The ones that really surprised me were qualifying on a LEO course with the Ruger Old Army and the 30-30 for the rifle course. HR doesn't need the latest, greatest, plastic fantastic, whiz-bang fire arm with 5 lbs of doo-dahs to get the job done.

Very detailed and interesting video. Two take-a-ways were confirmed for me. First, a good shooter will make almost any firearm work, overall quality being the same. Second, on any given day it's often a toss-up as to which firearm will come out on top.

I'll go out on a limb , and put forth that a shooter experienced with DA Revolver trigger pulls can adapt to a striker or DA/ SA autoloader much easier than the reverse .

@@filianablanxart8305 I've seen it quite often. I talked with a much younger police firearms instructor last year and he commented that very few officers today would be able to qualify with a revolver.

Wish I could help Mr. Funk to a higher viewership than what we see today because he speaks with heart and interest. Spread the word folks. This man is unique.

Good morning, HR - To begin, I strongly believe this was a HIGHLY valuable and VERY common sense founded analysis. THANK YOU. Furthermore, I absolutely agree with your overriding conclusion, that the differences in the results attained with the four handguns - and they were wise choices, which are factually representative of large classes of sidearms - were pragmatically entirely inconsequential. So, here are my conclusions: 1. It’s “the Indian, not the bow and arrow” that counts. To prove this, Jim Cirillo, of the NYPD’s Stakeout Squad, defeated MANY hardened and heavily armed felons with six-shot K Frame S&W revolvers, loaded with .38 Special +P wadcutters. Even today, VERY few individuals - regardless of their handgun and ammunition - would stand a remote chance of defeating Detective Cirillo. 2. The “more is always better capacity crowd” needs to ask itself just what threats they are REALISTICALLY preparing to defeat? We are factually discussing lawful citizen defense, not the April ‘86 FBI Miami shootout. Even in an era of civil unrest and of armed home invasions and/or carjackings, the probability of civilians requiring “uber-armament” might be not too dissimilar to being struck by lightening. Furthermore, if one has the rare misfortune of being in an area where extraordinary threats are likely, then the smart choice might be to avoid those situations (and, yes, I realize there are some circumstances when that’s impossible - but they are extremely infrequent). 3. Becuase the typical defensively armed citizen does not devote the effort, time and money to become highly proficient, “practical reliability” may be quite important. Modern, well maintained revolvers and autoloaders (stoked with high quality commercial ammunition) are inherently VERY reliable. However, what about shooter-caused malfunctions, resulting from inadequate practice and unfamiliarity under pressure? To illustrate this, I wonder how many 1911-A1 owners might neglect to disengage the frame safety or how many Glock owners might fail to chamber a round, when confronted with a “seconds count, high stress” defensive confrontation . . . especially if those individuals have no law enforcement and/or military training and experiences? This might be a pragmatic revolver advantage - no safety and no tap/rack stoppages. 4. Finally, my only snubbie is a 2.25 inch barrel, .357 magnum, Ruger SP-101. Like the 9x19mm J Frame you used in this video, it has a “trench sight.” Several years ago, I added Crimson Trace laser grips, and they decidedly improved both accuracy and speed. My point is, the other three weapons had “regular” sights, the J Frame did not, perhaps that’s a slightly unfair comparison, but laser sights are an easy potential enhancement. THANKS again, this was one of your very best videos.

@@hrfunk HR - I neglected to mention this in my original comment, and it’s (imho) important: The many “side by side” shot elapsed-time comparisons you included were VERY effective and worthwhile. I suspect most individuals will want (for example) to say the M19 was slower than the M&P .40, but when the video clearly indicates that the time differences are absolutely inconsequential, it’s a highly effective way to document the .2 of a second is meaningless. BZ on that technique!

Just paint that front sight on the 940. Easily removed from stainless steel too. Great video. Thx for unmounting and moving the cam over and over and the editing. On the video topic...both.

Good morning, Howard, and Happy New Year to you and your family. We had a lot (11.8 inches, measure on my upper deck) of very wet and very heavy snow yesterday. Northern Virginia is still digging out, and I’m spending a little “pre-return to the shovel time” on the internet. I know you’re enjoying a brief KZread hiatus, but I again happened upon this video - which I love and which I believe is exceptionally valuable, due to your handgun selection and your highly quantitative assessments - earlier today. It further reinforces my “it’s the Indian, not the arrow” beliefs and, strangely enough, it is directly applicable to a recent change I’ve made to my EDC “system.” A few weeks ago, I reverted to my my 2.25 inch, .357 magnum, Ruger SP101, for both bedside and EDC use. I’ve loaded it with Buffalo Bore 158 gain, .38 Special P+ LSWCHs (which also have a gas check to prevent barrel leading). This round provides low-end .357 magnum velocity, penetration and expansion (the unjacketed soft lead alloy really expands well at velocities as low as the 800 to 900 FPS range) The revolver is stock with two exceptions: (1) I have coated the front ramp sight’s trailing adage with Testor’s bright Orange model paint and (2) I have installed a set of Crimson Trace laser grips (I really like the grips and that intense, small, red, laser dot increases accuracy at (let’s say) 10+ yards . . . plus, it just might give a miscreant something to consider, when that small, intones red beam illuminates his upper chest . . . who knows?). I belt carry with a Dillon’s holster that is very comfortable and conceals well under a jacket, sweater, or vest. Now, for others who may read this, five rounds (I always carry two six-round speed strips) is a minimum load, but: (1) every expert I’ve listened to suggests it is adequate under virtually all circumstances and (2) this is my “nice, low crime, suburban community” defensive weapon, not my “go to the ER in a sketchy part of anther town at 0300” option. And the crucial facts - for me alone - are: > the SP101 - and I’ve had it for a long time and shot it a lot - is absolutely reliable, very durable, plenty accurate, and comfortably concealable, > I prefer its extra heft, the ergonomics, and the additional .375 inch barrel length (muzzle velocity and sight radius) to J Frame snubbies, and > the Buffalo Bore rounds I carry are potent, specially designed for defense, and don’t have the recoil, muzzle flash, acoustic signature or over-penetration potential of many .357 magnums. So, Howard, THANKS AGAIN for this great video, which make me even more confident in this Winter EDC decision.

