I just found your channel. I’m in the hospital dealing with disability for the first time. I lost the use of my legs three weeks ago due to spinal compression caused by the spread of cancer. I have to say, watching your content has been an inspiration today. I’m extremely early into this journey but I’m hopeful. Thanks for what you do.

Mynor S it’s a day to day thing right now. I try to stay positive, sometimes I go completely negative but find my way back. It’s a struggle, for sure. I’m getting better at moving around and getting in and out of the chair. I want some independence back in my life so that drives me. How are you coping with this?

Don’t look back, there will be limitations but it’s all about your attitude life keeps on going just in a different way. I’ve Been on a wheelchair for 20 years and have lived a normal live doing everything except walking.

Hi there, I’m 18 yrs old and lost the use of my legs due to a severed spinal cord from a bike accident, I remember exactly how it was in hospital and it was a rough time, but things do get easier and you find new ways to go through life.

I was born with Spina-Bifida and received my first wheelchair when I was about 5 or 6 years old, it was this heavy (maybe steel) wheelchair that I was barely able to maneuver on my own. It wasn't until a few years later that I finally received my first lightweight, rigid frame chair that I was able to "customize" which really only meant picking a frame color. At some point, people asked what my wheelchair cost, and I would say 10 to 15 grand and people would look at me with this surprised look on their faces.

@@ilichiregius2884 I've found that if I don't wear gloves my hands get cracks that take weeks to heal. Gloves are my savior!

It's awesome to see someone who is in a chair and can also walk a little. I am not alone!

Only just discovered you and am really glad I did. My 10 year old daughter is a wheelchair user and you've given me lots of ideas that she's probably a bit young to think of. Will keep watching. Thanks so much for your time.

First off congrats on your new chair! However, you seem to have a lot of new chair owners comment on your videos. You did mention this chair was only for seasoned users which I was glad you stated, a new user should always start with an adjustable chair. The only thing that bothered me is that you never mentioned that most insurance companies will not pay for this type of custom made chairs so unless you have $10,000 plus, you can’t get a chair like this. I’ve been in a chair for 29 years now. I live out in the country and put a lot of wear and tear on my chairs so although I would love to get a chair like this....I will stuck with my Ti-Lite that is covered by insurance. I just think new users need to know there are lots of awesome equipment out there, but insurance will limit what they pay for, but you can still get a good chair that fits as long as you have a proper seating clinic. I get my seating clinics done at Shepherd and the same guy has done mine for the 29 years I’ve been in a chair...so he knows me and listens to my needs. Please don’t take this message the wrong way, I love your videos just was bothered they you didn’t mention that this chair would be paid out of pocket unless you have amazing insurance!

I find it kind of funny how you know exactly what you want out of a wheelchair. I've been using a wheelchair every day for over 20 years and I still doubt I would know what I want out of a chair with at least having options to choose from. I don't think I could be like "Oh, I don't like this thing about my chair, can we do this other thing instead". Maybe it's because I don't have a choice other than a list of frame styles and colors with my current wheelchair providers so I don't really have a clue what could be changed to make things easier on myself.

