The thing is with this stuff is that it loses alot of it's impact absorbing properties when it's molded or baked. It becomes just like any other foam protector.

Head concussion come from the drastic change of momentum when another player hits... this causes the brain to accelerate in another direction for which they hit the inner skull... they are not mainly caused by strait blows to the head.... so In my mind the problem still there

A helmet doesn’t stop the brain from smashing it self from side to side inside the skull.

It increases the deceleration time. This means that the brain has 2 seconds to move, instead of 1. The strain placed upon the brain is spread out over 2 seconds instead of 1. It's the same logic behind crush spots on cars. Taking longer to decelerate will lessen the damaged sustained.

This only protects your skull from cracking. Head trauma is not just damaging your skull it’s is also the damage that is caused to the brain. Even if you have a ton of padding, when you have a high impact injury, your brain still moves and hits your skull which can still cause bruising and concussions.

I love how during the demonstration the chick hits it twice but hits her hand on the second try and that is the one they slow down and play throughout.

If they turned these into toe pads for ballet dancers I'd buy them. My current toe pads dont absorb much of the shock so my feet wear out a little towards the end of ballet classes. Or they just go numb. This looks like it would make a good, lightweight protector for the toes, in points shoes. Especially for dancers that mold their pads or just wanna feel the floor more.

Don't you want the opposite reaction? when it's hit hard don't you want it to ease your head like a pillow not stiffen like a brick. That won't decrease the rattling of the brain. It will mold to your head within the helmet and feel "soft" but right when high velocity strikes it turns hard. It's basically saying, here's this block of concrete perfectly formed for your head type don't worry it's protecting the your brain. It won't cushion or soften anything. It forms to your head and mimics the skull on impact thus damaging what you thought you were protecting. Am I crazy?

The helmet application is clickbait. For a helmet, you want to slow the deceleration, not have the lining of your helmet turn solid on impact (ouch). The real advantage is that it remains flexible and conformant in normal conditions. Maybe shoulder or other body pads that would be comfortable to wear (flexible), but turn hard if impacted. My guess is that this material is also relatively heavy compared to styrofoam or carbon fiber/high impact plastic.

The problem is not the protection, it is the adverse disruption that protective technologies have had on the evolution of high-impact sports such as American Football. More padding = higher force hits and internal injuries. Protective technologies are of course not to blame, but it would be best to think of them as only half of the solution, the other half being the scrutinizing of the fundamental culture underlying these sports as well as the need for improved medical understanding of internal injuries such as concussions.

That's an ahistorical claim, look at the history of the sport and rule changes. American football with less padding resembled more present day rugby in terms of tackling.

With much less viewers on live TV and much less money on the line for everyone involved in the production. Take out helmets and of course you're going to see less concussions and less big hits/exciting moments, but that comes at the cost of millions of dollars as fans and contributors move on to the next sport.

The inventor of this goo was on "Dragon's den" (Shark tank equivalent in the UK). I'm surprised it took this long for this material to be used as its been a fair few years

Want to stop head on head collisions then test and make the goo stronger to stop the impact of a sledge hammer then ypu have succeeded.use air pockets to use as a shock to reduce movement to the brain and keep the brain stabalized.

Need this for army helmets. The one we use now are hard and gives me a headache after hours of wearing and soreness on back of my head.

It’s a great product and it can reduce it but still there’s no way to full protect your brain because it’s not connected to anything and when you get hit in the head your brain just moves everywhere and could be still dangerous

It actually doesn't work as head protection in contact sports IMO. In American football, rugby, MMA, etc it is very rare for the skull itself to get damaged. What causes brain injuries is the acceleration of the skull resulting in the brain hitting its inner walls.

Yhitte, it isn’t just your opinion. It has been proven. Helmets and other protective gear may prevent wounds like cuts, bruising and broken bones, but they do virtually nothing for brain trauma.

It may reduce the shock of an impact but what really damages football players are the accelerations caused by big hits which rattle their brains around, not much you can do about that with padding.

The brain moving inside the skull is caused by the shock of the hit and the damage is cause by the brain which is freely moving hitting the skull when it settles. When the impact is over, the skull is allowed to move into the goo lined in the helmet, making it a slower impact for the brain.

As soon as you can put the foam inside the skull and prevent a players brain from hitting the skull, I’ll be impressed. The act of running as fast as you can and then having your head pushed the opposite direction in a split second means your brain moves. The foam is irrelevant.

I remember seeing this stuff in tech 21 phones cases a few years back.

I need a few gallons of that.

My son has this in his CCM helmet. The problem is the product is very expensive at the moment. I have the luxury of being able to afford this and giving my son the best head protection in the game. Others do not have this. Should be subsidised into going into all models of helmets.

Armoured Outlaw there's research that the helmets actually cause more shock because they are so tough. So the same thing that protects them, harms them. I don;t fully know but American football is more dangerous even though rugby has less protection

I get their idea. But I agree with you, when something hits it... or a ball bounces on it, then it stops instantly. If your head is inside a helmet with that in there, and you go flying into a wall, it's going to instantly stop your head moving in that direction causing your brain to practically slam against your skull. Why do you guys think stunt actors fall on to incredibly soft foam. Imagine diving on this shit... ouch

I’m not fully understanding the use of it. They’re changing the dynamics of how it reacts when they pour it in a mold and add their agent to it to make it foam. I’ve torn this stuff apart before and it’s a completely different substance that’s in the pad then what the goo is. No if they poured the goo into a substrate then added a skin to it, that would sort of make sense but all they’ve done is create an orange foam that acts nothing like a non-Newtonian substance

Read About Page Yeah they're both Non-Newtonian Fluids, but this stuff seems to be pretty different in every other regard. It appears as more of a slime/gel/foam like structure while oobleck is just a mess that'll melt everywhere the second it's not being hit. Like this seems to be able to able some structure to it.

D30 is a common type of armor used by motorcyclists. It dramatically reduces the chances of blunt force injuries as well as spinal injuries.
