we do not have selectable LOD’s as of yet. It’s been discussed, and we are working on how that fits into our subd paradigm.

    It would be nice if rhino had something like a history reference. So you can go back to your subd and change stuff and switch back to last edit where everything is nurbs again. I know it might lead to conflicts. But thats also the case in programs like inventor. Right now when you convert to nurbs and you need to make some big shape changes its hard. You usually ditch all nurb edits and restart over. That sucks. It must be possible to have a reference history system in which the system can go back in history to change stuff. identify conflicts/issues and so on.

    Yep, that type of parametric association has benefits, but rhino is not parametric and unless we let grasshopper into the conversation that won’t change anytime soon. I talk about this often, make sure you save a copy of your subd to a layer before you convert to nurbs.

    Hello, Is there a problem with surface continuity when SubD and NURBS are used together?

  • @Rhinoceros3d

    @Rhinoceros3d

    10 ай бұрын

    how are you planning on using them together? if you convert subd to nurbs, no issue at all, you can simply matchsrf to get continuity you want. currently there is no way to match a subd to a nurbs surface, however there is internal work going on in this area for inclusion in a later release.

    I have to give the designs we made with SubD to the engineers later because they do the mechanical design. Will it be a problem for them after converting to NURBS ? (They work in STEP format) Thank you for your answers @@Rhinoceros3d