The perfect wheelchair is the wheelchair that fits YOU and YOUR needs and lifestyle! My current wheelchair is as close to my perfect as I’ve had this far, I have a Panthera U3 chair and sis keep the push handles on it (comes as standard unless you ask to have them off) but did have the anti tippers removed as I haven’t needed any for over 6,5 years now. The reason I kept the push handles is because I only have a 30cm backrest (roughly 12 inches) and I have wedges on my backrest for better support (more lightweight than going with a rigid backrest) and I am ambulatory so having the push handles on enables me to walk with the chair without having to bend my back, it’s especially helpful if I need to take the chair up or down stairs as I can then do that as well with a straight back. The bonus of it being easier for anyone helping me is there as well of course, but 99.9% of the time the push handles are there for me as I am an independent wheelchair user who very very rarely needs a push from anyone. My side guards are plastic but with a more rubbery top so I can push down on the top of the side guards to raise myself to move in my chair or just take pressure off my bum for a second, I can also push down on the side guards while holding the push rims with my fingers to slow down more effectively or steer while going down a ramp or slope. The design is also there to help people who do side transfers as you can sit a bit on the side guards without hurting yourself (compared to a hard plastic or other hard material) and the side guard is fitted in a way where it has attachment both on the seat and backrest to be very stable yet easy to remove if needing to fold backrest to take the chair into car. The design and choice of materials are just absolute gold for a wheelchair user! But then again, the guy behind Panthera is a T5 para and long time Paralympic athlete who got injured in a motorbike accident in 1976 so he’s been around for a while ;) One of the absolute pioneers when it comes to active chairs! I too have 0 degrees camber on my chair, I had 4 degrees on my first chair but then felt nah, I’d be fine with 0 and just have my chair as snug as possible instead, and to be honest I don’t really notice much difference when it comes to everyday use, I turn on a dime with 0 degrees as well. I do like having a fabric seat, but that’s because I dump it down like crazy to sit deeper and essentially sit like someone with a high injury as that feels better for my hips and pelvic joints along with making me have good balance without actively having to balance. I like the strap to hold legs in place as well as it reminds me to not have my feet too far back on the footrest and it’s great for putting bags against when taking a shopping bag on the footrest lol One accessory I can’t live without though is the Caddy luggage holders! They really don’t add weight but omg they’re gold when traveling or when going to a shop that only has baskets that doesn’t fit on lap or if you don’t want to put a dirty basket on your lap. They’ve saved my ass more than once when I’m out and about! Now in a couple of weeks I’m getting another gold accessory: Smart Drive! That will help me so much on days where the pain and fatigue is just too bad so I’m very weakened, or to just take some strain off. I love the idea of Smart Drive as you can use it as needed and it’s lightweight and portable, and doesn’t require you to change the balance of your chair

My wheelchair back costs about €3,500,- ..... so... I NEVER leave my wheelchair unprotected or alone hahah😅

Thankyou so much for making the videos you do I'm learning so much I'm not in a wheelchair but I use a Walker and I'm learning to cook and adapt in a non adaptived kitchen so it's like I am using a wheelchair when I sit down to cook I have ceberalpalsy I'm 21 and again thankyou so much I've learned to be so much more independent through your channel

I just ordered my new wheelchair, it's gonna be extremely lightweight and the frame is 100% carbon fibre but it's produced in Sweden so I'll have to wait a couple of weeks, I'm so excited!

Yes the Panthera X, the carbon fibre can break easily though, watch out for that!

To be truthful I’m slightly jealous with wheelchair envy because I’m no longer capable of pushing a manual wheelchair at all and it’s heartbreaking at times. Chair choice is very subjective and what might suit one person might be another’s worst nightmare. I have used a powerchair full time for the past 5 years and have discovered my perfect chair is only made for children as far as I know. It’s the Permobil K450. I hope this can be made for adults one day. That aside my new chair is on its way an Invacare TDXsp2. I can’t wait! Edit: Just had a call saying it will be here next Thursday. 🤩 🙌

Fantastic review with so much detail. I’ve only been in a chair since the beginning of October so I’m in a temporary chair for the moment. Your videos have been so educational and inspirational. It means so much to see someone living such an active and independent life while in a chair. When I left the hospital that first night I had no idea how to do anything so I went looking for a video of how to get up stairs to go to bed. I found you that night. This is what I needed. I am new in the wheelchair deal because of not knowing much but last yr I went to a abilities conference and tested out the sport wheel chairs that are so light. I felt a sense of freedom I didn't think I could ever experience again. I am so dependent now on others and this type of wheelchair gives me hope I can be independent. Everything thing you said was spot-on. I find issues with all the chairs that I've had, though. One of the big changes I have made getting my new wheelchair (still waiting after 3 months of ordering it) is the pneumatic tires have to go! Sooo many flats and time spent airing them up. I won't miss that.