You’re welcome Roy. I hope you’ve succeeded in your shoveling duties. I think your SP101 is a great choice for the purpose you mentioned. I use a J-frame Smith in the same manner. Like you, I use a good .38 Special load and go about my business feeling quite secure. Confidence and familiarity with your equipment provides its own peace of mind. In the event you actually have to resort to your specific equipment, I think it will be more than adequate for the vast majority of defensive encounters. Happy New Year!

The S&W 640 Pro-Series has excellent sights and is a tack driver.

@@hrfunk With a pinned front sight, you have the ability to put on a nice fiber optic or tritium sight. My M360 has a fiber optic front, and it's very quick to get on target.

Another excellent video showcasing a very interesting topic. Your conclusions mirror my personal experience as I find that the sights, especially as I get older, are the main limiting factor in my speed/accuracy with the revolver. As others have suggested, I paint my revolver front sights rather than changing them out. I use white primer under fluorescent orange.

Great video and about what I expected from results (your LEO series proved you can shoot just about anything really well) . Got to say I shoot my CA Bulldog 45 Colt and 1911 in 38 Super about the same. Most important, I am pretty consistent from day to day with them both, which may be the most important factor when picking you handgun to pack.

excellent video! a great presentation of info & a good variety of firearms used; I like your deletion of cartridge capacity & reloading technique comparison (to me it is a very viable consideration yet I consider it to be a moderate or advanced concept for new gun owners to mull over at the time of selection & acquisition of a personal defensive firearm); my personal firearms in each group differs...'micro compact' (for me is 'pocket carry') group: Springfield Armory 911 Alpha in 380, Smith & Wesson 638 in 38 spl, and newly acquired used Smith & Wesson 642 in 38 spl; 'compact or medium' group: Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 1.0 in 9mm and Bersa Thunder 380 in 380 (both of these can be considered too small for a 'medium' size yet they are too large for me to pocket carry and serve as home defense/open carry for 'rallies/protests' (within pro-2A group gatherings with law enforcement observation); I guess my 'large' category is occupied by a Smith & Wesson 686 Powerport in 357 magnum with 6 inch barrel (usable in a home defense role yet heavy & unwieldy in dynamic room to room clearing)...it serves a tertiary 'standby' role in my gun cabinet (unloaded with 2-4 speed loaders nearby loaded with 38 spl +p hollowpoints); on a side note I recently owned a Taurus G2C in 9mm that really didn't outshine my 9mm Shield so it went bye-bye and the 642 came home with me...

Thank You, Great Video as always! Another factor I consider for myself is how quick am I able to present my defence in a life threating situation as I get to the point of aim and fire. That agian is a personal preference in were I am the most comfortable with my firearm. The hammerless J frame is my prefference for now. Training and practce have helped me determine these facts about myself, I am always looking for ways to Continously improve. Agian, Many Thanks Mr. HR!

Great video Chief. I was certain you were using 38s in the 19 until you told us it was in fact 357. How you get it back on target so fast and accurately is incredible. I just can’t do that with full power. Love my revolvers but I just feel their bulk when carried and just feel more comfortable with micro autos. Awesome video, thanks for all your work to bring these to us. Enjoy our crappy Memorial Day weather (Lorain County here so ours should be the same) :(

Interesting question. I'm non confrontational, so I use both. My three "most carried" concealed handguns: 1. S&W Model 3914 DAO 9mm semi auto (8+1) 2. S&W Model 642 .38 +P revolver 3. S&W M&P .380 Bodyguard semi auto Regardless if semi auto or revolver they are ALL DAO hammer fired. That is not a coincidence.

Great video as always! I love my wheel guns and feel very confident in carrying them on a daily basis. I don't however carry them on a daily basis mostly because I am very hard on all my tools and like to keep my wheel guns looking good and in pristine condition. For most, I would say that the reliability of the wheel gun is a big advantage during the daytime. Not taking into account for ammo or reload times. However when the Sun goes down, the clear winner for me at least when I think of less skilled shooters, would definitely be a good semi-auto with a weapon light/ Lazer combo with some really good tritium night sights. Being able to keep both hands with a proper grip on your weapon is very important. Not that you couldn't be very effective with a wheel gun and a flashlight but honestly a weapon light with a good integral laser which is properly zeroed is a huge Force multiplier.

