Great review. Just bought and installed (2) SVS SB2000's and absolutely love them. Your data and detail in review is why people ask for you to review speakers & subs that can find other reviews on. It's your credibility and trust they look for. You are one of the best out there because you blend data, with real world application.

I just purchased my 4th Klipsch SPL-120 for my 14' x 20' x 8' living room home theater. The previous 3 were 1/4 wall placed with two up front and one in back. This new one has to be right-rear corner loaded due to furniture. My good friend with two PB-1000 in a room slightly smaller likes my bass with three subs much better than his. We both can't understand the hate my subs get from the community. The fact all four cost me a total of $1700 USD is awesome. Anyways...I REALLY wanted to go to two RSLs instead of 4 Klipsch but I live in Europe. Seeing this review makes me jealous even though what I have is great by objective (REW measured and balanced) and subjective standards. The thirst for "new and better" never ends it seems. Thanks for all the work you do!

Perfect timing! I've been digging through all the available data and honestly the 12s competes squarely with the SVS PB-2000 Pro, which is quite a bit more expensive, especially for 2. Still would love to see a photo of the 2 of them right next to each other. SVS is a bit narrower, but is longer... RSL is taller, wider and more 'square' while SVS has rounded corners. Both are right at the limit of what will physically fit in my room, and I certainly don't want to have to return either!

In the back of my mind I'm always wondering how much of a difference on results a different mic would make. Haven't heard anyone bring this up either.

I've really appreciated your tests on subs at multiple input voltages particularly with the (fairly prevalent) DSP controlled subwoofers. I've not seen anyone post this type of test. I think it's easy to assume that a subwoofer largely performs the same way at all volumes but (as your tests prove) this is not always the case. For those who use either automated or manual room correction, the change in frequency response based on input voltage very well will mean that a system which measures well at the testing volume might not be accurate at listening volumes. I tend to wonder how phase comes into play in these situations as well. Thanks for raising the bar on testing. Much appreciated.

Great review! You cover a lot of important information in a short amount of time. Some kind of outdoor impulse response would be an interesting comparison. That moving mass is great to get a response down to 16 Hertz but maybe not so great at reproducing a 50 hz fundamental kick drum. I have seen companies like REL use lightweight drivers that sacrifice low-end extension for less overshoot. But like you say the room may be a larger factor.

  • @DanielNilssonSe

Erin, regarding boundary compensation, I've used an old NHT 1259 DIY sealed box sub dropping off at around 30Hz, in two homes. By Swedish standards, normal sized living rooms. One with concrete walls (apartment), one with outside walls (wooden). Corner loaded, that sub delivered nicely, fairly linear, down to 15Hz, in both. It's a real thing, not just to be nice to neighbors (I was awful to them when in the apartment, it was fun having such a bass response.. :) A sub linear down to 20 would have been horrible for both installs, without DSP. I think that the compensation mode of the RSL would be sort of perfect for getting good results in many smaller living rooms. Happier neighbours as a bonus, not as the reason to use it.

  • @Audfile

    @Audfile

    5 ай бұрын

@Superman54 yes. I discovered a long time ago that subs sound better, off the floor, and they sound way way better, the higher you go. It's a bit of an ugly setup, I have 2 pairs of smaller subwoofers underneath them, that I no longer use. And I just happened to reach the right ear level height that way. My subs cone centers are dead ear level, left and right, to my sides and slightly behind. The BEST part of these RSL subs is the adjustable phase, it's not just a dumb switch. With a pair of them you can dial it in to be very flat, via just the phase controls. I have a ton of speakers but currently up front is a pair of LS50Metas on Orchard Audio monoblocks, and the RSL pair is pure magic honestly. Normally I am an upgrade FREAK, and the subs would have been gone by now. Should tell you something. They are great, and cheap! Probably the cheapest things in my system. Do *not* buy just one.

Interesting point about moving sub away from wall. I have 2 Polk PSW10's (one was free and one was cheap) and I am struggling with boominess. I have a MiniDSP2x4HD and I've EQ'd the sub to be pretty good (only -3 at 30hz), but it's still too ringy. I ended up just putting them right behind my head and it's ok but not quite there. I'm gonna try sealing the subs to see how that sounds and also eq'ing it to go down in db the lower it gets. Counterintuitive but the ringing must be stopped! :D I wanna reiterate how much of a beast you are, Erin. You are changing lives with the information you put out. Thanks!

