What's needed more than a revolution in accordion is a revolution in free reed instruments in general. Melodicas and their cousins, with their affordability and portability, have a lot of potential. Especially finer ones like the vibrandoneon and mylodica. Bandoneons and the various concertinas have a certain own appeal over accordions; they're usually more portable, easier to work with, and I believe, cooler looking. Standard accordions were on the front end of the "lameness" assault, but concertinas were thankfully spared (probably because they're even less known than accordions). Eastern free reeds like the khene, sheng, and sho are pretty gnarly and I'd love to see them penetrate modern music. And there are tons of oddities like the goofus, harmonicor, accordina, claviola, and fluta that are woefully under-explored. Harmonicas are everywhere, but it'd be nice for bass, trumpet, and chromatic harmonicas to show up more often. Where accordions lend themselves to certain styles given their devotion of half of the instrument to pre-assembled chords, other free reed instruments' lack of dedicated chords make them more prone to taking up parts usually reserved for other instruments--ironically, limiting buttons can make a player feel more free to explore different styles.

The instrument is not the problem. Societies in North America are declining rapidly. So much that interests in and arts and music has decayed. Besides of that, people on this continent only knows what they see on their TV screens or advertisements. They don't know what accordions or that other free reed instruments even exists, and they have no culture to learn that from. That's a rotten society whose only common ethnic identity is defined by the mass media and a culture of consumerism.

Accordions will never die, dont know about usa, but in balkans, still the most popular instrument, great speech though! Accordions forever!

More popular than the guitar, piano and violin? Wow!

As a professional accordionists, a lot of this resonates with me.I'm lucky to have at least a double life in traditional Irish music where it's still fully accepted. But I do play some jazz etc. not too many gigs coming my way in that dept lately ha.

That's definitely true what he's saying about playing popular songs on the accordion to get people interested. When I play at gigs or busk, by far I get the most attention from people when I do songs like that (unless it's an older person who wants that old-timey beer barrel kinda sound). I have to say that skinned accordion is pretty awesome.I don't even want to know how much it costs.

When I started recovery in 12 step programs(scratched out Alcohol and put EVERYTHING) I picked up my first functional accordion Boyd's Music in Little Rock because I needed more than AA or GOD could provide and NEVER LOOKED BACK. Love the book 'Accordion Crimes'. Behind in practicing and playing at Nursing Homes.

All these comments do not take into cosideration that Cory is a master of ANY style and sound. He chooses to blaze a trail rather than play the normal stuff all the time. I have done shows with him playing standards and he is very skilled as well as tasteful. He is a master of the walking jazz bass using the stradella system. Here's to you Cory from John R. in Branson! Keep pushing the envelope!

Couldn't he do what he's doing with a keyboard?

I skinned my Hohner Atlantic IV deluxe about 20 years ago, wanted deep purples' accordion, now it's purple and gold with green bellows, play rock, jazz, zydeco and all kinds of music on it, looks good, and its still an elegant instrument. In my humble opinion the accordion in the USA is a casualty of the cold war: the accordion was a very popular instrument behind the iron curtain, oficial revolution instrument in the USSR, and still is very popular in China and North Korea (they have marching bands of the darned thing :) ), anything strongly associated with them was stigmatized. The cold war started in earnest at the mid 50's ended in 90's (kinda), coincides with accordions poor USA image period. It was very convenient to picture the instrument as awkward (not hard to do), clumsy, and specially foreign.

first of all Cory you hit it right on the head when you said we got to do something different and changing the color and all the beeps and whistles are an avenue to explore ,good for you i wish i could play as well as you i share this same feeling about bringing the accordion back into flavor and iv seen that the more unapproachable we play the harder it is to get people interested we have to learn how not to scare other instruments away from us by dominating the role we play primarily when it comes to playing in a band .Playing the accordion the way we've been taught dose not leave enough room in the song for other instruments to join in.we also have to write new music for our era and not rely on the past although they were great songs we need a Jimmy Hendericks and a Elvis Presly of the accordion world which you have come very close to doing . i encourage all accordion players to take what they have learned in all those lessons and grab some musical friends and start creating a new sound for us which will take all the instruments working together and not being dominated by just one instrument .I always here that must be really hard to learn how to play ,but i feel its all relative to who you are as a musician . you are now on my list of heroes for your skill and your commitment to such a cause as the one you are undertaking .Its easy to be negative about something we don't understand .llama

