Rhapsody in Blue
By George Gershwin / arr. Gordon Goodwin
Item: 00-33370
Series: Gordon Goodwin Series
Category: Jazz Ensemble
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 6 (Professional / Very Advanced)
This is a tour-de-force, GRAMMY® Award-winning arrangement by Gordon Goodwin of Gershwin's masterpiece. The sax doubles call for piccolo (alto 1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and bass clarinet (bari). The second alto part has the well-known clarinet solo. This chart has it all---the thematic material, swing, key changes, solo space for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet, and trombone; and lead trumpet range is to written high F. The percussion part calls for mallets and timpani. Overall, a grasp of both jazz and classical concepts will make this chart stand apart from anything else. As recorded by the Big Phat Band. (2:20)

Bars 56 to 61 are killer for saxes. The next time a high school jazz band plays that correctly will be the first time.

@yami yeager Yeah, they played that set twice, one after the other, (evident when the 1st trumpet passes out at one point,) and the 1st was a bit cleaner. That was the year they won a competition at Berklee. I'm a member this year, and unfortunately it's taken a turn for the worse what with our school switching schedules to a non jazz friendly one as it were. Still good tho.

The beginning drum run at 2:18 sounds similar to the drum run in Mario Kart 8's Title theme. A call and response technique is used here, played by trumpets and responded by the saxes. This is rather common in many of Nintendo's OST. Also, the major key also helps it stay light and airy, like Nintendo's OST. But then again, that is just my take...

@@brandonm7952 bari is kinda rough to write for. as a bari player and arranger, this is really evident; it's the lowest member of the sax family so a lot of times when altos and tenors are playing a melody, it's too high for the bari to play. bari fills the role of a 5th trombone quite a bit, as it blends well (especially in the mid-low register) with bones, especially when there isn't a bass bone present (unlike this piece.) it's just an awkward instrument to write for a lot of the time

You're actually right, technically speaking it's not one of his most difficult or complicated. The only things that would give most bands trouble are the sax triplets at 56, the range of the 1st trumpet part, and finding a clarinetist good enough to do justice to Gershwin's intro. Obviously the Phat Band members are all incredibly virtuoso musicians and their tone and inflections make this definitely the best recording of this arrangement, but that doesn't mean it's unplayable. Count Bubba and some of Goodwin's other tunes have much harder technically challenging components to them.

BMACS02 2:19 is an excruciating pain to master...This song is a classic and yes it's not "professionally difficult" but it is one of Goodwin's Most famous and popular. A semi difficult would be take 5 or maybe Nyan Cat (I know that sounds silly but gee think about it ) so say something with less ignorant bliss, like "I have had an epiphany that this song had noble and hard working artists that devote there emotions to creating this breath-taking literature with a mix of jazz, symphony, and a conundrum of ancient sound and besides this run on sentence I honestly have no idea if I'm giving a argument or just stating my observant opinion to you but I do know one thing. I have absolutely and without a doubt on my mind have not a clue for what I'm awkwardly trying to explain...

If you look at the 1st trumpet part, you’ll find you need a god to play those high notes. It’s like a ballad or chorale piece, sure the rhythms and notes are easy but you have to go beyond the page and stylistically play it correctly. That’s the difference between an average musician and one that takes it to the next level.