I think that’s true so long as the shooter possesses the requisite training and experience to employ that system.

Outstanding job Chief, very interesting practical comparison. My opinion is revolvers are a bit harder to shoot accurately, but easy to determine if loaded or unloaded, so for a house gun I seemed to recommend the wheel gun especially for the novice. The auto loader takes more diversified training, reloading which you so nicely covered, clearing potential jams, some more ammo sensitivity, issues of this nature. Both are great for concealed carry, it boils down to what you feel more comfortable with and of course training. One thing I have learned is there is no such thing as the ideal or one best system for personal defense and concealed carry. The majority of people I know own multiple handguns often a revolver and pistol. In the common civilian self defense scenario either will serve them well, and hopefully its introduction will cause the criminal to flee, but best be prepared to use it and NEVER deploy it only as a THREAT.

Hey HR....Good to see you still making content. If the reload is deleted and a round is in the chamber for the semi-autos, it really should be a toss-up. I prefer a revolver, because you don;t have to worry about safeties or whether there is a round in the chamber. If semi-auto....a DA only or DA/SA.

Informative video again! It is the shooter more than the platform. I usually carry my very light S&W 351c in summer shorts pocket even though I have other choices. Practicing often to put 7 rounds of 22 WMR in a 4" circle at 7 yards. Cold weather brings out the 3" GP-100 or the G19. Practice to win.

Ha, ha! I agree! The vast majority of my training has involved semi-autos too. Even so, my wheelguns get the nod for off-duty use every once in a while.

Impressive shooting, especially w/a J Frame. As a veteran of a gunfight where I ran out of ammo my choice for duty carry would always be a modern semi auto. I’ve been retired since ‘97 and my EDC is either a 340PD or LCP, both in a pocket holster. Back & hip problems mean carrying my M&P Compact is not do-able, but my days of going after bad guys are long past. Good video, keep ‘em coming.

My thought is which weapon are you most comfortable with both in carrying concealed and getting rounds on target is the best for you. ALL of your rounds were effective fight stoppers in most cases. Just about every report/video I have seen show the bad guys really don't want to be shot. Try painting the front sight on your 940. LOVE the tee shirt design.

I learned 2 things from this video. 1) the model appeared to have got off the first shot quicker next to the semi auto. 2) despite all the negativity against the 40 S&W about recoil and fast follow up shots, you posted your quickest times. And yes that high shot in the 7 ring from a full power 357 is effective as can possibly be. As for the 40 S&W my last duty weapon was a Glock 22 up until I retired. I shot my scores with my S&W model 10 that I went through the academy with and carried on duty for about 4 years. When the transition started to auto pistols I like many others went through a plethora of semi-autos, when my agency mandated 1 gun and 1 caliber it was the Glock 22 and with that weapon I scored almost as good as my S&W model 10 and way better than any other semi-auto. Good video yes they were close but look through the video and I think I saw you get off that all important first fastest with the S&W 19.

Thank you! The Model 19 is a fine revolver and I enjoyed using it in this video. I really think the shots were all so close time-wise that if I repeated the test, the outcomes could reversed. Even so, I think any difference is basically academic. And neither platform really hinders one’s chances of surviving a deadly encounter. Thanks for watching!

Another great video and one that I found very informative. I've been mental debating whether my EDC (during the Sierra mountain winters) should be my S&W Model 27 or my Government model M1911. I have the same debate with respect to summer choice of EDC, i.e. Taurus model 605 versus a Sig Sauer Ultra M1911 compact. I shoot all these handguns about the same at the range. Your video has convinced me to conduct this same excellent test and see which of these firearms I shoot better, then train the most with those winners. BTW I especially liked your use of side-by-side video comparisons. It really does allow the viewer to see and determine for themselves if the difference is really significant.

For the Wild Card approach : As much as I like N Frames , a 1911 is definitely slimmer. So a 1911 , carried IWB would be suitable year round .

As someone else said: What this video proves is YOU shoot these firearms reasonably well. If you take a novice shooter and put them in their hands, the results will be a lot different. Minor gaps will become much wider. Watching muzzle flip between the two platforms, watch each series side by side several times, shows recoil is more with the revolvers. A skilled shooter has no problem compensating for that difference, you do it exceptionally well, a novice not so much. The statement near the end of the video is key: TRAINING WITH WHAT YOU SHOOT! Now, if every encounter with a bad guy was this static or as static as “statistics” tell us, 3-5 shots…blah, blah, blah…..your summation is 100% correct. Throw in multiple bad guys, adrenaline, lack of most CCW carrier’s training, ease of carry, weight/per round, and the choice is much easier to make…..Give me a safe action (no safeties) bottom feeder with at least 10 hounds in the primary magazine (more in the secondary) and I’m good to go. Compact M&P, Glock, with a full size mag for backup. I really enjoyed this video, especially the side by side shooting part. I’m gonna watch that again. Good shooting and superb video HR.

