There's several rankings, Sea of tranquility did a ranking last year

Luminiferious is, I think, front to back their most impressive record. But Blessed Black Wings got me into them when I was a dopey teen, and they were the first metal band I got into that sounded as rough around the edges as they do. I know it's sluggish in places but it's so sloppy and chunky and evocative. I love it

High on Fire is basically like a sludge/stoner/doom metal version of Motorhead. Matt Pike is musical genius in both this band and Sleep. I can't wait for Cometh the Storm once it drops next week but here would be my ranking of their albums and High on Fire is consistently great: The Art of Self Defense: 3.75/5 Surrounded by Thieves: 4.25/5 Blessed Black Wings: 4/5 Death Is This Communion: 4.75/5 Snakes for the Divine: 5/5 De Vermis Mysteriis: 4.75/5 Luminiferous: 4.5/5 Electric Messiah: 4/5

Great to hear To Cross the Bridge getting some love. I lose myself in that tune every time I listen, it’s so dark and immersive.

First three albums are the best. HOF are at their best when they combine the sludge of sleep with the riffage of Celtic Frost. Eyes and Teeth, Madness of an Architect, Anointing of Seer, Bloody Knuckles, Steel Shoe, To Cross the Bridge - those are some of my favorites. For some reason, their thrashy frenetic stuff like Snakes just doesn't do a lot for me. Those Celtic Frost grooves are just savage - they do that style way more justice than any Scandinavian black metal band ever did.

Death Is This Communion’s light approach to production is something I go to more frequently but I can’t deny that Luminiferous fucks HARD. Also appreciate Jeff Matz for the push to more Turkish melodies and sonic textures as those have given more flavour to the usual pummelling. The other half of Sleep, OM has a similar thing going on with their last couple of albums albeit in a more meditative way and less freakin’ releases.

De Vermis Mysteriis is my favourite album, the stand-out track is Bloody Knuckles it has one of their most vicious and memorable riffs.

Thraft of Canaan is my favorite song, Surrounded by Thieves my favorite album. Gotta love how everyone here has a different taste among a great band. Also Matt Pike's favorite record, Snakes for the Divine his favorite song, which I didn't know until recently.

Been a fan since Communion.. I was once in front row at a HOF show, it was the absolute loudest show I've ever seen, out of maybe 500 shows I've been to

I got into them starting with Snakes. Probably the best starting two song punch in the whole lot. Since then the albums improved. I’ve recently got into their older stuff which is a grittier ride. The first album with the two b-sides improves on that one. Southern Lord included them in the reissue in 2012.

Dood, dig ya channel and agree with much of what comes out that gob... but, '10,000 years' from their debut is one of their heaviest and best riffs.. But hey, that's me.

Very consistent band overall. My personal favorite is Death Is This Communion, but I also like their early work a fair amount as well. Sure, it’s more simple, but I like the raw energy and aggression. Need to catch them live at some point. The Art of Self-Defense: 7/10 Surrounded by Thieves: 7.5/10 Blessed Black Wings: 8.5/10 Death Is This Communion: 9.5/10 Snakes For The Divine: 7.5/10 De Vermis Mysteriis: 9/10 Luminiferous: 8/10 Electric Messiah: 8/10

Had always heard of this band but never got into stoner or sludge metal. Holy shit…I missed out!! Snakes from the Divine blew my goddamn mind

Thanks for doing this! Luminiferous is also my favorite. It's just SO good. Death Is This Communion is a very close second. I love this band. I don't think they've put out a bad album. The Art Of Self Defense is a little dull, but even that one has some good moments.

Great distinction on Death is this Communion. That record always sounded different than all the other records to me. And in a good way-it's always been my favorite HOF record. But I am pretty optimistic about this new one based on the single.

I went through all of their albums myself a couple weeks ago and I think their discography is pretty solid overall. Nothing bad, but also nothing absolutely amazing either. Still looking forward to checking out the new album though

Death is this communion is easily my favorite but also the one that introduced me to them. But every record after that is a banger too. Great list.

Noice. I love High on Fire, they yet to drop an album I was disappointed by, and I am hyped for new one. We can agree on best albums and on worst one too (even if I liked it a bit more than you did)

De Vermis Mysteriis is one of my favorite metal albums, hits you like a ton of bricks

My introduction to High on Fire was the DE VERMIS MYSTERIIS LP. Still, my favorite album is has to be SNAKES FOR THE DIVINE. I fucking love “Fire Flood & Plague.” In fact, I’m going to play it again right now!

So overall no bad albums!

All albums are solid and I worship at the alter of High On Fire.... Snakes For the Devine and Death is This Communion are when I got on board with this band and those albums are my usual go to

Yeah that's how I feel about their debut album actually.

I can say even though I love Sludge/Doom Metal I’ve never fully listened to a High on Fire album. Probably should since I really enjoy Matt’s other band Sleep. Not to mention also being a fan of stuff like Electric Wizard, Elder, Early Mastodon, Kyuss, Early Baroness, Uncle Acid. Which album you recommend I start with?

Honestly you can't go wrong with anything from "Blessed Black Wings" and beyond, but I'd specifically recommend "Luminiferous" since its my favourite.

I'd recommend Snakes for the Divine first, then Death Is This Communion, followed by De Vermis Mysteriis and Luminiferous after that. All their albums are great. They're like a sludge/doom version of Motorhead.

Killer band, not a bad album in the bunch.

High On Fire rocks! Perfect for both rocking out or staring at the wall tripping out to. That being said, Mike Pike's original band Sleep is even better at both! Had one of my best trips listening to Sleep.... Everything flowed into me and I became the Univverse!

@@mikepenny8940 Cool. Yeah I'm a huge fan. You can't really go wrong. Surrounded by Thieves was my favorite for a long time, but I've come to appreciate the variety and heaviness of Blessed. Snakes is a great album, probably my second favorite.

So much respect for thier unrelenting sound and style. My introduction was Blessed black wings and I was like Holy Shit !!!. Finally someone mixed Motorhead with Slayer😮

Very different from my opinion. Just like most bands.... I find bands peaking in the 3rd-5th album, but High On Fire are very consistently good. My Ratings: The Art of Self Defense: 4.5/5 (Hell Mastodon basically formed because of this record right? I find this to be a landmark debut release) Surrounded by Thieves: 3.5/5 Blessed Black Wings: 5/5 (Their Best IMO) Death Is This Communion: 4.5/5 Snakes for the Divine: 4/5 (Snakes is their best song) De Vermis Mysteriis: 3.5/5 Luminiferous: 3.5/5 (best of the post Snakes releases) Electric Messiah: 3.5/5 I guess I feel Electric Messiah is their worst album, but I mean.... it's still really good.

My only problem with snakes for the divine is the production is very weak & muddy. Doesn’t sound as heavy even tho we all know damn well they’re playing heavy as hell

Man, Luminiferous is the worst HoF album in my opinion
