🔧 Built by Truckers, for Truckers 🔧
Founded by Chace Barber and Eric Little in 2016, Edison Motors is a testament to the trucking spirit. Beginning with a 1969 Kenworth Logging Truck named "Old Blue," they journeyed from Merritt, BC, hauling logs to the Yukon and drilling rigs in Alberta. Frustrated with newer trucks, they rebuilt classics from the frame up, expanding into power generation and off-grid solar systems in 2019. Their journey led to the creation of the Edison Truck, a robust electric truck tailored to logging and heavy vocational industries.
🔩 Upgrade Without Replacing: Edison Electrification Kit 🔩
Keep trucks on the road longer with the Edison Electrification kit. Upgrade your driveline to electric without replacing the entire truck. Ideal for vocational applications, this kit is a cost-effective solution. Unlike other electric trucks, Edison Motors offers customer choice. Choose between Rebuilding (utilizing existing cab and frame rails) or Remanufacturing (brand new frame and chassis).
🚚 Payload Efficiency: The Weight Balance 🚚
Edison Trucks match the weight of a normal diesel truck. With reduced motor weight and additional fuel balancing out battery weight, experience efficiency and increased payload capacity. The L series, though slightly heavier, remains comparable to a normal diesel truck.
🛠️ Keep Your Equipment with Rebuilt Trucks 🛠️
For vocational trucks, keep your equipment with a rebuilt truck. Edison's e-pto and control system integrate seamlessly. No need to replace your entire body when upgrading to an electric truck.
🔧 Bespoke Manufacturing: Handcrafted to Your Needs 🔧
The manufacturing process at Edison Motors is a testament to their commitment to customer satisfaction. Each Edison Truck undergoes a meticulous five-step process, from frame and rolling chassis preparation to final touches and rigorous testing. The focus is on building a truck that reflects the customer's requirements, embracing the philosophy of "Building The Truck Of The Future With The Quality Of The Past."
🔌 Electric or Diesel-Electric: Your Power, Your Choice 🔌
Edison Motors offers both fully electric and diesel-electric vocational trucks based on customer demands. The onboard generator ensures continuous operation in areas lacking charging infrastructure.
💡 Advantages of Electric: Power, Torque, Longevity 💡
Edison Trucks bring increased power, torque, reliability, and longevity. Inspired by electric freight trains, regenerative ability harnesses energy for efficient uphill climbs.

Make sure you guys add an option for shore power. Also the generator that you add onto the rig should allow for nat gas substitution. That way you can tie into an existing gas well on lease or electric power that’s available on location.

Not really a big problem if they go with a diesel generator (probably depends on what the customer want). The same way they can pull power out of it for other things. They can also use a natural gas generator to put power into the rig.

Here in Europe (I'm in Spain) a lot of trucks are offered on sale with an interesting extra pack: "City pack" that usally means: extra muffler, other extra insonorizations, low noise hydraulic pump and systems, and extra or dual radiators to avoid fans screaming. Typical trucks whit this pack are garbage truck (most of the work are done on night shift) and the chassis for buses. ...reading my words... garbage truck are good candidates for your system: they need powerful hydraulics to be fast moving the compactor and spend a lot of time starting, stopping, red light, maneuvering...

I believe they have input AND output on main panel for just these reasons ... Continue operation during diesel engine failure and/or maintenance of the diesel. These can be used both to draw from AND to provide power to the grid. Perhaps someone from edison can confirm this. Add to this someone's point regarding extremely quiet operation when desired or needed (e.g. residential work). Also, as someone mentioned, when grid power might be less expensive than diesel.

Just apply what others have done to what you want… Safety of the workers is the most important thing in my opinion ! And please think about battery fires over a live well, a blow out can and has killed.

From a sub-reply, cross-posted here as hopefully to be read by Edison: One comment mentions need for input from grid or other source ... I believe Edison already permits input AND output on main panel for just these reasons ... Incl ofc their solar pack. This permits operation during diesel engine failure and/or maintenance of the diesel... Just roll up another gene. Note that with both input and output to batteries, one can both draw from AND provide power to the grid. Perhaps someone from edison can confirm this. ... Add to the benefit/need for this feature someone's point regarding extremely quiet operation when desired or needed (e.g. residential work... Constr vehicles). Also, as someone else mentioned, when grid power might be less expensive than diesel, why burn fuel when you can hook up a cable to grid when operating statically. ... Note that a main benefit of being able to provide power to the grid is also one of national security. The electric vehicle industry will have more benefit to the environment when production costs are lower, and production processes/materials are greener. The benefit to national security will be more immediate, given the stability that power-to-grid (and -microgrid) that these vehicles will supply. If Edison is not talking to the government about this, then they should be. Fair-sized diesel generators may be needed in a pinch for national defense. Make sure all of your trucks are compatible with mil spec electric supply... And sport a Canadian flag on their paint somewhere, too! 🇨🇦