When I went to qualify for the NRA test, my choice was use my Glock 27 or my wife’s S&W model 66 with 2 1/2 inch barrel. I chose the 66 and shot the target to pieces in all the right places, scoring a 303 out of a possible 315. For some novice shooters the grip on revolver is better than on many semi-autos. The only downside today is multiple attackers are more common than back in 1990. The choice now depends on what part of the big liberal city will you be carrying. In my city 10 neighborhoods account for 90% of all shootings. Higher capacity and quick reloads are a must...so I have a solid S&W 4006 with spare magazines for these gang infested places. HR is great with any handgun, even his 44magnum.

Enjoyed the video. I don't discriminate, I carry both at different times. Interestingly at the range one day I did quite a bit better on the accuracy part with a police surplus Model 10. Now I was shooting single action on it. I need to practice more when ammo prices come down. I think that in any encounter with a bad guy its the training and confidence on whatever platform you use that will win the day. From what I have read criminals are not the sharpest tools in the tool shed and may be bedazzled by the extra ammo capacity of a semi-auto while not realizing a well placed shot from an intended victim will quickly null out that advantage.

Thanks for watching! I’ve yet to see a bad guy stand there casually when someone fires a shot in his direction. The reaction is much the same regardless of what type of firearm launches the shot.

Just get a gun that "fits" ya' ... If it feels good in the hand, the balance, and the grips fits you, the cartridge is one you can handle, and it conceals well for you in the manner you want to carry, then that's it. One advantage to a revolver however, is the grips. Most factory grips can be replaced with something from Pachmyer or Hogue, and others. This is not so readily done with a semi auto. Another "advantage" with a revolver: They just be "cool". I love a good wheelgun. PS: ref. the 940, may I suggest paint that front sight. I've got an SP101, and pained the ramp white. Actually, all my revolvers have had the front sight ramps painted white. I use a paint marker/pen called BriteMark that I got from Amazon. You’re welcome. I doubt I’ll change the front sight on the 940. I rarely carry it these days. I have another J-frame with a different front sight that I carry most of the time.

A sufficiently wide , well grooved black ramp isn't terrible . OTOH , I dispise 3 dots , and every such imeadately gets front sight painted solid ( ok , nail polished usually ) .

Some day's I carry a glock 19 some days I carry a Smith and wesson model 15, God forbid I have to use either for protection but if I dont plan on reloading.

At the end of day, you want to hit with the first one or two not the last of 15. For multiple attackers, defending against a mob, bank robbery shootout, the semi auto has the advantage. For most one on one self defense situations, the revolver is just as effective, and in some cases more. Revolver shooters generally , those who practice seriously, tend to concentrate on accurately placing shots , not hoping to hit with volley fire

Fantastic comparison! Thanks! I enjoy both, I like revolvers because you can leave them loaded with any extra pressure on springs. I like semi autos because they generally can take more abuse. Depends on the mission. Fortunately for me I shoot both well.

That model 19 is beautiful, I'm glad you made that 1 high shot w/it, since .357 mag has 96% 1 shot stop anywhere in that area of the body(FBI STAT's). The 19 clearly won in all aspect's of your test. Great content.

I agree. The new micro-compact pistols are very impressive. I really like my Hellcat.

I just caught up with this one, great video. In your hands, I rate all 4 guns equally. I believe this was the 2nd time you have said on camera that deadly encounters are usually decided by the rounds in the gun. Many gun writers have said the same thing in print, and the most credible comments come from current or former LEO'S.

Hi HR, A most interesting video. Before watching the video I had assumed that the semi autos would come out on top. Not because it's a fundamentally better design, but because you've carried one as a service pistol for more years than it would be polite to count, and would be more proficient with them than the revolvers. However you've demonstrated that marksmanship is marksmanship regardless of the firearm. More importantly you've shown that with adequate training and regular practice almost any pistol can serve as a self defense pistol.

Although this topic gas been covered extensively, I thought your approach was excellent! I especially liked your split screen sxs comparison vid's. and would like to see that more often in the future. At the end of the day, in the hands of a competent shooter I don't really believe there is any meaningful difference. I also believe no matter which platform one chooses to carry for self defense, practice is the key!

@@hrfunk Liked the fact you stressed both what was practical, and what was keeping within defensible limits for civilian defensive shooting. If you need 5 fully loaded mags to get the job done, a prosecutor will most likely eat your fanny up.

Good job. It's harder to do these drills objectively than it appears. I know when I do drills on the timer I have to resist the urge to "game" the drill.

Outstanding review Marine. My daily decision is M&P 9 Shield or 357 S&W AirLite PD 386, K frame. There is not a wrong choice between them. I have 9 shots with the Shield and 7 with the 357. Lasers on both and the K frame has better sights.

Sounds like you have a great selection of defensive handguns!