When you go down an octave you need factor 10 the power, live you could say highs 10w, mids then 100w, low mid bass 1000w, Subbass then 10,000watts (open air, free field non array bass), basically the deeper you go the power output goes exponentially up, and when you really want linear down to 20Hz then you have to start moving lots of air

Great description. I have noticed that most subwoofers are rated up to 200Hz. And this one starts rolling off a bit at maybe 110hz to 200hz. I was wondering why they don’t play flatter up higher. Is it just the inductance of the voice coil? Or do they actually add an inductor to roll them off early. Or is it stiff surrounds?

  • @ErinsAudioCorner

Typically it’s inductance. The group delay doesn’t indicate any additional filtering above 100Hz.

"slow" loudspeakers and subwoofers is a function of how well the system handles transients. The settling time of the woofers. That's an objective measurement that can only be found in the impulse response of the subwoofer or loudspeaker. That being said, if you have zero acoustic treatment in your room and/or your DSP isn't doing anything to control reverb in your room (Trinnov Waveforming or Dirac ART), the impulse response of a sub (or loudspeaker) will be smeared (slowed). Some companies like Genelec and a few other companies who also produce active loudspeakers, designed their products to have that short impulse response through very carefully manufactured drivers and a maximally damped cabinet. Take Genelec's "The Ones" series. The impulse response of those speakers is darn near perfect. Genelec's subs are darn near perfect in their transient speed as well. All of that rambling aside, the transient speed of a system as a whole is dominated by the RT of a room. Only after you control the RT in your room can you actually be able to compare different loudspeakers/subs' transient speeds in "real world" use. That is unless..... you have a Klippell.

I'm not sure how hard this would be, but in future reviews of ported subs can you provide any insight into the SPL level at which the port starts to chuff or exhibits other noise? If a sub has a lot of port noise when squeezing out the last 5dB of output at a given frequency then in my opinion those last 5dBs aren't worth using in most cases.

I am running into an issue where 30hz and lower frequencies are just not time aligned with my mains. My mains are the revel ultima floor standing speakers, so they get pretty low, but it feels like my sub is always trailing behind the mains. Pulling sub forward 1 feet helps but it’s not ideal. I am thinking about getting a Mini Dsp flex and a umik2 to help with integration, but if you can do a video on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.

i agree, but maybe not many uses dsp so he is following the common gear people have and makes videos about that. the big point of dsp is time delay for main speakers, so you do not have to move the subwoofer closer to time align it. if you get a dsp like the flex you get access to so much more also, powerful tool :) but then you do not need or want active subwoofer, tose have their own dsp and delay, some can bypass it. if you are interested i can write down some methods for subwoofer, and you do not need mic or any software, just an online tone generator.

If the size of the 12S is an issue I would strongly consider the RSL 10S as a viable alternative. It won’t the same performance as the 12S but it will hold its own, and the possibility of using 2 10s’ isn’t out of the picture. I actually have one of the original 10s subs in my 24x13x8 living room I have no need for a second sub.

I have a question for you. I have the martin logan motion 35 XTI, cambridge audio cxa61 and rel T9x(I've only had the sub a few days and can still return it). I'm mostly happy with this system except I can't play at high volumes without it sounding bright and fatiguing on many songs. Do you think it's the amp or the speakers? What would I have to change to get a more neutral presentation? I like transparency and detail but want to make a change that will prevent fatigue, not have overly accentuated treble and allow me to listen at higher volumes? Do I need floor standers? My listening space is big at 5000 cubic feet due to an open concept. I was looking at the Kef R3 Meta or Dynaudio evoke 20 if I stick with bookshelfs. I'm open to suggestions. If I change the amp I was thinking about audiolab. Thoughts?

what is your room treatment like? In some cases, room treatment can really help with this without having to change your setup. however, I would look at the measurements of your speakers and see if there seems to be a upper frequency bump in the response. EQ can help in both cases, but room treatment may be your best next step.