I think it really needs a price revolution in order to attract new players. What I mean is, a piano accordion of "decent enough" quality in the $300-500 range with at least a modest Stradella bass system instead of 8 or 12 bass buttons. Here are the pricing options I've noticed to be ubiquitous as I've scoured the internet... $50 or less for a new toy accordion. Then it jumps to $400 (±$50) for a vintage used piano accordion that "needs work". $750 and up for a new Hohner diatonic button accordion. Over $1000 for a new piano accordion (USUALLY is also quite limited in regards to keyboard size, number of Stradella buttons, and/or registers). $2500 and up for a new or used/refurbished full size piano accordion. I realize that there are multiple factors which go into the price of a rather complexly built instrument, but I'm just saying the fact of the matter is there's hardly a "quality yet economical" model of piano accordion to be found that's enticing for a prospective beginner to "take the plunge" to buy. As for cultural appeal, I've received nothing but positive feedback from my friends about it. People enjoy the sound of it. It's so old that it's new again. The world of guitarists is so saturated that few people are impressed with guitar anymore - but ACCORDION - that's unique and interesting and a rare treat!

I really appreciate his speech about the instrument but I don't think the accordion needs to change at all I feel like there is some overcompensation for making it not sound old; but I don't think it needs to be electric, have lights on it, be newly shaped or dance-compatible to play different and new or original melodies. That's all in the basis of the instrument itself and it's a beautiful instrument that already can convey almost any tune or ambiance as it is (in my opinion, at least.) I feel like a revolution would hurt it's image if anything; but I can still respect this guy's point of view and it's pretty cool what he has done just maybe not my taste might be nice to see him play the keyboard rather

I think I remember that part of life! Thank you as you told it, you made me feel better! My dad played accordion b4 & after WWII. Lots of gigs w/double engagements on the weekends. I had to play too so he bought me my own ACCORDIANA till I took over his EXCELSIOR later on and HAD to play like him. Then ED SULLIVAN introduced the BEATLES and thing took a nosedive the next few years plus the ARMY draft. So YEAH, hearing YOU has special meaning to me. Thank you & God bless always!!! Henry

Rildon Alves - Unfortunately, not many people outside of Latin America know that the accordion is very popular in places like Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Panama, Mexico, etc. The only style most people know is Tango.

in mexico and colombia (ESPECIALLY mexico) the accordion is still quite popular in certain popular genres. in mexico the accordion is part of a fast selling genre.

Terrific presentation, Cory. I have shared this link with all of my CordeenMan News subscribers all over the world as I think they all should view this. You know that I am rooting for you to be successful in all your accordion endeavors.

I understand Mr. P. Contacting fiber optic fabric companies to redesign bellows with glowing elements. Or some kind of wireless LED through induction. That's where I am today. I've already heard the , " why bother " and the " we would've done it if it could be done " The end goal is one of the guys from InfectedMushroom to perform with a glowing accordion on stage MFDoom Accordion Remix with a chromatic scale free bass . My idea of the Accordion Final Form.

I applaud all your effort. I know many may have not recognized the distortion sounds the keyboard were making thinking it was a noisy keyboard. The accordion is coming back on it's own merit. Mr. Pesaturo is obviously very technically skilled, but perhaps in his quest for people pleasing has become utterly tasteless. And I also vouch for those complaining about digital accordions. I don't care for any of the digital instruments in general. The action and sound are too inorganic. It was an electric keyboard that sent me running to the accordion (couldn't find a portable grand piano). His analysis on how it went out of style and stayed out, I imagine, is spot on.

I only say this as simply a matter of personal taste. Despite it's versatility I feel that the digital box has a long way to go b4 it has the rich tones of a reed accordion. Why Roland & other makers didn't make an alternative foot pedal kind of arrangement for the couplets while they were at it, might have been an idea for accordion development, then ones fingers would never have to leave the keyboard. The one electronic variant of the traditional acoustic accordion that had it all in that respect was the Cordovox. It was a lot of equipment to tote around, but what it could do was amazing. I have had the pleasure of working with a couple of bands that used it as a major part of their sound. What ever happened to this great instrument? I haven't seen one in ages.

I finally had an opportunity to play two Roland V accordions. VERY DISAPPOINTING. I definitely learned I did not want to spend the money on one. it just does not have the feel of a reeded accordion. The bellows is lacking in any expression. I have a digital keyboard, might as well play that if I want the electronics. Roland also charges a LOT more for the same type electronics just because it is in an accordion format. The electronics of an FR-8X in a keyboard format would likely be only around $2k.

If you are looking for the Roland to be like an Acoustic, you're going for the wrong reasons. You wouldn't go looking to buy a car a Land Rover or Hummer if you wanted a fast sports car.

Seems to me like switching to a button accordion and losing some basses you don't need because they're duplicate would make it way more portable, lighter, and less of a big thing to have in front of you.

KingSnowman Learning, appreciating and flaunting it here. We can do this! Sick of people seeing them as a gimmick, when I started writing songs on piano, they were all written for accordion! It was the only instrument I could hear playing them. So glad I have one now, my right hand isn't that agile but practicing almost every day (neighbours love it :P) UNITE!