As always, I feel that the moral of THIS story is that the most important part of the weapons system is the SHOOTER. A relatively dedicated shooter who has practiced with both semi-autos and revolvers will be more capable of practical accuracy with either than a shooter who does NOT practice with whatever they happen to have. Honestly, to fully answer this ongoing debate, I feel it would require a major study encompassing hundreds of shooters of varying skill levels and levels of exposure to either platform. And in the end, I think it would STILL come down to the man behind the gun. I don't care if I had an AR with the fun switch, optics, and all the bells and whistles... I STILL wouldn't want to come up at under fifty yards against Bill Jordan in his prime with his Model 19!

No matter how much you practice, it's still impossible for you to shoot 20 rounds out of a revolver as fast as I can shoot 20 rounds out of a single magazine 🤷... There's just no possible way to get around that point in the argument, yet everyone seems to lose interest in the debate when it gets brought up or they decide to make excuses in favor of the revolver such as "people run away after the first shots"🙄..... But even if revolvers and autos were perfectly matched in every possible other way, the auto would still win the debate on capacity alone 🤷

@@JivedSonen In citizen self defense, the citizen is criminally and civilly responsible for EVERY round fired from his weapon. So "20 rounds" versus "5, 6, or 7 rounds" is a pointless argument. You had better make sure you hit what you aim at with minimal rounds to get the assailant stopped. Stop an assailant under justified homicide circumstances, but kill the little girl at McDonalds with a stray round, and you will be a convicted felon. FORGET the number of rounds on-board your carry weapon. Practice drawing from concealed holster, fire ONE round center mass, re-holster, then REPEAT the drill. It is critically important that you place that first round center mass from concealed draw, so 90% of your practice should be one round fired center mass from the draw. The other 10% of practice can be double taps and reload / failure drills. Most of what is practiced by Police or Military is NOT applicable to citizen self defense. The citizen does not have an endless logistics chain behind him with lots of instant backup on radio call. The citizen will likely be alone, no backup and no communications when attacked, so his weapon had better work NOW or he may not survive the encounter. Several of my local gun shops have had lots of compact 380/9mm autos returned, traded in on 38/357 revolvers, as new shooters learned that the small autos are very unreliable for them. Irritates me, because I used to be able to pick up used revolvers at pretty low prices. Now I can't find revolvers at all, but there are TONS of compact 380/9mm autos for sale!

Another great video. Well done and analyzed. Just wanted to throw something out for debate. You start each run basically already with sights on target. That saves some time, especially when the sights are not all that great, like in the case of the 940 revolver, imho. Observing your 2nd shot in each run, you always seem to fully re-establish your sight picture, performing aimed shots, instead of pointed, even at close distance. Bringing the sights back on target appears to be a major contributor to the overall time. I posit that if you would start in a low ready position, or draw from the holster, the difference in time between the guns would show even more. Just a thought. Looking forward to your thoughts on the matter.

I think drawing from a holster introduces the variables imposed by the holsters themselves as well as the reaction time of the shooter. I started the drills as I did so as to minimize the affects of those variables.

Was not amazed at the results both are good Platforms for CC, I Carry a 1911 and a S&W 5906 In the Coat Weather but now Its a Charter Arms 38 SPL Light Weight, with 158 GN JHP , do not feel under Armed Good Concise Video as usual Semper Fi !

Someone who has mastered a DA Revolver to accurate and consistent , will find other popular trigger systems manageable . Someone who has only used striker fired , will have a challenge with DA Revolver ( or DA/ SA semi) .

Another psychological factor Colonel Cooper talked about was that when you shoot the first guy they’re both in shock that you’ve actually responded this did not go according to plan for them. So while they are recovering from that initial shock the time that you shooting with and with any of those guns has been completed. They won’t be able to respond. Carry what you shoot best and be happy. Just a thought.

First, regarding the 940 sight problem: red/orange OR yellow florescent paint, not white = problem solved. On another note...After 6 years of spotty inconsistent carry (and a recent wake up call!)...I just safe queened my Shield 9mm (1.0) + 2 x 8 round mags and upgraded to a....S&W 642 .38 Spl. with a speed strip which I plan on carrying CONSISTENTLY everyday..... Ya'll thought I was going to say Shield Plus 9mm....didn't you? Lol...Seriously, after never experiencing a weapons malfunction with my shield, it malfunctioned recently during a ccw renewal requal...it was dry (from me carrying it in a leather holster everyday for six months...between the last time I trained and reoiled it....it was cold at the range I was at and the darn pistol jammed on me and I had to run a malfunction drill in the middle of my actual re-qual...I then re-qualed on my s&w 642...and sent all 10 rounds home in the 9 circle or better WITH NO MALFUNCTIONS....and if I did, the only drill I'd have to run is pull the trigger again... "..Some might give me a hard time as to why I carry a pistol with no spare mags or a tiny revolver with just a few speed strips...but you know what is better than not having a gun (on you)? Having a gun (on you)..." -Mr. Guns n Gear

You more or less echoed a point I was trying to make in the video. Specifically, choose whatever serves you best and makes you feel most secure.

I am equally good with either handgun. But I like the cap magazine 19 +1 is real fire power.

Glad to see some revolver love, based on my threat profile, i carry my Taurus 85 during the daytime through the week, and either my g-19 or shield at night, based on last years unrest through this year, i felt the need to up-gun. based on some gunfights i've seen , each of the participants mostly use one hand on the gun, can you do some strong side one-handed drills to see how effective ,if at all, would be?