Hi Erin, I will repeat a comment which I recently dropped at an Audioholics YT posting because it totally fits w.r.t. your channel quality and also to the topic: „I really feel like your channel is one of very few sources which is providing relevant, helpful and objective data - so please, please keep on going that way! As for diving deeper in subwoofer measurements, one thing that still is a mystery to me is the ability of a sub to provide tactile slam and physical impact. The general opinion seems to be that this is just a matter of SPL / dynamic output capabilities. But, for example I am using 5 (five) SVS SB-2000 subwoofers in my small-sized, enclosed HT room. They are perfectly integrated with a 8-9db house curve, no dips/nulls and a very low decay time. My listening volume is around -12 to -10 (after calibration) on my Yamaha RX-A6A, there is no compression in the low end happing down to 20 Hz and I measured 110db at 10(!)Hz with REW RTA and peaks of around 120db with REW SPL meter with real movie material. Still, the tactile experience is much lower compared to a ported sub with the same driver size. I know that tactile experience is probably a very subjective thing, but perhaps this is a good reason for trying to find any kind of "objective measurement" because tactile/slam clearly this is something that the HT community is usually looking for in my opinion. Eager to hear your opinion on that one. Thanks for all your great reviews and best regards, Christian.“ 👍👍👍 for your efforts, Erin!

From what I understand the tactile slam comes from mid-bass output. As it happens mid-bass output is not a strength of this RSL 12S. Not bad, just underwhelming compared to the effortless low end capability. Why do you have 5 subs and what is their config in the room?

tactile bass is cone area, ports acts a small and delayed cone with huge excursion. and i recommend cross over subwoofers between 150 to 200hz. unless you got large main speakers. more subwoofers do not need to contribute to output but even out the response in the room at many listing positions, so useless unless you want just that. and forget about measure bass, you got to listen and tune the eq that way, online tone generator and do it that way. make it sound like 10hz is equally as loud at 100hz if you can. then the rest of the frequency band

im not impressed with mine at all. ive been trying to see if i have an issue w support. its not putting out anywhere near like other people say it does. which im almost thinking their opinion aka review is horrible. i fully expected it to shake everything and i really expected to feel it. my room is 15x18 w 9' ceilings. i can barely feel it at all for one. i also think its pretty weak tbh. i have a jbl soundbar w a 12" bluetooth sub that hits the same and i can actually feel it more in my chest. therefore it cant be the so called room which is just silly. RSL tried to blame my reciever to which i bought a new one. guess what same issue yet again. im assuming it may be the amp is bad perhaps. if that gets replaced and its the same then ill say if you want room shaking bass and you actually wanna feel it go w something else. ill keep the reciever and return the sub. once i return it i'll build my own subs. i planned on buying two of them. so glad i bought one to to try first though thats for sure. im hoping its simply an amp issue. if not i'll be done w peoples opinions or shall i say so called reviews. imo if youre reviewing a sub you should state the type of bass you like. then give an explanation of what you think is good bass. clearly opinions vary on whats heavy bass and whats not. in the end best thing i can say is you gotta test these yourself. i gotta admit im pretty pissed about the whole situation. id be lying if i said i wasnt. oh, the whole reason they wanted to blame the reciever is because my best friend upgraded and gave it to me. so theres that too

@@parkersgarage4216 From what I've heard, the 12S does not have a ton of mid-bass impact. It's more of a deep bass rumbler. Location can definitely play a role too. You may be sitting in a null. Building your own subs may not be an automatic fix. I'd try a second 12S. You can compare it to the first and the second should fix any bass nulls at the listening position. Try the phase switch I'm guessing your getting null cancellations, have you tried to play the subs without the mains to see if your getting the required spl, it could be possible that your mains are are connected in reverse causing the sub frequencies to cancel each other out with the mains. If you move around the room do you notice differences in base response? It's possible that the room may be causing this issue too as lower frequency tones have high a much higher frequency length so the sounds waves travel much further, thus the reason your hear it in the next room. Try reversing the direction of the subs or opposing them or do a sub crawl. Use a spectrum analyser with your mobile and play a frequency test tone to see if you have any dips in the response