They should show someone playing some electric guitar rock songs on an acoustic accordion and make it sound loud and wicked and awesome...

The plastic aspect of the accordion does not help with its image. In my parent's and grandparent's time, plastic was new, and innovative and modern. To the young people, plastic is the bane of their existence. Plastic equates environmental disaster. Plastic is the curse which the older generations have bestowed on the younger generation. No young person looks at an instrument of any kind that is made of plastic and says "I need to look at that more closely". People are no longer attracted to plastic. Every time I am with someone who sees an all wood accordion for the first time, they stop and look at it and feel it and are attracted to it. Also, in the same light, a digital keyboard or digital accordion or any digital instrument is not such an exciting thing to the currently young generation. To people who grew up from the youngest age with smart phones and an easy free access to digital midi sounds on the computer, digital sounds are just not seen as anything special. More people play the violin now, than all the people who have played the violin previously, combined. More people play baroque "period music" on authentic instruments now then ever before. In a digital world, people crave the organic. A traditional accordion is a breathing instrument, it has a soul. My midi keyboard has no soul.

Not elvis, elvis played accordion although it wasn’t his instrument of choice. The Beatles killed the accordion (In the US and Western Europe)

Bummed that the accordion of the future never materialized. Even the digital ones are quite heavy. It's time to get that weight down and eliminate the box shape.

Ugh. I despise midi accordions. I feel like because the midi accordion is unpopular even amongst accordionists, an already niche market, Roland hasn't updated any of the sound samples in it since the 90's, or early 2000's at the latest. You aren't gaining anything having all those sounds. An acoustic accordion is already a band in a box, which, in my opinion, the Italians, and the other accordion-producing countries got right the first time. ...but if you like the sound of late 90's keyboards, by all means, the midi accordion is the instrument for you! To use his own quote, in further defense of the acoustic accordion, "There is so much it can do, if you pay attention."

He’s a very skilled player but he’s missing the point. The accordion lost popularity because the guitar with its new music style “rock” became popular. For the accordion to make a comeback there has to be a NEW style of accordion music that speaks to the young generation. The music should be simple, catchy, and contain lyrics about love, drugs, etc. AND the accordion must be the main instrument. The general public, especially the young people, do not want to listen to century old accordion styles. Covers of modern music is not a solution, even if the accordion lights up and has midi sounds (which btw, sound pretty bad imo)

Every effort to promote the magnificent accordion instrument is positive. Your playing skills are great but unfortunately the sound of this particular instrument has nothing to do with real accordion music. In my ears it sounds like a poor quality keyboard.

It’s time for accordion players to arrive at one painful point, this is my own personal observation after years of lessons, and trying to sell the instrument to an army of americana playing music mates, the accordion can be the most boring sound ever to be inflicted on human ears. Ive heard almost every genre of music played on the accordion and no matter the layering of adornment or fugue of exposition, you’ve got about ten minutes. After that it’s over, play the damn Beer Barrel Polka and be done with it. However, and again this is my own Welk/ Floren/Contino saturated opinion, if you want to find a place in the music where no one else is playing then thats a different and way more satisfying story story. In that case there is no substitute. Nothing fills a hole better. Thanks.

what have you heard?

There seems to be something wrong with the speakers - the right canal is dead (no, it has nothing to do with my headphones, they are working first class). This pseudo-modern disco sounds are awful, though, I generally have great symypathies for the accordeon music.

There is also Cory a wrong belief that old music, of what many people say old fashion music, is not valid!! And is not enjoyable, outdated... two terms here the are part of this pseudophilosophie: coolness and fashion. The accordeon is part of that music of the old times, but i dont see a valid argument to say, cool and fashion music is better than the old one, and cool and fashion music is related with cool people. Really i see more artistic beauty, in old music than todays music... today music ... i dont have words for it, young people lack of critical and analitical thinking and they dont have refined taste anymore.

Let’s make the accordion cool by… making it as cheesy as possible, ok? Personally I think that the only way accordions are going to become relevant again is if people become increasingly interested in older songs and composition styles. Unfortunately playing pop and rock will never work for the accordion and you have just proved it. All of these “improvements” demonstrate exactly why the accordion is mocked in a modern landscape, it just becomes kitschy and out of place. So long as you place the value of the accordion in the hands of pop/rock fans you will inevitably find it worthless. But if you realize that the accordion is perfectly suited for the compositions of older genres and utilize it as such, you will find the accordion invaluable.

Is it only me, or his key mechanics makes way too much noise for a pro instrument?

just listen to Caucasian acordeon music (Georgian ,charkasian,chechen) if you are an acordeonist you will quit the acordeon after hearing them because you wasted your time on the boring European acordeon with the boring classical/jazz music
