Do not repeat the experiments shown in this video!
Hi everyone! Today I would like to tell you about such a refractory metal as rhenium. Without it, there would not be high octane petrol and modern internal combustion engines. In the periodic table of chemical elements, rhenium belongs to group 7 and is located on the bottom next tungsten. It is so for a reason. Rhenium is one of the least abundant metals in earth’s crust. It is truly a very rare and precious metal. Because of being so rare, rhenium was discovered only in 1925 by three German scientists who studied columbite. Today this metal is extracted as a by-product in molybdenum mining from such a mineral as molybdenite. Pure ammonium perrhenate, that metallic rhenium is extracted from, is obtained as a result of refining and concentration of the ore. The main product used for producing rhenium is rhenium powder which is later baked or melted into small drops. Drops of this metal shine very well because of being highly resistant to oxidation by oxygen in the air. Besides, the density of rhenium is just one percent smaller than that of osmium - the densest metal on Earth. That is why such a small drop weighs a whole gramm and costs whopping 15 euros. When this drop is compared to one gram of lead, the difference in size becomes evident. Besides being high-density, this metal also has a high melting point which is just 236 Celsius degrees smaller than that of tungsten. This metal is the second most refractory metal. If a drop of rhenium is heated until red-hot with a powerful gas burner, you will see the drop of this metal start oxidizing at high temperatures.

Greetings Sir! One thing that impressed me is how useful it would be as a substitute for platinum as a jewelry metal but at a much lower price. (250$ per Troy ounce vs. over 900$ for platinum. Rhenium has very nearly the same density as platinum and is likewise highly resistant to corrosion. It is ieven more refractory than platinum second only to tungsten among the metals. Although it is technically not a platinum group metal it has all the properties of such metals and with its lustrous silvery color and immunity to tarnish it would make a fine and more affordable jewelry metal. When annealed it becomes quite ductile and malleable and could be easily worked into form. Of course it's extreme melting point nakes it difficult to cast but there are high tech ways of getting around that. Anyway, I guess Jewelers are very Conservative and like most Conservative people are sometimes lack imagination. I hope some Avant garde jewelry tries this idea out!

You may know this question, I once had a carburetor on a automobile engine. I purchased a screen metal that was mounted under the carburetor. As the fuel went through the screen , is reacted as a catalyst with this metal.this improved the fuel mileage, and made the car run better. What is this ,did it really work? And why can’t we buy this anymore if it functions as designed?
