Reviewing The Koh-I-Noor Progresso Woodless Coloured Pencils - Better than Regular?

A woodless Coloured Pencil thats nothing but core? Sunshine what madness is this?!?!
Yes my lovely friends, today were looking at one of the strangest pencils I've had the pleasure of reviewing. The Koh-I-Noor Progresso Woodless Coloured Pencils, direct from the Czech Republic.
These are short, solid, dense pencils that are nothing but core (so yeah no woodern barrel). Retro stylings, a reputation for super saturation and very very vibrant pigmant are what I have heard about these pencils. Is this true and are they actually better than reguler pencils?
This is the Big Review where I take pencils (and art supplies) and throw a series of tests at them. Some scientific, some opinion based, but through out it all I'm trying to give you enough information that you can make your own mind. This is the Big Review!
The good, the bad AND the ugly you get to see it all as as we look at The woodless coloured Progresso Pencils from KohINoor.

21:35 - Test 3 - The Blending Test - How well do the Koh-I-Noor Progresso Coloured Pencils Blend?

Not sure if this of great interest, but a little bit about the history of the company Koh-I-Noor Hartmuth. They actually originate from Austria, where they were founded in 1790. In 1802 they developed and patented the making of graphite and clay pencil lead, the basis for making machine-made pencils. In 1938 Austria was forced to become a part of Nazi Germany, just like Czechoslovakia had. The owners of Koh-I-Noor decided to move their main production to Czechoslovakia in order to profit from the much cheaper production costs. After WW2 the company remained in Czechoslovakia, which was devided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia after the iron curtain fell in 1990. Koh-I-Noor is one of the best known Czech companies for the production of writing tools and art supplies with branches in Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Italy, Romania and Bulgaria. Wonderful and unique products at great prices - I really love them. A truly great artist grade coloring pencil is the "Koh-I-Noor Polycolor" with a range of 144 amazing colors, which come in different size sets (12 being the smallest, 144 the largest). They lay down and blend amazingly! Give them a try if you love drawing with colored pencils, but don't want to spend a fortune.

Interesting! Thank you for that, the history of where pencils came from is so fascinating! I took most of my history from it from the website (but did confuse the Czech Republic with Czechoslovakia unfortunately) but there wasn’t much available. I haven’t tried the Polycolor yet, but it’s definitely on my list☺️💜

For some *really* strange and niche Koh-i-Noor pencils, try the Tri-Tone (wood pencils) or "Magic" (both wood and woodless pencils in several formats) line: they're pencils with a mix of 3 colours in each pencil so as you lay colour it keeps changing. Some of the mixes are less surprising like lighter to darker greens or blues, some other mixes are more exotic like red-purple-black or grey-orange-red.

When you did the pressure gradient test I was thinking they probably leave behind a residue, then you said - they leave behind a residue. - I thought to myself they are probably similar to crayon, then you said they are similar to crayon. As you know I use crayons, and I did get a crayon vibe from your experiments, especially with how the white blended the colors. working with crayons I'm exceedingly delicate, I use crayola for light blending and Cra-Z-Art for heavier layering work. But I use a specialty paper which allows me to that isn't in production anymore. I'm interested if Koh-I-Noor Progresso makes that quality of paper.

I think you would like them! When I initially tested them one of my first thoughts was hmm Afterfauve would like these :P They were an interesting experience, might be worth checking out the paper options that might work with these. As the cold press I used on the drawing teat Friday was WAY too coarse.

I actually love these pencils. They’re in my travel kit. But I do wish that they came in a tin not a box. They are noisy when carried in a back pack so I’ve had to put them in a pencil case. Lots of fun with my staedtler fineliners in my sketchbook. Thanks for a fun and informative video.

Do you find they break when travelling a lot? Or do you just pad them a bit? The size of them would be perfect for travelling but I think with me they’d end up powdered after a few days 😂. Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed 💜

I like them a lot for some colouring books where the toothy paper works with them like a dream, but I keep them (on the desk) in one of the Derwent empty tins you can buy. The package they come in isn't the best. What I wish is that the regular, non-watercolor woodless pencils came in the same number of colors as the water-soluble version -- which I found rather underwhelming, the colors aren't the most vibrant.

Hii, Nice review! Well done! I also have this koh i noor progresso and i also might do a review about them sooner or later. From now i am still having fun using them and testing in Multiple ways.I bought them in a trip to Croatia and there they were surprisingly cheap for their quality. Your review is technical, you actually Talk about the most important topics we should consider when chosing a pencil color. Very complete, well done for that! I would add something to this review, once on my tests i am not that technical- testing them in a colorful paper (example Kraft). They are truly amazing and actually pop comparatively to other pencil colors. I think their potencial is in this and in the fact that the pencil is woodless (and you can use similarly to pastels or charcoal ) - i think you referred this last One. The way they blend, is different from other brands - for example, in the case of caran d'ache luminance or on the case of bruynzeel, the colors really blend and transform In other color - you really get green from mixing blue with Yellow. With progresso blending is not that smooth, but it works somehow. I really love to work with them - a thing that i dont like that much in them is the color selection - i would expect to have more difference between the light blue/green to the dark blue/green. But white helps a lot getting different Shades. They are amazing! Try them on different paper 🙂

Thankyou! I’m glad you enjoyed it ☺️. Yes it is a shame they don’t have more colours available, a bit of variation would be great but I guess that’s the trade off we have for such a small kit

True, but it depends what your doing with them. I did a small art piece for them (on my instagram if you want to see) of a royal frog and to be fair it came out fairly nice. Details obviously weren’t the strong suit forthem but they were vibrant and poppy

Well if your sharpening them to have a constant fine point then yes, but one of the main benefits of woodless pencils is you have a much wider surface area to draw or color with. That bigger flatter edge also has sharp(ish) sides which is another technique and tool you can use!

I sometimes had weird stuff happen like that when I used to upload videos. I found I could catch 99% of the issues by uploading, looking at a few parts of the video for faults, and then posting if all was fine. My guess here is that your ISP throttled back your speed and quality due to high demand. The other main issues that sometimes pop up are errors with the SD card, errors in transfer from the SD card to computer, and issues with KZread processing@@StuffBySunshine

Oh it’s def 4K in the initial render. I deleted a previous render and reuploaded a few hrs ago. I’d set the release time at the time it claimed to be finished processing that 4K. Apparently KZread lies! I’ll give it a bit longer and see how it goes, just sucks for people who jump on with the initial release!

KZread is built for US internet. I bet the issue is the terrible quality of Aussie internet - Sadly Australia has worse internet than some third world countries. It's been a shock for me to readjust to the awful internet here, after a decade of living in Japan and the USA.@@StuffBySunshine
