Do not repeat the experiments shown in this video!
Hi everyone! Today I would like to tell you about such a refractory metal as rhenium. Without it, there would not be high octane petrol and modern internal combustion engines. In the periodic table of chemical elements, rhenium belongs to group 7 and is located on the bottom next tungsten. It is so for a reason. Rhenium is one of the least abundant metals in earth’s crust. It is truly a very rare and precious metal. Because of being so rare, rhenium was discovered only in 1925 by three German scientists who studied columbite. Today this metal is extracted as a by-product in molybdenum mining from such a mineral as molybdenite. Pure ammonium perrhenate, that metallic rhenium is extracted from, is obtained as a result of refining and concentration of the ore. The main product used for producing rhenium is rhenium powder which is later baked or melted into small drops. Drops of this metal shine very well because of being highly resistant to oxidation by oxygen in the air. Besides, the density of rhenium is just one percent smaller than that of osmium - the densest metal on Earth. That is why such a small drop weighs a whole gramm and costs whopping 15 euros. When this drop is compared to one gram of lead, the difference in size becomes evident. Besides being high-density, this metal also has a high melting point which is just 236 Celsius degrees smaller than that of tungsten. This metal is the second most refractory metal. If a drop of rhenium is heated until red-hot with a powerful gas burner, you will see the drop of this metal start oxidizing at high temperatures.

Manganese and rhenium-found in nature and technetium- don occurs naturally in earth...also technetium is radioactive. Manganese use in medicine while rhenium use in gasoline...and technetium is used for do nothing... :)

Very informative. I like the format of your videos. Very straightforward introductions of the elements without a bunch of fluff. Well done!
I love your videos on the different elements and the compounds many of them form. Chemistry has always fascinated me, especially the strange, less known reactions that can occur. You explain this subject very well and have triggered old knowledge I had forgotten, bringing it back for me to re-discover all over again as well as things I didn't know to begin with. Thank you for your work producing these videos.
Your pliers melted before the sample did! I like the part explaining its use in engines for military vehicles. And of course, your trusted assistant, the cat
Thank you. I enjoy your vids, taking us thru the periodic table since we got outta school. Either I forgot a lot, or things have been added. Cheers
Thank you for the insightful and well structured videos into the world of chemistry!
Every element has a unique use & purpose. Thanks for this vid !
Thank you for such amazing and helpful videos!
I don't like chemistry but I still like to watch your videos and learn some stuff (Heard HReO4 for the first time :P )
In school I hated chemistry. I enjoy all of your videos you always connect how the chemical your talking about effect our life’s today. Thumbs x3
This video deserves lots of likes and good comments 😀, great video dude. I never hear of Rhenium before, pretty cool!
Thanks. Always interesting. I always watch the full video.
I really love your videos..and keep on waiting eagerly Everytime to watch your videos
Thank you for yet another interesting video.
I just held a 10KG block of Rhenium in my hand today. Damn is that stuff dense. The furnaces used to melt it and Tungsten have pure Hydrogen flowing through them to ensure that no Oxygen is allowed to react with the metal, it can be explody.
im surprised you didnt say about rhenium diboride, the hardest alloy on earth

It's funny that you melted your tongs before you got the Re to really get red hot I love these, it's so cool to see all these elements in their pure state
I've never been into chemistry but for some strange reason each time i see a thoisoi video i have to watch...
Very nice video sir 😊

Greetings Sir! One thing that impressed me is how useful it would be as a substitute for platinum as a jewelry metal but at a much lower price. (250$ per Troy ounce vs. over 900$ for platinum. Rhenium has very nearly the same density as platinum and is likewise highly resistant to corrosion. It is ieven more refractory than platinum second only to tungsten among the metals. Although it is technically not a platinum group metal it has all the properties of such metals and with its lustrous silvery color and immunity to tarnish it would make a fine and more affordable jewelry metal. When annealed it becomes quite ductile and malleable and could be easily worked into form. Of course it's extreme melting point nakes it difficult to cast but there are high tech ways of getting around that. Anyway, I guess Jewelers are very Conservative and like most Conservative people are sometimes lack imagination. I hope some Avant garde jewelry tries this idea out!

You may know this question, I once had a carburetor on a automobile engine. I purchased a screen metal that was mounted under the carburetor. As the fuel went through the screen , is reacted as a catalyst with this metal.this improved the fuel mileage, and made the car run better. What is this ,did it really work? And why can’t we buy this anymore if it functions as designed?
Can you please do americium soon

In the 60s we were breathing led that they put in the gasoline. Modern high octane gasoline has Rhenium in it? So now we're breathing Rhenium that is now present in car exhaust? Did I hear and understand that correctly?

When mercury?
Since the first ever combustion engines were designed to run on ethanol and on turpentine, we would have been better off had what you said been true, but it would not have stopped anything.

The standard brazilian gas is 87 octane, and the premium is 91. And both have 25% of ethanol.