I was with you until you commented that at 30 ft you were right at the limit of distance for the j-frame Smith. I regularly practice with my Model 36 out to 50 yards and it shot 4 inch groups at 50 yards in double action. People who believe that the short sight radius means the gun is not as accurate are wrong. You do have to work harder at keeping the sites steady. But that is not that hard to do. I regularly fired for some time when I still carried my Ruger 4-in 357 100 yard shots on double action and shot 4 inch groups with it. They will shoot if you will hold the gun still. One thing I will point out is the 9:40 and 9 mm is a more powerful cartridge than a 38 special in my model 36. By about 20% I believe. However, I tend to carry the first five rounds in my Model 36 as Glazer safety slugs and those are damn hard to beat.

Thanks for the comment. Just to clarify, I wasn’t really commenting on the mechanical accuracy of the J-frame snubbys. In fact, there are some shooters who believe the shorter barrels are inherently more accurate because they don’t move as much while the bullet is traveling through them. Rather, I was referencing defensive accuracy where the shooter is under stress and engaging a target that might not (and probably won’t) stand perfectly still and wait to be shot.

I love a good revolver, 32H&R, 357, 44, all in the magnums!

Excellent info. I think in the big picture your results show semi-autos have a slight edge over DA revolvers. The long heavy trigger of the revolver will hinder speed and accuracy with 99% of the population. Both the revolvers had one wild shot in the drills with a skilled shooter. The shorter, lighter and more consistant trigger of striker fired pistols makes it easier to get well placed quick shots. The new micro compact 9mm pistols offer slim, light weight, fast, accurate, higher capacity firepower that revolvers can't keep up with. That being said if all you have is a snubby revolver, it'll get the job done.

@b=Bigbore In my timed tests, drawing and firing from a concealed position, at 7 yards and less, the small framed 38 revolver (FOR ME) consistently landed center mass hits faster than the small (Bersa Thunder 380) and mid framed autos (Springfield XD 9mm 4" barrel). I was using a Taurus 85 steel frame bobbed hammer 2 inch barrel with Crimson trace laser grip. A significant factor in the Taurus speed advantage is that the revolver grip is easier to access because the cylinder width naturally pushes the grip away from the body. Using the laser on the Taurus actually slowed first round fired by about 1/10th second. When fired without the laser and using the old police, "draw,lock the elbow into the side then fire" trick actually landed first round center mass about 1/10th second faster because "locating the laser" actually slowed me down.

I think you got it right, at least with respect to 90% of the average shooters and gun owners. From what I've seen on the range when I teach students, the semi autos give them a slight edge that may be critical depending on the circumstances. I personally usually shoot my revolvers better than my semi autos. But I suspect the heavy trigger on the revolver makes me focus much more on trigger pull fundamentals; I find I get mentally lazy about trigger pull when shooting semi autos. Even when I conduct drills under time constraints, the revolvers just eke out a slight scoring advantage.

I think, realistically, even the shots that “wandered” would still have been reasonably effective. Between that and the time differences of a few hundredths of a second, I feel that any difference between the platforms is simply academic. For whatever it’s worth consider myself to be more proficient with semi-autos than wheelguns (at least they were the focus of the vast majority of my training).

It would be interesting to see a test on full size guns. However few folks carry 4 inch revolvers.

Carrying a 4 inch under a shirt tail needs more attention to details than 2.5/ 2.75/ 3.0 of same frame size , but it can be done . But meanwhile , a good medium frame 2.5/ 2.75/ 3.0 will give essentially the same practical accuracy .

That depends entirely upon the specific load(s) in question.