Useful info. Many will be helped by your videos. I had a (chopper) wheelchair made from about three wheelchairs. It had no foot rests, a rigid drop on seat, and bicycle wheels. I adjusted the wheel rails (what a person grabs to make the wheels roll) to be a bit further out. I had to use gas nozzle jets to reinforce the bolts and I guess it looked a little steam punk before steam punk was a thing. This let me have a better grip when moving myself. I used leather gloves which were my brakes, although the chair did have brakes. My wheel chair did well on dirt trails and such difficult terrain and on the parts of a college campus not especially set up for handicapped persons.

Great tale, full of right things. I'm a "seasoned" weelchari user and I agree with everything you say. A completely non-foldable weelchari is ok but, only for you perhaps :) I reviewed my footplate in these days and it's perfect what you are explaining. To fit correctly, stable and in the meantime freely your feet it's not simple. Great job !

33 years in a wheelchair here. One of my chairs I used for nearly 15 years! Agree on the titanium and love the material. I prefer a sling bottom and back, but to each their own for sure! Fun watching your video! I could do an HOC next time. I got my newest wheelchair 3 months ago and made one adjustment for center of gravity and that was it. I did that in the first 3 days and it is perfect now. TiLite AeroZ. Wish it were the titanium is the only thing I would change.

Great review. Fifty years with wheelchairs and I've come from the old E&J canvas seat to my current rigid frame Ti-Lite. I'm just guessing here but your cushion looks like the RoHo Hybrid. Because of the way I transfer my chair into my car I prefer the collapsable back but I am also convinced that there is no such thing as a "perfectly flat" surface anywhere. Now to find out if this company ships to Canada, all of this "medical supply" tariff crap is a bigger pain than a deflated RoHo

Chair sounds and looks great. I need a light weight one but getting one is the hard part. sucks to have medical. One chair every 5 years, one more to go. Then its you get what you get. But happy for you, so glad you are doing well.

This is the very best video I've seen on Wheelchairs. I just recently required a wheelchair as a result of being hit by a drunk driver. I've studied extensively the subject on wheelchairs. God there are so many Different ones that its mind-boggling. I wish I had viewed your video first before I bought mine. You brought up so many great points that most people don't think about but are very important. Because this is my first time owning a wheelchair and viewing so many different types of the wheelchair I decided to buy a USED great high-quality wheelchair (TiLite ZRA) first. Best choice I could have made. I will use this for a few months to understand my needs and then buy a custom new one. At this point I must say you are the very best Ambassador for COH. With your personality and tv presence you are a natural for this space. Again, I love what I've learned from your video. Ted

I've solved the problem of wobbly transfers by diy-ing a quick release backrest secured using cut to length MTB wheel skewers. Just pop it off and slide in from the back :)

Looking at wheelchairs again because long distances are hell but short, quick distances are fine, thanks for the info on this company

My Medicaid insurance got me my first custom chair 3 months into my new SCI. It's a quickie. It's gonna be 2 years since I've had it and it's been a good chair. When I get my new chair I'll know a lot more when it comes to picking one exactly for my needs

richard, I love this video and am looking for a new chair. I currently roll a Tilite Aero Z II and I love it! Im 21 years into my disability and chair usage. My first custom chair was in 2016 which Ive rolled all over Lincoln and Omaha Nebraska. Im definitely checking out hands on concepts for my new chair. Thank you for the great review. I got my first wheelchair at the start of December. With the help of your videos I knew roughly what I was getting. I chose folding because i need that to fit in friends cars (they have tiny cars or atleast not big enough to fit an unfolding one even if it came apart). I do find what you say about the cloth being a big saggy. Honestly I still don't know how to even sit in my chair properly, every day is different some days it's comfy others my bums falling out the back etc. It's bright green and yeah I see the damage is going to make it look weird but I think that the silver will work with the green when it gets damaged. I'm thinking a solid back would have been nice but can't fold and have solid. I think we're going to have to ask to be moved to an accessible house at which point maybe I would almost definitely get a solid back even if it was just for me going places and use the folding for traveling. I don't want a manual chair when i go out with friends cause f that I wanna be independent. It was hard enough getting the service to allow me to have the self propelled and not plank me in an electric chair. - we agreed I'd get help to fund electric wheels or pusher devices. Anyways yeah? I agree I haven't a clue what I want fully yet but when Indo I'd likely be saving for a few years to get something that works better for me.

