Its too bad that you guys didnt mention any of the actually great stuff about Utena, such as the fact that Ikuhara is a great fan of David Lynch, and it shows in the surreal nature of the show; or that the music composer, J. A. Seazer was an all time favorite of Ikuhara, and since Ikuhara funded this project himself, making it a very risky project as well, he wanted J A Seazer to compose all the duel songs. Dont get me wrong, im SUPER glad you made an episode on Utena. It bately gets any recognition. But you focused on really bland things for this video

lol, since you said it, remember Lost Highway's car chase scene ("tell me you're gonna read the manual!")? Okay, now watch it on youtube. Pay attention to the tone of the scene and SPECIALLY the music. Then, just remember the Akio Car scene concept of Utena and the music theme of it. Awesome, right? From the little research I did I could see just one more person besides me who noticed that in the internet. Really cool to see Lynch's influence in a manner so straight forward on Ikuhara's work.

80s-90s Americanization op Depending on the anime, they just use names that begin with the first letter of the original name. Saionji - Kevin was totally random though.

Kevin is my favourite! That name makes Saionji sound like the biggest jobber ever.

I love hearing about Utena whenever I can. It's a classic that a lot of people don't hear about or seem to be put off by it. Also, Ikuhara loves yuri in his work a lot, so when I first learned about his idea for Sailor Moon it didn't surprise me.

Old-school? It's so strange to think of Utena as old-school. I feel so old. I had to buy recorded fan-subbed VHS tapes because, at the time, we weren't getting the full series.

Ah, my favorite character in the series: Pazzolini

Revolutionary Girl Utena is truly a revolutionary anime (pun intended). It really was the beginning of the creation of various shoujo anime that empowers femininity and crossing transgender lines of visualizing how powerful female characters should be. Sailor Moon maybe the queen of shoujo magical girl anime, but this anime is the animated equivalent of Madonna's Express Yourself music video. Also, you should also point out in this video that the legendary Japanese voice actress for Utena, Tomoko Kawakami, who died of ovarian cancer is seen as a tragic lost for the franchise and possibly making a harder task for reviving the series in the future.

You are right about not many people know this story. She died few years ago, though few folks from outside of Japan knows that she died. This due to before the 2010s, the anime and cartoon industry aren't much caring to report any news or mentions of voice actors unlike their live action counterparts and also, we don't have efficient social media platforms back then. Nowadays, we're giving these stars behind our favourite characters more gratitude and exposure for the fans of their works in anime conventions. It's a sign of progress that the public starting to recognise entertainment media that does not think cartoons and anime are fads for the juvenile.

This is an anime I just finished watching in its entirety this year. I really enjoyed it, even as a lot of it still doesn't make sense to me. It's strange how Ikuhara meant this to be a "quintessential shoujo anime", and yet so little shoujo anime made since then actually succeeds in capturing the good points Utena had. Of course, that could just be me.

loved this episode. I really like ones that are insightful and the production of shows and not just stuff like "this character was named after the author's dog"

I actually saw tree episodes of "Ursula" in Mexico before it was cancelled

Man, I want so much a retransmission of the series. To add, part of the Mexican dubbing cast claimed that they dubbed the entire series but the broadcast stopped before the final arc.

Actually, Utena with gun duels would be an interesting thing to do a cosplay skit of. You can have Anthy distribute the guns to the duelists, have them be accompanied by a second. Juri could shoot in the air when she goes against Utena. This would make for shorter duels but it sound cool!

Great episode. I'll probably never see this anime, but it seems like an amazing and thought-provoking work. Older Japanese animation (from the late 80s & 90s) fascinate me, as does the notion of "being a fan of anime before the internet."

Bonus Utena fun fact: Chiho Saito, who worked on the manga, is(or at least was) a big ol' homophobe who threatened to walk out of the project if Anthy and Utena were shown as openly queer.

Did You Know Anime That'll make you an exception to the rule, then, sadly. It's kind of messed up that I'm making video reviews of anime here in the UK, and I had to become conversant in Italian copyright law just to defend my content from fraudulent claims.