for the research part of it when comparing revolvers, semi autos and even calibers in defense situations the first thing we need to do is filter out law enforcement, military, and street gangs shoot outs out of the data on whats needed by a citizen in a defense situation because its corrupts the research when we want to filter it out to only a private citizen, claude werner did a great job on this and we think the same, i have been studying this since the 90's from reading all kinds of defense with a firearm articles even to this day a high commitment to reading based on defense with a firearms and the average citizen, a semi auto is not necessarily better then a revolver for multipe attackers or a mob, here in minneapolis a guy with a semi auto was out numbered but was able to get away with out a shot fired, the revolver would be the same result in that no one wants the odds of getting a bullet even though they know your revolver or semi auto doesnt have enough ammo, a common myth about revolvers is multiple attackers stay around but every thing happens so fast the attackers dont even know you have a revolver nor do attackers count shots because they dont want the odds of getting hit despite there not being enough ammo, we also have to rememeber a revolver is not just 5 shots, many carry speed strips and speed loaders so the defense situation has less to do with your ammo and more to do with how you use it, the robbery situation with a revolver your going to hold your cover and defend your self and people your responsible for but not chase and this is the difference between law enforcement and the citizen, we only have to defend from cover, law enforcement must chase wich requires more rounds of ammunition and being that they have to go to the bad guy and we only need to avoid and hold our cover so its a big difference, one of the problems in self defense research data is that law enforcement defense situations got lumped into citizens data wich is very different because our role and citizens and how we respond in defense situtations is much different then law enforcement, this is why small calibers and revolvers are fine for defense, its because if you take law enforcement out of the defense situation data it shows success because a citizen doesnt have to go after armed suspect and shoudnt but stay and defend possition allowing law enforcement that role of going to get suspects wich means more shots fired, more ammo, rifles and more resources, Claude werner has a citizen defense only data base 15,000 or more armed self defense events of private citizens and whats gathered is when you take out armed defense situations with law enforcement, military and even gangs that the citizen was no worse off defending themselves with a revolver or even a small caliber like a 22. if we leave in law enforcement data it woud appear more shots fired in a defense situation, more ammo needed, more daily exposure to danger, more ambushes, more having to go to trouble like warrants, drug raids, so its a very big difference if we compare data mixing in law enforcement data, it corrupts the data. for every one situation you find where a revolver or a small caliber like a 22 wasnt enough in a defense situation you can find just as many semi autos 9 mm, 40, 45 that didnt get the job done either and thats because it has less to do with caliber or ammo capacity but the person behind the gun, for example if as a private citizen you pray and spray rounds in a defense situation its waisting ammo so that could end up in a data base showing how people need more rounds, but its not a question of how many rounds but how they used those rounds and did they train with their weapon, so this is how the research can be corrupted as far as just what does a private citizen need to defend themselves and whats found is that many times a shot doesnt have to be fired and attackers run away but not for law enforcement because you as a police officer now have to go looking for armed suspects so shots may be fired and more ammo needed and more resources like bullet proof vests, 5.56 rifles and other things a normal citizen doesnt have to get involved in, nor can the citizen risk courts holding something against a citizen who chased suspects when they should have stayed, we have to remember the sheep dog mind set doesnt make us police officers, there is a limit the private citizen must understand as far as to give chase or not, mostly staying with your cover and defending only you and those your responsible for is best not chasing down suspects

With you shooting, I guessed it would be a tie! I guess that’s the main point. It’s not the gun, it’s the shooter, ie my wife loves the G19 while my older sisters prefer the J frame revolvers. Who’s right? Yes!

I didn't think the semi-autos would dominate over the revolvers in your hands, but I really would like to see those comparisons done by an inexperienced shooter. These days I hear a lot of folks saying you should get a wheel gun for your wife (assuming wife is a beginner). It seems like the double action trigger pull would negatively affect accuracy and times with such a shooter. If you ever decided to set up such a test, you probably would want to use .38+Ps in the Model 19. I hope you have a good Memorial Day Chief Funk.

I think the deciding factors in terms of developing competence with any firearm are training and experience. A novice with either a revolver or a semi-auto will likely struggle. It takes commitment and effort to attain requisite skills with either one. Thanks for watching!

I hear that revolvers tend to sting more of the similar caliber sizes. Meaning that in most cases you will use less rounds. Like a 45 going 1300 ft per as a hollow point seems to stay closed. But a 357 mag no problem. But a 45 acp at 1177 hollow does just fine

Rainforests have probably been wiped off portions of this planet to produce the volume of paper used over the years to publish articles, books, and pamphlets on handgun “Stopping Power.” In the end, there is still not a definitive conclusion. I would urge you to carry a firearm that works well for you and load it with the ammunition you prefer. Beyond that, there are just too many variables to accurately predict the future.

Good video, I believe that training will undoubtedly come into play more so than which gun. Curious about how to handle a situation in an enclosed space as to the volume of the discharge without hearing protection? Your thoughts on this please? Again good video as always

There is no good answer for that question. Most of us don’t wear hearing protection 24/7. If you have to fire indoors, you will likely suffer dome da mm age to your hearing.

Nice video. Could your reaction time from beep to shot 1 account for any difference in the total time for the drill? I noticed (at least once) that a longer time produced better accuracy. Not much of an insight, but there it is. It also seemed like the revolvers had more muzzle flip. That may be down to caliber and ammo and maybe just a bad impression on my part.

I think in some instances the longer delay was somewhat detrimental to accuracy. There was definitely more muzzle rise with the Model 19 due to the 357 cartridges.

Since I was trying to compare the platforms, and not the skill of the shooter, I don’t know that it would be illustrative to involve a novice.

I think this was the most objective test of revolver vs semi-auto that I've seen on KZread. I didn't know the S&W 940 existed. Ruger makes an LCR in 9x19mm. In both cases, I have to ask why? What advantage does a 9x19mm cartridge serve in a revolver vs other revolver cartridges? Another question I have is regarding split times. From the first shot, how important is rapid fire? Doesn't the human body need time to react to being shot (I'm assuming you don't get a lucky hit right between the eyes, just a mid torso hit)? There's a bit to unpack here. I'm finding that my willingness to dress around a gun or carry a "heavy" gun (you define heavy) has been declining. But I've been carrying for so long that not having a gun feels too weird to me. Also, crime in my area is sadly on the up tick. I ordered a S&W M&P340 which I hope to pick up this week. I'll probably only carry specials in it. The 340PD is cool and all with its fancy titanium cylinder. But that makes it cost quite a bit more and also limits what you can shoot out of it. Anything that damages the protective coating even a little bit starts leading to rapid cylinder erosion.