Ellie Smithy many solid backs are easily and quickly removable with something like mounting blocks permanently on the canes (the tubes up the back with push handles) and the back itself clicks into those. They come off solid chairs to make them even smaller for transport but I'd think they could also come off of a folding chair to allow it to fold. If the back of your chair isn't working for you it might be worth talking to someone about that option. I have a Jay back that totally looks like it could be mounted on and quick released iff of my beat up folding chair (its currently on my new rigid chair which it was ordered with).

@@beeb6730 this chair I'm not sure of a rigid back is available it's a version of the quickie Life foldable. I wasn't given an option at the time other than rigid fill chair or folding. My back is adjustable height and it does have thick thick padding but I think they oversized the chair on a whole (and I'm around 100kg ish up and down a few so I'm in a chair that takes up to 115 I think). So there's a bit more for me to sink in. (Assume the expectation I'll gain weight, makes little sense as I'm getting more exercise now than I have in a long time.) Tbf I've not had it adjusted at all since I got it cause I don't know what where when how. It's full adjustable as far as I'm aware. But the floppiness won't change a don't think. Well I tell a lie, we adjusted the height of the anti tips for when I'm out alone to more than the 10° they were set at. (Pitiful when you live in a hilly city with "drop" kerbs). I'm hoping I'll either adjust or I'll get annoyed enough I'll ask for an engineer to come out and adjust it or something. I need to get a new cushion which might also help to be honest. This was the basic one they had and I don't think it's thick enough or supportive enough. (Mind you I only use it a few hours at a time , sometimes bearly in a week - for outdoors). Sorry I'm blabbering

Hey Ellie My daughter uses Yamaha Power Assist Wheels. They are brilliant. She went from me/her dad/her brother pushing her everywhere to being completely self sufficient. She's only 11 so (unlike Richard!) she's not strong or fast enough to push herself around all day and these wheels mean she has all the speed she needs to keep up with her friends whilst still keeping active. She can get up hills and ramps and with her Freewheel attachment she can get onto the school oval at lunch and recess to play - all without help. If you don't want to go full electric, I reckon Power Assist is the way to go. They weren't cheap - maybe $7000AUD?? But she'll be able to keep the wheels and upgrade her chair as required.

@@cgardiner2704 hey glad your daughter is self sufficient with the power assist. I've applied for funding for e-motion wheels. Sadly the freewheel won't fit onto my chair due to it being folding and my legs kicking out I think. Can't remember what she said. But I have the smart drive and e-motion wheels that will fit. They are bother around the £6,000 mark so in getting help to afford it.

D-Locke breaks can be good also for if you are say wanting to stop your chair but you are not on totally flat ground. I don’t think if I was in a can air I’d want a chair that didn’t have any breaks just encase I needed them for that odd occasion. If you do want colour push rims to prevent all those scrapes you can get rubber grip covers from the company grippoz.they make the chair more colourful and also give you extra grip.

A little tip on setting up your chair from a 32 year para, I always move my push rims in on the second tabs it narrows your chair a little more and could be the difference getting in tight spaces.

I have a wheelchair but I never use it because it’s too damn heavy. I need a new one but I think they won’t cover the cost.

JahJJMac I have “The Surge” push rims on my current chair. They are all metal with a little rubber strip on the outer edge. They work great for me.

I'm interested in what you have to say about the seat base. I was advised to get a chair with "tension adjustable seat straps" or something like that, when I was looking at chairs, all the custom chairs seems to have that, not just a single piece of fabric. Even with a good cushion I really appreciate the adjustability, once I got it right, I've not had to switch it, but right wasn't perfectly flat, but then maybe that's my ladylike figure, I needed the rear straps to be looser than the front ones. A rigid seat base is not an upgrade I'll be considering! The other thing I find interesting is clothing guards, they make sense, but one of mine got broken on an flight when I'd had the wheelchair about a week, I never got around to replacing it and eventually took the other one off. I don't miss them. It probably means my chair is slightly too wide, but I don't find I'm damaging or dirtying clothing because of it, other than one cardigan, which was just a poor choice of style for a wheelchair user anyway.