In the Lloydminster area oilfield, there is at least 20 rigs that I know of running c9 engines. You could possibly downsize to even a c7 generator unless you are frequently doing 3 hour rig moves. I think it would be cool to use a whisper watt enclosed generator, that way when there is an engine or generator failure in the future companies could have a complete unit that is readily available that they could swap in. 4 bolts, 3 wires and an hour later (with a little help from a 40 ton picker truck) back in service. The consultant wouldn't even know you shut down

This would change the way boats are being built no need for big engine and generator rooms, less fuel it would redesign the boat in a good way

Just think how this may also be a boon to safety: the operator and crew will hear a cable thread snap, or a part wearing unevenly. Maintenance, longevity, and safety will benefit as well ... if the works "don't sound just right", the operator will know, and can inspect to determine if there is need for service, lubrication, or (in this case) de-icing.

The advantage Edison has is more in the integration than completely new designs. They are not making new service rigs, they are just adjusting the power train. The only thing that is strictly Edison is the E-axles. Floodrolics will handle the electrical interface. The rest is just off the shelf electric motors, batteries, and other equipment. It’s the integration that is where Edison is going to grow the most and in a few years you will see others following suit. But Edison will be an industry leader because of its business philosophy of no obsolescence, and minimal bespoke parts with owner repair in mind.

You certainly can spread and balance the load a lot better with electric motors dimensioned for each application (air compressor, hydraulic pump, etc.) I've never worked with such things to have a better understanding of the inner workings of the rig or the work itself by the people running around it, so I can't say much. Keeping heat away from the workers during summers and heat close workers during winters seems to be something to think about when dealing with all the engine/motors, compressor, pumps, etc. Also, keeping batteries at a good working temperature all year long is a thing to think about, so you guys will need a good heat management on those. Keeping everything safe from external fluids and particles to avoid fires and fails does worry me, since that sort of work is a good dirty work, usually more then standard mining operations.

It seems like a great application. You pre build the engine/generator on a skid. You lift it it in and bolt it down. You pre build alll the controls and bolt them on the truck. By pre building everything you minimize conversion time.

I can see this being an effective solution for mine sites here in australia, very remote, often high torque requirements instead of top speed, 3 trailers of iron ore between train depots and/or ports would really suit this kind of solution, as well as some smaller service trucks that they use on sites/depots/ports would benefit hugely. I think companies in Australia like Rio Tinto, Woodside and BHP would probably be interested in ideas like this as they're always trying to reduce costs and carbon emmissions to meet with regulations here, and with their extensive diesel electric train network they probably already have the infrastructure to support this.

Thats sounds fantastic! If I might ask for a "future video", it would be to revisit this company after working a while with the diesel-hybrid system and ask them who it influenced their work environment (the stress level you guys talked about) and if they had maybe less dangerous situations because of better situational awareness and maybe if they see a change in the time they needed to bring new coworkers up to speed with operations. I think, those things might even be interesting for future customers. Because if you safe money because of less accidents, faster and more efficient training and less downtime of crews because they stay healthier thanks to reduced stress (and maybe work even more productive), investing in a diesel hybrid from Edison might pay for itself.

Something I never thought about is generator and truck run away from a gas or blow out. Your electric rig can still run everything without a Gen for power so if you are getting a kick of gas turn off the motor and run 100% on batteries until the gas is dealt with. Ot if you trigger a gas alarm it can shut the motor down but maintain full capabilities

It may not be feasible, but I think if you could somehow get the front axles to drive, turn and switch between on, off, and regenerative breaking, it could open a new list of possibilities. Think a truck like Topsy where it never had a 6x6 option, but now that you offer it, it could be an add-on if so desired. I understand the electric motors put better torque to the ground, and you are keeping it simple on the rig, but for a future project, I think it would be an interesting concept.

I hope this works as well if not better than you guys think. Your thinking is based on fundamental principles and use of explosion proof electric motors will actually improve safety of that of the current diesel engine powered rig. Whilst you will still run a diesel engine the spark suppression of the Cat 9L diesel is already there for mining so it's a no brainer. I wish you guys every success.