I’ll try to answer your questions in the order you asked them. There are a few reasons one might opt for a wheelgun chambered in 9mm. First, it would allow a common cartridge to be shared if a shooter already owned (or was planning to purchase) a semi-auto chambered for the parabellum round. Also, during normal times, it’s usually a little easier to find inexpensive 9mm practice ammo than it is to find .38 Specials or .357’s (at as reasonable a price, that is). So the 9mm would thereby allow less expensive, and hopefully more frequent, practice. In terms of power, the 9mm tends to fall between the .38 and the .357, and there is a plethora of defensive ammunition options. It also generates a recoil impulse that most shooters can master. Lastly, it permits the use of moon-clips which allow for very fast reloads. Regarding the number of shots fired in a defensive encounter, you are correct in surmising there will likely be some perceptible delay from the time an attacker is shot until the results of that shot produce a reaction. That said, if one is legally justified in shooting said attacker, it is wise to fire more than one shot. Two or even three shots increase the odds that at least one bullet will strike a vital area and stop the attack. Finally, concerning the titanium cylinder of your new revolver. Don’t be too concerned with damaging it. I’ve owned a 342 Airlite Ti for over 20 years. It also has the titanium cylinder. A few simple precautions will alleviate any problems. To begin with, don’t shoot lead bullets in that particular revolver. The use of jacketed bullets will prevent the build up of lead on the cylinder face. Also, when you clean the cylinder, use a nylon brush rather than a brass or stainless steel version. Also, don’t try to get it too clean. You don’t have to scrub every last bit of firing residue off of it. You really just need the cartridges to chamber and extract without difficulty.

@@hrfunk Thanks for the well thought out reply. It didn't occur to me that 9mm could serve that role in a revolver. I know it's not typical, but I have a hand loading bench and can load 38/357 as well as 38 Short Colt and 38 Long Colt. I know that's fine for practice, but I hear all sorts of controversy on hand loads for use in self defense although no one has pointed out a case where a prosecutor focused on the ammunition in an otherwise justifiable shooting. Your advice on double taps is noted. When people are wearing clothing and such, it may be impossible to tell where the first shot landed in many cases. Regarding the Ti cylinder, I think I failed to communicate properly. I ordered the M&P340 which has a steel cylinder and no lock. Other than that, it is identical to the 340PD which does have the Ti cylinder. The 340PD costs a lot (to me) more although it does shave off a couple oz using the lighter cylinder. So I won't have to worry about cleaning issues. 158gr LSWC-HP projectiles can deliver quite a whack. I don't know how much of a difference there is between standard pressure and +P with those projectiles, but Buffalo Bore loads them both ways. The 20A is +P and the 20C is standard pressure. Obviously there are much lighter bullets available, jacketed, semi-jacketed, and straight lead..

The big advantage of semi autos is that 9mm ammo is much cheaper than 38 and widely available so you can practice much more. I love revolvers but practice has become expensive. And whatever tool you use you need to be really good with it.

Nice video. One thing I hear every time from someone who CCWs a revolver is if there is a failure to fire you want a revolver. Thoughts?

Since semi auto pistols are dependent upon their ammunition for proper functioning, revolvers will always have at least a slight edge in reliability.

Agreed. Revolvers equal less reliability concerns. If you carry any semi, shoot it, shoot it, shoot it until you know you can trust it with your life 👍

Actual answer: Whichever you, the individual, get you best hits with. Alternative scenario: If you're speaking in practical survival terms, in cases where support gear like lube/parts/mags are no longer just a click away or jaunt to the fun shop away, and you need to stay on the move, and must already hump shelter/water/fire/food/medical on/about your person before you even get into tools/weapons, that's the time when there's a LOT to be said for compact reliable firearms that need nothing else to work but their ammunition...and if by some particularly unlikely, unlucky turn of fate you need space gun firepower to survive something, well, what you have will get you one. *shrug*

Revolver vs. semi~auto presents a conundrum for me. To this day the S&W 646 with 6 inch barrel was the best handgun I've ever fired using .357 loads. The recoil was incredibly minimal and it performed smoothly. While I can shoot that better than a semi~auto, capacity is why I chose a semi~auto several years ago. I also confronted 3 of 4 ex~cons intent on doing a home invasion with my shotgun. In retrospect, I would choose an AR with a standard capacity magazine for that kind of situation. I'd also rather have a semi~auto pistol than a revolver where more than 2 perpetrators are involved, especially ex~cons who are bigger than me.

I have a feeling that they didn’t give you any trouble when you challenged them with your shotgun. Whenever I’ve pointed a shotgun at someone and told them to do something, they have complied very quickly.

Like millions of people who use guns to defend themselves every year, my defense weapon deterred one of the 4 ex-cons who showed up at the rear of our home with green gloves 🧤 and outstretched arms. I glanced in another direction for a few seconds and when I looked back where the hoodlum had been...total silence and no sign of anyone. They all left quicker than they came. Staring straight at a pointed shotgun barrel was enough to stop them dead in their tracks. They were all subsequently caught a few minutes later.