I've had holes in my pants many times from the clothing rubbing against the wheels. Clothing guards are a must for me.

I've got rubber grip rails on my wheels it's great for stopping n grip

D's locks: now i have those.. and i like them ALOT!!! I used to use the old style locks on my wheelchair and man did that drive me crazy when the tire pressure would go down and i had no brakes at all. And yeah mine has a little play in them too.. but the biggest problem i have with mine is on the lock rings that are screwed on the wheel itself keep coming lose every once in a while. And i don't know how much toque it can handle so i tighten them up as hard as i can by hand... so i won't damage the lock rings. Other then that... i like them!!! :-) I even installed them on my chair myself too.. When i bought my D's locks it cost $500.00 But it was WELL worth the price!!!

Ive been in a chair for going on 12 years and I’ve been using big 1 1/2x4 inch caster wheels for the past 4+ years and I haven’t felt the caster wobble I have felt it with the smaller casters but not with the larger ones

Lots to think about here and in the previous video. Got fitted for a new ankle brace today. New crutches next month. As for a custom wheelchair...dunno. I'm probably going to have to get a car first. I've got two serviceable wheelchairs at the moment.

The knurling bars get all loose, I'm looking around for the noise, but its got 48 spokes each. I just got the wheelie bars because its alot smaller, its like they said in the hospital, eventually, you won't even care. Its kinda true because the leg wrap makes you tougher, but not stronger. They aught to add all the muscles in your foot to your calve.

The point about the 2 sided fork only applies if your caster housing are widely set. If you are shorter, your footplate is high enough that you don’t have to have casters set wide enough to not hit your feet. So for me, My casters are set a bit narrower than my drive wheels so there’s no particular benefit to 1 vs 2 sided caster forks. Good vid, kind of seems like spon con tho ;)

Awesome video thank you so much for sharing. I have been in a wheelchair for 11 years now due to the horrible trucking accident. I lost both legs and prosthetics aren't an option because of sensitive skin issues, big bummer. I have gained so much weight and that sucks. I wonder if they make chairs for heavy people

I love the paint missing off my black push rims. It's like a patina on leather. I love freaking people out in public when I've got a sharp spot and I get my leatherman out and file it down then keep rolling. Also, I hate the cloth bottom, but when I take that off and weave a paracord seat. Takes forever, but it is firm, but still gives a little.

Have you considered discussing the option of colostomy for bowel management? It has been life changing for some!

sadly, currently stuck with a standard hospital/Medline wheelchair, as custom ones are expensive!! hoping to possibly get a custom one for myself in the future, and ill probably go with a similar one to this

Omg dude i feel ya on the bad weld thing.....did it for a few years and now i look and see shit welds when im out and about and it just frightens me on some of the shit i see lol

I run 2deg of camber to help me push as I have poor grip. Ps carbon fibre is plastic. A calf strap is essential for me. My chair goes everywhere and is scratched quite badly but I won't change my chair until my prescription changes. My current chair is 7 years old.

I was waiting for you to say that there is no perfect wheelchair, and it’s true, it has to fit you, everyone has their own kind of perfect. I recently got a new one, and I couldn’t be happier, every time I go down a curb I barely feel it, which is good for my back. And it looks amazing! Here in Sweden we get the wheelchair for free unless it is a sports wheelchair.

Lino Lium Yes I do! Honestly I don’t like them, but if you have spina bifida they’re good since the footplate is really narrow, and unless the fit is absoulutely perfect from the start there’s barely any customisation options

@@XGamer-lk2xo I don't have Spina Bifida but the foot plate on my current wheelchair is very narrow as well and I like it. I'm an experienced wheelchair user, my last three chairs have had customisation options but I think I'm ready for a non customisable one. :)
