Nice approach. Slow practice is way underrated, if not despised. Playing a piece comfortably at half tempo and the speed will find it's way. It's nice to encourage that.

Elijah Kim 김기성 As funny as that is, especially with the piss poor performance of “ “Flight of the Bumblebee” “ that Ben Lee gave right after asserting that, there is truth to what he said He said “If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly.” Keyword: can. Meaning if you can play it at all, then you can play it a bit faster. If you can play it a bit faster, then you can play it a bit faster than even that. And so on and so on, eventually you can play it much faster than you originally could, which is exactly what he said in that interview Just make sure you can actually play it _well_ before pushing past your limits too quickly, or you end up with a sacrilegious performance like his. My guess is he’s not a very patient guy. Of course, the faster you get also the harder it is to keep getting faster. In that sense there’s diminishing returns on the investment of time and energy put into it, as well as an ultimate biological limitation that can never be surpassed with any amount of practice or training as well as physical limitations of what the instrument is capable of

I never realized how helpful it is to hear a piece played slow until I tried to start learning a couple of etudes a few years ago. This Super Slow Series is an excellent idea, Cory! Unfortunately I actually do play two etudes but kind of rushed into full speed and now find certain parts I have forgotten which notes I'm playing and can only perform near full speed. It is quite pathetic, really. But at least I have fun playing them, I now I have resources like this to go back and rebuild.

It is not super slow, only that we are get used to listen to famous pianists playing it too fast. If you look at speed that Chopin wrote it is almost the right speed. But today all mainstream pianists just play it as fast as possible and it sounds bad. There is no accents in left hand and it seems blurry. I prefer it slower. Thanks for video.

Thank you for this. I have just started learning this piece and have found your video very helpful. My piano teacher used to play a piece at 'normal' speed for me to see if I liked it first, she said if you don't like the music it will be ten times harder to learn because you won't feel motivated. If I liked the piece, she would then take sections and play them at around half speed to 'fix things in my head'. I am going to use this video to work on this piece in the same way. Lovely piano you have by the way, but I am also a trained piano tuner now and felt an itching to fine tune your ringing unisons; just my feeling, not a criticism at all. Thanks again.

I disagree. What about a tempo about midway between this and the extremely fast tempo played by most? Why must everything be in the 60s or 70s bpm as Wim believes? I personally believe a middle ground tempo is best.

@@BachScholar Do not mistake me as a crook. I would like to be crystal clear about this matter. What I believe (NOT NOT NOT BLAMING) is that after rock and all other types of genera have emerged, it might have changed how we see towards music. Fast has become a way for expression is MAY be what we have implicit in our mind. I remember one of Liszt quote "no matter how fast or slow you play, I want to hear the canter of horses" I think this shows he was for whole beat. This also MIGHT be possible. And coming to Mr. Winters in this he suggestively proves kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYSr0aioire6eLg.html in this video. Although hammerklavier but that will follow for all. if yet you suggest for half beat, then please do share some thing concrete to stand against Mr. Winters. Very curious about that.

  • @Monogrammaton

Well, here's one data point. I'm a piano novice. I've never looked anything up about how to play piano, never had a lesson -- only some self-taught stuff remembered from my childhood. I decided to try the hardest looking song that I knew of, Chopin's Revolutionary, because it seemed so cool -- but as an experiment I eschewed all of the book learning. I only learned it by viewing the Rousseau KZread channel's performance of it, watching where the hands went in slow motion, and playing along. As long as the fingerings were all the same. My idea was that if you can feel your own muscles playing piano, through that experience alone you can learn some things about piano. It worked. I can play the first half of the song at almost full tempo with no mistakes. Slowing down was of course necessary to progress to that point from scratch, but a couple other drills helped as well, like playing one handed only, or varying which beats are emphasized or which beats are played quickly. It took a couple months of intermittent short practice sessions but at no point did I stop to read up.

You just have to speed it up progressively. Every time you play it at a high speed then you have to play it at half the speed, because if you don't do you will start to miss some notes at the high speed. Also a good idea is to play the piece with the rhythmic ways(you can find them in the Hanon).Good Luck!

Another video specifically discusses how to play that part without getting tired. The key is a series of rolling swinging motions; eventually you learn to let your swinging arms do all the work there. The video is a tutorial by Graham Fitch on the channel "Pianist Magazine". You are right!!! There is no need of FAST very nice this. As often slow and one can follow, alsa Bach often sooo fast, that even experts loose to follow

Thank you this is very helpful to perfect what I already know about this piece. It's good that there's a slow version so I can pick out the sounds of the left hand that's usually too soft or fast to distinguish. :)

if you put it at x2 speed will hear the piece on the rigth tempo. pd : at x2 the piano sounds detuned.

Sounds just as lovely slowed down, I think, if anything, it has its own unique beauty. The decay of the notes has time to linger, to saturate, trading some vigor, but I would say, none of the intensity.

BachScholar it's really untraditional and also the etude is supposed to strengthen your left hand, also in faster tempo it the it isn't practical. But hey you are probably more experienced than me so I hope there is some logical explanation why you play it like that.

Because I like to, that's all. I can also play it with just the LH, so it doesn't really matter in the large scheme of things.

Ughh all those chromatics and double sharps and chords intended for hands bigger than mine! This is the hardest thing I have ever played in 9 years of piano. Every time I sit down to practice I just get so discouraged that I don’t make any real progress.
